CN's track inspection RDC #1501 rolls north past the venerable old signal guarding the south end of the former Detroit, Toledo & Ironton's crossing of the former Pere Marquette in Carleton. This signal, which was old in its own right, replaced an even older signal that was on a remnant of a concrete arch, leftover from DT&I's short-lived experiment with electrification. During this era (early 2010s), CN was still running a pair of trains between Flatrock and Toledo via this line and the Ann Arbor RR at Dianne. Presently, CN runs no trains south of Flatrock on the DT&I, with only Indiana & Ohio's thrice-weekly interchange train from Lima polishing the rails.

Two of the companies Rail Diesel Cars (RDC for short) heading timetable south through Nesquehoning before a pop up shower rains down. Among the unique things about the Reading & Northern, this has got to be most unique of them all. The R&N is the only place in the country where you can ride regularly-scheduled (most weekends throughout the year) trips powered by the companies 3 operable Budd built products.

For a while on the Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad, the seasonal tourist train on the coast ran with a Budd RDC. On a fine August morning, the Budd car arrives at Wheeler, Oregon.

As part of the 2011 railfans weekend at Conway Scenic, CSRX 23 (RDC-1) was run from North Conway to the very end of the line at Conway. Here we see a runby slightly north of Conway, I forget the name of this location.

Four Metro North Commuter RDC's (aka Rail Diesel Cars) are Laid Up in Port Jervis Yard awaiting their scheduled departure. These are self propelled Passenger Cars with a Diesel Engines manufactured by the Budd Company.

According to "R36 Coach" the RDC's ran between Port Jervis and Suffern, New York.

This "West of Hudson Line" operates under the Authority of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (aka: MTA). Service is provided by both Metro North and New Jersey Transit (under subcontract by the MTA) using Metropolitan Transit Authority Owned Equipment.

This Yard is located not far from the Former Erie Railroad Port Jervis Station, however this commuter train uses it's own Metro North/New Jersey Transit Station nearby. The Former Erie Railroad Station is no longer used for Commuter Trains, but serves as a Commercial Center in Downtown Port Jervis. Many Railroads have used this Yard over the years.

CN 1501 is heading towards Cape while testing the Montreal sub as it approaches a Clear to Stop signal. Up above is construction for the REM light rail project. Below it are catenary supports that have been out of use for many decades.

Normally, A707, or the Ole Holloway Express as I call it since Jason Holloway is the usual engineer, isn't much for excitement. April 11th was an exception though as TVRM's RDC cars 20 & 22,former B&O & later MARC RDC-1's, & the 6134 (affectionately known as the Can of Purple), a former Boston & Maine & later SEPTA RDC-1, were finally on the way to their new home at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

The cars were being sent to Cumberland Maryland as part of the trade that would give us the 540, a former N&W Powhatan Arrow Pullman coach, the 100, a Budd car originally built as a sleeper for the N&W’s “Cavalier” before being rebuilt into a commuter coach by MARC, and the 726, an ACF (American Car & Foundry) combine car originally built for the Central of Georgia Railway’s “Nancy Hanks 2” as the 390. It was renumbered to 726 by the Southern and named the “Man O’ War.” This car gained notoriety in the preservation world due to its years of being used as the recording car on the Southern and later Norfolk Southern steam excursions.

On a side note, thanks are in order for CSX for donating the move of both the RDC’s & TVRM’s new coaches. 4-11-19

VIA Rail Canada pulled a few classics out of long term storage this week for groups of school kids. They were loaded at the Windsor Station and taken down to WFCU Arena and taught about railroad safety.

A little about the consist: VIA 6251, an RDC-4 (ex-CN #9251) leads RDC-2 #6208, and 6105 (ex-CN D105).

Perdu au fin fond des bois, l'autorail diesel 9161 a toujours sa codification du MBTA. Bien sûr, il n'a pas roulé depuis de longues années.

Lost deep in the woods, RDC1 9161 still has its MBTA reporting marks. Of course, it hasn't been driven for many years.

The Lewis & Clark Explorer heads west on Portland & Western's Astoria District. This train was operated between Linnton (an industrial area in NW Portland) and Astoria on weekends during the summers of 2003 - 2005.

The service used three ex-BC Rail RDCs. One had some historical significance. The RDC-3 leading the train was Great Northern's sole RDC. Originally, it was purchased to work GN's line into Butte, Montana.

Preserved at Exporail.

Three geeps (CSRX 252, 216 & 573) and an RDC can be seen.

BC Rail's "Cariboo Dayliner" with BC-30 leading 3 other Budd RDCs preparing to depart Lillooet in British Columbia, May 23, 1988.

I rode the train up the Fraser River Canyon from North Vancouver to Lillooet and return. Despite the dreadful weather, it was a most auspicious day, as on this trip were Railfan & Railroad's Mike Del Vecchio and the late Jim Boyd.
