The Orford Express has just left Sherbrooke Station after allowing passengers to detrain and visit the market in the ex-CP station. It is westbound and headed for Orford's Express new base in Magog (previously it was based out of Sherbrooke).
A snatched view of MBTA Commuter Rail FP-10 class diesel #1111 before I board for my first ride on an American train. Salem MA was my destination. The train operated in push-pull mode, the coaching stock comprising depowered Budd RDC units that MBTA had inherited when taking over the Boston area commuter lines.

CN 1501 crosses over from main 1 to 2 at Washington street in Joliet. This Budd RDC has been outfitted with specialized equipment for track evaluation and has been running the former EJ&E the past couple days.
In between two GMD products (VIA 6309 and recently donated CN 7300) we see the 'John Molson' steam engine backing up in the far distance.
The Budd Rail Diesel Car (RDC) is, to my eyes, one of the icons of North American rail transport - a status, perhaps far in excess of its historical significance, undoubtedly influenced by the Triang Railways model of the 1960s (see accompanying image).
Budd built just under 400 of these self-propelled railcars between 1949 and 1962. Ideally suited to low-density rural and short-haul commuter services, they were less expensive to operate than a traditional locomotive-hauled train. They could be used singly, or in multiple with several cars controlled from the front unit. RDC trains were an early example of self-contained diesel multiple unit trains. I am grateful to Flickr user oshkosh619 for the base image of preserved Boston & Main Railroad 6211. I have chosen to finish this version in the paint scheme of the Alaska Railroad, which is physically separate from the rest of the North American network. Wikipedia informs me that the Alaska Railroad retired its RDCs in 2009 (25-Nov-14).

10/13/1973 - B&M branch line fan trip. This is a photo stop on the Watertown Branch in Cambridge, MA not far from the long gone Fresh Pond Depot. The trip also covered the Lexington and Central Massachusetts branches. It is amazing that the picture came out at all, I was having trouble with my view finder all during this trip. Budd RDC's were a rare sight on the freight only Watertown Branch.

As part of the 2011 railfans weekend at Conway Scenic, CSRX 23 (RDC-1) was run from North Conway to the very end of the line at Conway.
A trio of RDC's (VIA 6251, VIA 6208 & VIA 6105) are at the rear end of VIA 37 as it crosses the Lachine canal 5 minutes after leaving Central Station in Montreal.

Tri-ang Railways' HO-scale R352 Budd Rail Diesel Car (RDC) first appeared in the early 1960s with generic 'Trancontinental' branding. Later versions carried 'Canadian National' and 'TransAustralia' branding for the Canadian and Australian markets respectively. With its unpowered trailer car R232, it was a resounding success and remains much sought-after by model collectors. I am grateful to Flickr user oshkosh619 for the base image of preserved Boston & Main Railroad 6211, which I have digitally-modified to represent a real-life version of the Tri-ang model (25-Nov-14).

Scanned from a GAF slide dated March 1974 - A single inbound Budd RDC passes the closed station at Belmont, Massachusetts. Belmont is located on the Fitchburg Division Main Line of the Boston and Maine RR.
I do not have a record of either the date or the location of this photo of a VIA Rail Canada RDC. My guess would be rural Ontario in the 80's.
Consist was VIA 903 (P42DC), 4 LRC cars, VIA 6435 (F40PH-2), 2 stainless steel cars and 2 Budd RDC's (VIA 6130 & VIA 6202). I was told by local railfans this train was on its way to Ottawa.

Languishing in a storage siding on the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum is a Budd RDC in faded MBTA colours. Only the '3' remains of its running number 6134. It has seen better days.

The crew have a conversation alongside two Reading & Blue Mountain Budd RDCs on a Pottsville-Jim Thorpe run during its call at Schuylkill Haven. 29 October 2022.
CSRX 23, the RDC at the left is on the move. It will move behind the valley train whose markers are at left, with CN 7470 at the other end. When it leaves for Bartlett, the RDC will advance to the station to board passengers for an extra to Conway.
A Budd RDC car is the latest railroad motive power on display in History Park in Gaithersburg, MD. From Wikipedia, “The Budd Rail Diesel Car, RDC or Buddliner is a self-propelled diesel multiple unit railcar. In the period 1949–62, 398 RDCs were built by the Budd Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The cars were primarily adopted for passenger service in rural areas with low traffic density or in short-haul commuter service, and were less expensive to operate in this context than a traditional locomotive-drawn train. The cars could be used singly or several coupled together in train sets and controlled from the cab of the front unit. The RDC was one of the few DMU trains to achieve commercial success in North America.”
Engineer Brian Brown and his daughter Heather were the crew when we rode in an RDC on the Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad. She collected tickets while Dad ran the train.
Another photo where I should have recorded the date. This is my one and only ride on CP subsidiary Dominion Atlantic Railway. The station is Kentville, NS. I think most of the DAR is now abandoned. This building which was both the passenger station and DAR main offices has been demolished.
