Sunset at the end of the Broken HIll trail at Torrey Pines State Park near San Diego.
This is about a two mile hike up from the parking lot at the Park entrance. Only a few people stopped by while I was there on Christmas Eve. Most either are not aware of it or choose to hike the trails closer to the entrance, which helps to keep Broken Hill relatively unspoiled.
The trees here were my Christmas tree this past year and the sunset a nice gift. I only had one chance to photograph it and was nice to have some clouds and color in the sky.

The Line of Lode Lookout and Miner's Memorial is a dramatic, iconic structure on the edge of the mullock heap that dissects Broken Hill. The memorial to the 800+ miners who lost their lives working on the Broken Hill mines. The building itself is a metaphor for the underground lives of the miners, evoking the damp, claustrophobic underground environment

The Broken Hill Sculpture Symposium work commenced on 1st of April 1993 and ended in the first week of May. From then, a lonely hill named Sundown, the haunt of wedge-tailed eagles, was transformed into an iconic artwork for this mysterious Outback town. The 53 tonnes of stones, cut from sandstone boulders from the Wilcannia region, were transported up to the Sundown, with the help of the whole community, from local contractors to the city council.
The Sculptures comprise of 12 sandstone artworks which highlight the skyline, all with a story to tell. Located on a majestic hilltop within the centre of the reserve, the sculptures were completed in 1993 by artists from around the world.
Up the hill beyond Sturt Park is an amazing castle style stone cottage. It was built around 1890 with castellations. It was the Towers Hospital of Nurse Robertson from 1890 to 1909. The historic government hospital was built in 1889 in another location.
This sandstone sculpture, Bajo El Sol Jaguar by Antonio Nava Tirado, is one of twelve on a rocky outcrop just outside the mining town of Broken Hill. All of the sculptures were created by artists attending a sculpture symposium in 1983. These sculptures are now a popular destination at sunset, not just for the sculptures but also the immensity of the surrounding desert.

Spotted from quite a distance away, responded well to call, however, didn't come quite close enough for a really good shot.

The Junction Mine was first pegged in 1884. The Broken Hill Junction Silver Mining Company was formed in 1886, and sunk the Browne (possibly originally the Penglass shaft), King and MacIntyre shafts. The mine closed initially in 1901, but re-opened in 1906 using the Browne shaft and struggled along until 1923.
The mine was acquired by the North Mine C.1931. It was mined again from 1946 to 1962 when it was sold to Broken Hill South Ltd. Operations continued through to 1972 after which time the mine closed.

Rains drifting south just around sunset momentarily reveal the sun as it sets over the ocean and tints the eroded formations at Broken Hill in warm light. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, San Diego, California; March 2024.
Mad Max 2, released in 1981 to critical acclaim was filmed in and around Broken Hill, an isolated mining town founded in 1883 deep in the Australian outback. The road to Mundi Mundi Plains was used for the opening chase scene. Better than the original and way better than fury road.
