Built in 1991, sitting majestically on a hilltop in Ladakh at height of 14000 ft, is a Buddhist white domed stupa called the Shanti Stupa. It was built to promote world peace and prosperity and to commemorate 2500 years of Buddhism. It is considered a symbol of the ties between the people of Japan and Ladakh. The Shanti Stupa holds the relics of the Buddha at its base.

A classic destination in Myanmar is Inle Lake. Most everyone heads for the Nyaungshwe and takes a tour from there. Unfortunately, since our first visit in 1998, the place has been overrun with a gazillion tourists. Try the alternative. There is actually a system of three lakes connected by a river. We hired a boat in Pekon, north of Loikaw, ( itself a fabulous place), and spent two days traveling north to the circus at Inle Lake. It was tremendously pleasant with hardly any other foreigners. We stayed at the Paya Taung monastery the first night; a lovely, authentic experience. Pictured is a young student monk from the temple.

I went to a mediation workshop this Saturday for 4 hours. By the time I was finished I think I am left with more questions than answers. Then again this can be good cuz knowing how to ask the right questions is the beginning of wisdom.

The Potala Palace (Tibetan: པོ་ཏ་ལ) in Lhasa, Tibet, was the chief residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India during in 1959. It is now a museum and World Heritage Site.

The palace is named after Mount Potalaka, the mythical abode of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. The 5th Dalai Lama started its construction in 1645 after one of his spiritual advisers, Konchog Chophel (died 1646), pointed out that the site was ideal as a seat of government, situated as it is between Drepung and Sera monasteries and the old city of Lhasa. It may overlay the remains of an earlier fortress called the White or Red Palace,on the site built by Songtsän Gampo in 637.

Books and Buddhism

On a sunny Sunday, I had coffee with an old friend. We share a birthday, but a few years apart.

It’s been at least seven years since I last saw my Buddhism Buddy. It was time to return his book. I brought a few others of unknown origin, but they weren’t his. (In fact, they were mine, but I forgot that I had bought them.)
