Soldiers of the Pathfinders and Groupement des Commandos Parachutiste (GCP), the advance forces of 16 Air Assault Brigade and 11e Brigade Parachutiste, about to practise fast roping from a French Army Puma helicopter during Exercise Falcon Amarante.

British and French paratroopers are showing their readiness to deploy together on joint operations.

Across two demanding weeks in November, south west France saw Exercise Falcon Amarante testing the Airborne Combined Joint Expeditionary Force (A-CJEF) – a partnership between 16 Air Assault Brigade and 11e Brigade Parachutiste.

The two brigades provide the airborne rapid reaction forces for their respective armies, and the A-CJEF has been trained and ready since 2013 to deploy on short-notice operations ranging from war fighting to disaster relief.

Exercise Falcon Amarante is the A-CJEF’s annual test exercise, taking place in 2018 under 11e BP’s command. Some 650 British troops and 170 vehicles of the 3 PARA Battlegroup - built around the airborne infantry of 3rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment bolstered by artillery, engineers, medics, signallers and logisticians took part.

British troops were paired with the 3e Regiment de Parachutistes d’Infanterie de Marine as the A-CJEF, with US paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade working alongside it.

After mission planning and reconnaissance, the exercises started in earnest with some 600 British, French and US paratroopers jumping onto the Caylus training area near Toulouse. From there, a series of simulated missions tested the skills and capabilities of the 2,000-strong force.

Lightweight, highly mobile, and nearly silent, the Juke is the ideal powersuit for when stealth is required. By the time you can hear the telltale hiss of a Juke's 8MW irradiator, it is likely too late.

The Sleepwalker is a light mech typically fielded by Spacer forces. This particular Sleepwalker has seen some combat, causing its distinctive orange paint to chip off in the front and sides. Despite its size, it can easily sneak up on targets due to its nearly silent footfall and use of optical camouflage. Sleepwalkers come equipped with advanced sensors and optics that make it ideal for spotting enemies from a distance. Even if you manage to see a Sleepwalker due to its height, there's a good chance it has already seen you.

Daily Dog Challenge 2317. "Watch Your Focus"

In many ways a reprisal of yesterday's shoot, taken with a single flash and only a couple inches separating Henry and his beloved Cookies.

Aside: Henry sure has big paws! I don't usually shoot from this angle. Now I know why.

This was my favorite shot, being less static and having more depth, but I just couldn't get past that big furry paw to choose it.

D-Day is celebrating its anniversary today, 75 years after the 1944 landing in Normandy. The official name for the event was Operation Neptune and was the largest scale seaborne invasion in history. The effort from more than 200,000 heroic allied soldiers on June 6, 1944, unclasped Adolf Hitler’s hand from Europe. In celebration of their brave efforts today, the Imperial War Museum will release a fleet of aircraft which will take a route over England and towards the English Channel with a final descent on France.

Approximately 280 paratroopers, made up of 130 UK troops from 16 Air Assault Brigade and 150 from the French Army’s 11e Brigade Parachutiste, will carry out a commemorative parachute descent onto fields on the outskirts of Sannerville, Normandy.

In the early hours of 6th June 1944, the same fields served as Drop Zone ‘K’ for the 8th (Midlands) Parachute Battalion, tasked with the destruction of bridges to restrict German freedom of manoeuvre.

Following the military parachuting The Red Devils, the Army and Parachute Regiment freefall display team, will do a display, including a tandem jump with D-Day veterans Harry Read and Jock Hutton. On D-Day, Mr Read, now 95, was a 20-year-old wireless operator and Mr Hutton, now 94, was a 19-year-old in 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion.
