Argent Street, Broken Hill NSW

Tanks at the Junction Mine. Broken Hill, New South Wales.

The moon was rapidly sinking while morning light spread warm tones across the Broken Hills in Grasslands National Park. The scene would have been more striking the day before - this juxtaposition would have happened earlier, against a darker sky - but that day dawned cloudy and bleak. You have to take what's given.

This building kind of describes journalism and news papers in regional towns. The leaf less trees, the unmowed grass sums it up.

Sulphide Street, Broken Hill

Arrived at the Broken Hill when the sun was setting. Supposed to see the clouds stained into beautiful colors. Actually, it didn't happen. Maybe the clouds were too thick. But I was happy about the moon hanging over the sky. Although the moon was a bit too high, the clouds connected the moon and the horizon, making it balanced.

The original hotel on this site was timber and iron, opened on in 1888. William Carter was then licensee. It was rebuilt in stone in 1890 by W H Newton.

The Barrier Miner reports favourably on the Pig & Whistle and a later licensee, J.M. Manus, on the 22nd of December 1909:

"At the Pig and Whistle Hotel, corner of Bromide and Cobalt streets, visitors can rely on securing good accommodation and civility.

Mr. J.M. Manus is the proprietor, and by stocking the best of spirits, and the coolest of beers, together with strict attention to the comfort of his customers, he has become very popular amongst a numerous clientele."

The Pig & Whistle Hotel closed in 2003.

The Living Desert Sculpture Park, set on a hill a short distance from Broken Hill, represents the artistic spirit, beauty, and paradox of this remote, arid, iconic, and beautiful outback Australian mining town. This was taken during a 3 month work trip to Broken Hill in 1999. The 35mm colour negative was scanned and digitally cleaned. It remains quite dusty...!

No fireworks needed here, the colors at sunset are unreal and even when the sun has has set the sky continues to glow!

I bribed the magpie with some beer!!

So hot, hot hot here!!

Drop another dime in the juke box babe.

It actually does take dimes, nickels and quarters as this juke box is imported from the US.

It is loaded with 45 rpm vinyl records and is good to go.

The Palace Hotel in Broken Hill is itself a living work of art. Murals adorn most walls, painted over many years.

Yesterday's late burn in Broken Hill, Torrey Pines State Reserve. It almost ended as 'broken hearts at broken hill', until the last moment when the gloom gave way to a smokey show of gorgeous reds and pinks.

One of the disused mines in Broken Hill Australia

Broken Hill is located east of the Simpson Desert in Australia. Silver, lead and zinc were discovered here in vast reserves in the 19th Century and it has been a huge mining centre ever since. The entire city is dominated by mining, mining history, and the legacy of wealth resulting in fine monumental stone buildings in an unlikely desert setting.

Living Desert Sculpture Sanctuary near Broken Hill, NSW

One of Broken Hill's most celebrated horticultural attractions sits in an abandoned parking lot outside a nondescript supermarket in South Broken Hill. The rare white jacaranda, Jacaranda mimosifolia alba, was introduced into Australia in 1960 by George Hewitt, a doctor from Bellingen, New South Wales, who imported them from a collector in Florida but is native to south-central South America. Bellingen Hospital’s original white jacaranda still flowers in the grounds and has parented many offspring.
