Allerton Hotel
701 N Michigan Ave
Chicago, IL
Built: 1924
Architects: Murgatroyd & Ogden, with Fugard & Knapp
Style: North Italian Renaissance
When completed, the Allerton
Hotel’s North Italian Renaissance style was a novel and striking choice for Chicago.
Its style was an exotic variation on the historic types used in residential high-rises
built during the 1920s and >30s. Its warm-colored brick facade gave the Allerton an
inviting domestic character, and its three story stone base related to the height
of nearby residences.
In the 1940s and 1950s, the hotel housed a swanky lounge on its top floor, called the "Tip Top Tap". Although the lounge closed in 1961, the sign proclaiming its existence is still displayed on the building's exterior.
