On the homepage of Myspace.com, there's an advert to draw your attention to the 'Browse' feature of the site. It's pretty funny, the animation shows a cartoon girl, then guy, then when 'both' is selected, it shows a drag king! Awesome!

I just watched an enormous ball of Poop consume Sweden. I’ve also seen the Earth be swallowed by Pubes, Steam absorb EA, and France split in two and flee from Mars before being eaten by Your Mom’s Ass (which was, quite frankly, enormous). Sights like these are common in Agar.io, a multiplayer browser game where player-controlled circles gobble dots, increase mass, and feast on each other. Agario is pretty simply to grasp.

Gui, server?

So this leads me to the next decision, do you use a server with the GUI setup (in my view bad) or the SERVER setup (good, but time consuming & PIA, carpel tunnel.)?

My main gripe using the GUI setup is the sheer number of holes you expose a server to. GNOME, Gnome applications, GNOME libs. The biggest peeve is ubuntu does not allow a default install of minimal apps & instead installs heaps of things you really dont need.

Burn your own

While you can get a GUI version shipped to you, you have to burn your own server copy. Downloading the 400Mb+ is a pain. Don't use a browser. Use ftp.

FTP all the way

Using ftp to download has several advantages. You can use a more reliable bit of software (ftp vs firefox, now theres a thread you can arc up about). Heres why.

If firefox times out becuase your browsing flickr and max out the new connections, your download can be killed. But with ftp you can do the following ...

$ ftp mirror.aarnet.edu.au/

Name (mirror.aarnet.edu.au:fb): anonymous

...

Password: anonymous

...

ftp>cd pub/ubuntu/releases/6.06

ftp>reget ubuntu-server-6.06-i386.iso ubuntu-server-6.06-i386.iso

Now what did I just do? If you old upload has failed at say 399Mb and you still have more to go, you have just told ftp to resume download from ftp server at the last position your download failed.

You acheive this using the reget command instead of using the get command. It also assumes you have the original file. This saves heaps of time.

Try that with your browser.

<<< start

Man, why can't I get a "oh yah, you recently connected to server x so I'll just add it to this list so you can connect more quickly.." up in here without having to dial in the address for the computer?

Update: I am closer, but confused a little. I just dialed in the address of Garbo and it came up no sweat. I was also able to click the plus after the address bar to add it to the list in the Favourite Servers list. When I use the Browse button, it does all the same things except for the add to fave servers bit. There should be some kinda drag and drop a server you're connected to into the fave servers area box. Everything else is drag and drop. Why isn't this?
