This photo was taken in the studio during class on Tuesday. The model is my friend and classmate, Bryan Smith. For lighting I used all three studio lights, though I had the back right one (Bryan's left) turned down very low in order to preserve the shadows cast on the left side of his face while maintaining the nice rim lighting it provided. As for editing, I adjusted the levels, curves, brightness, and contrast in Photoshop 6.0, then converted it to black and white in Paint.NET.
What does the use of dominant value change about a portrait and the concept behind the image? Dominant value, much like texture, adds more depth to the photo and conveys certain emotions based on the combination of the subject's expression and the high or low key editing. For example, a portrait of someone laughing could benefit from high key editing, as the overall brightness of the photo would make it feel more lighthearted and bubbly.
