The Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus AG is a brewery located in Rothaus, a district of Grafenhausen in the southern Black Forest at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, not far from Lake Schluchsee. It is owned by the state-owned holding company of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The Rothaus brewery experienced rapid growth in the 1990s and now sells ten percent of its beer production outside of Baden-Württemb.
A wort kettle (also called brew kettle, brewing kettle or brewing vessel) is a technical system that is needed, for example, in breweries for brewing beer.
The wort kettle is used by the brewer to boil the wort obtained during mashing and lautering for the purpose of sterilization, protein precipitation, hop dissolution, removal of aroma-intensive substances and to adjust the desired concentration of the original gravity.
The idiom "Da wird der Hund in der Pfanne verrückt" (That'll drive the dog crazy) is derived from Till Eulenspiegel's pranks, in which he threw a brewmaster's dog, "Hopf," into the brewing kettle. It is used as an exclamation of great astonishment, indicating that something is unbelievable.

Stella Artois is a pilsner beer that traces its heritage to 1366 with the founding of the Den Hoorn brewery in Leuven, Belgium. The beer takes its name from a beer launched by the brewery in 1926 that was called Stella—meaning “star” in Latin—and from the name of head brewmaster Sébastien Artois, who purchased the brewery in 1717.
Stella Artois is still brewed in Leuven, among other locations including the UK, and following various acquisitions and mergers, is today part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev brewery company (sigh). The beer lost its “import” status in the United States last year, when Anheuser-Busch began transitioning to U.S. brewing for the North American marketplace.

IMG_4393r Also known as the Christian Heurich Mansion or Brewmaster's Castle, is a Gilded Age mansion in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington D.C
The house, built in 1892-94 by architect John Granville Meyers for German immigrant and brewer Christian Heurich. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first two floors of the house are preserved, and include most of the original furnishings. In 1956, Heurich's widow deeded the house to the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.. In 2003 the Historical Society moved out of the house, putting the house on the open market. Amid rumours of plans to repurpose the house, it was bought and converted into a museum to preserve the original interiors. The museum is open for public tours
The brewery, which rested on the Potomac River is now the site of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Christian Heurich Brewing Company was the second largest employer in Washington D.C. during this time, apart from the Federal Government.

Ferdinand Effinger, Sr., a German immigrant, founded the family brewing business in Baraboo, Sauk County, Wisconsin in 1885. One of about 300 small breweries in Wisconsin when founded in the late nineteenth century, the Effinger Brewing Company was one of only 19 small breweries in the state in 1966, when the firm ceased brewing due to declining sales.
The original brewery complex, erected in 1885, housed Effinger's family and a saloon in addition to beer-making facilities. Eleven years later, Effinger was one of the earliest brewers in the state to begin producing bottled beer.
In 1911 Effinger reorganized the firm as a corporation owned by family members. In 1913-1914 the brewery was remodeled and expanded, providing space for new cellars, keg washrooms, and a mechanical refrigeration system.
With the advent of Prohibition in 1920, the company began producing root beer and near-beer. In 1921 the firm successfully converted to ice cream making and sales. Ten years later, the firm sold its ice cream business to the Borden Company and began reconverting the plant for beer production, which began in 1933. The firm continued its expansion program through 1948 when a new brewery building was completed and new bottling equipment was installed.
Throughout its 81-year existence, the Effinger Brewing Company remained a family-owned and managed business. The sons and grandsons of the founder served as corporate officers and as managers of the brewery. After the death of the founder in 1945, Ferdinand Effinger, Jr., became the firm's president and brewmaster, positions he occupied until the firm went out of business. Frederick J. Effinger, a grandson of the founder, served as secretary-treasurer and director (plant manager) from 1945 to 1966.

Macro Monday theme of the week is “Lids”. The beer cap is Shiner Bock. It has become the flagship of the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas. The brewery is not shy about claiming to be the 'oldest independent brewery in Texas.' The brewery was founded as the Shiner Brewing Association in 1909 by German and Czech immigrants with a desire for beer from the old country. Shiner Bock was introduced in 1913 and in 1915 German brewmaster Kosmos Spoetzl bought the brewery, giving it his last name.

After another craptastic day at work, it was nice to know there was a beer tasting at my local beer geek's shop.
Tonight there was a representative from Brooklyn Brewery sharing the love. Because of this, the "Brooklyner-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse" was on sale for 8 bucks! That alone was an excuse to go since I've been dying to try it.
Available for my tasting pleasure when I got there was:
Brooklyn Lager
Brooklyn Brown Ale
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale
Brooklyn Monster Ale
Brooklyn Summer Ale
Plus the big and almighty Brooklyn Local 1 & Brooklyner-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse.
The Brooklyner-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse is the result of the long friendship of Brooklyn brewmaster Garrett Oliver and Schneider brewmaster Hans-Peter Drexler. Garrett had always admired the delicate balance of flavors in Schneider Weisse, while Hans-Peter had long enjoyed the effusive hop character of Brooklyn East India Pale Ale and BLAST! Garrett’s concept for the collaboration was that each brewmaster would brew essentially the same pale, hoppy weissbock in the other’s brewery, but with different hopping to reflect the local hop flavor.
While I was there, I decided to also pick up a bottle of the German version of this collaboration, the Schneider-Brooklyner Hopfen-Weisse.
Are you as excited as I am? I know you are!
Maybe the most distinctive beer I've ever had, and easily one of the most delicious, Full Sail Ale's Lupulin (named for humulus lupulus, the scientific name for the hop plant) uses the same technique as dry-hopping (that is, adding after the boil), but brewmaster John Harris uses fresh First Gold hops from Goschie Farms in Silverton, Oregon. This new English varietal is in its first year in Oregon; expect to hear more.

We were in an old, renovated local mill today where artists, crafters, bakers, shop owners, letterpress printers, jewelers, and brewmasters, among other people, have eclectic booths and enclosed, designated display areas for creating and featuring their artistic endeavors. This building is a fascinating *work in progress* which has been ongoing for 14 years when spaces were opened up for entrepreneurs. We wandered around, as the place was relatively quiet, and happened upon this set of stairs which we did not choose to descend! But what a great shot to post on *Saturday for Stairs*!
This back entrance to the storage room of the Düsseldorf brewery ''Füchschen'' opens on to a road in the Old Town of Düsseldorf. The beer is a top fermented beer similar to English real ale 'bitter'.
The brewery pub at the other end of the building is a MUST for every visitor to the town!

The IPA was fashioned to survive the long voyage from England to India during the British colonization. Hops, hops and more hops! Red Racer IPA has an intense aroma and a long lingering finish. A beer for the connoisseur, this is the brewmaster's choice.

We began our operation in 1994, within months of the passage of legislation allowing brewpub operation in the great state of Texas. We found a public eagerly awaiting the enjoyment of our cold, freshly brewed beers. Long before the craft beer craze we were cranking out delicious award winning brews. As the oldest operating brewpub in the state, you could call us the "granddaddy" of brewpubs in Texas. We are located on Main Street Fredericksburg, Texas. In our fair little town, sidewalk consumption is allowed; you can take our cold craft brews on a sidewalk stroll down Main, fill a growler to take home or sit down with us and enjoy a brew paired with lunch or dinner... whatever suits your fancy. Our Brewpub serves German fare, pizza, burgers, salads and everything in between. The Brewery sits in a restored 1890s era building. In addition to its main room, the brewery has a large, air-conditioned biergarten. The second floor of the building provides "Bed & Brew" guest rooms, 12 rooms (one on ground level), each decorated in a different theme. We hope you'll join us soon.
Our Brewers brew more than 20 different varieties throughout the year, rotating our staples (Peacepipe Pale Ale, Enchanted Rock Red Ale, Not So Dumb Blonde Ale, Pioneer Porter) as well as seasonal selections. You'll find at least 5 selections (usually more) on tap for your enjoyment any time you stop in. Our Brewmaster has claimed many awards and we have long maintained our reputation for quality, fresh beer in addition to being "the granddaddy" of brewpubs. In operation since 1994, we are currently the oldest operating brewpub in Texas!
Street consumption is legal on Main Street Fredericksburg, making The Brewery a must-see in Fredericksburg's downtown historic district. Sit at the bar and watch the brewers at work while you sip your brew, or take your beer to go and stroll the shops on Main.
We take great pride in offering a consistent product and that doesn't happen by chance. Our beer is brewed from quality malt, yeast and hops by experienced and passionate brewers. From the dining room in our brewpub you can see much of the brewing equipment and often times watch our brewers at work.

Nano breweries seem to be the next big thing in the craft beer industry. Their is no clear definition of what a nano brewery is exactly, but one thing is for sure - they are small. How small? Well this photograph was taken inside NW Peaks Brewery in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, where they brew 15 gallon batches at a time. To give you a comparison of just how small that is the average home brewer (myself included) generally makes 5 gallon batches. Their is a real grassroots feel to nano breweries, most are operated out of garages or storage facilities by one or two people. NW Peaks for instance is a one man operation, and I rather like the fact that each time I come in to pick up a growler or have a pint i am being served by the head brewmaster the entire time.
Unfortunately it appears that I may have bumped my tripod while taking this 12 second exposure.

When West Flanders Brewing Co.'s brewmaster, Brian Lutz, decided to call a beer Mr. Chain-Blue Lightnin', he knew it had to taste as epic as its name.
Considering the brew recently won first place in the India Pale Ale category and Best of Show at the Colorado State Fair, it's safe to say he succeeded.
Dry hopped with Citra and Mosaic hops, Mr. Chain-Blue Lightnin' is a bitter beauty.
The award-winning Imperial IPA's name derives from the 1976 western "The Outlaw Josey Wales," starring Clint Eastwood. In the film, Eastwood plays a brazen, revenge-fueled outlaw nicknamed Mr. Chain Blue Lightning. Lutz, inspired by the character, knew the moniker eventually would become the name of one of his beers.
The 8.25 percent alcohol by volume ale is brewed on-site and available exclusively at the West Flanders tap house, 1125 Pearl St., Boulder. Lutz said the beer is one of the brewery's best sellers.

Balemug the Brewmaster:
There are few dwarves who are as wildy renown as Balemug the Brewmaster. Known throughout the lands of Warscape, Balemug is invited into hearth and home by all good folk, nobles and peasants alike.
Achieving the title of brewmaster in dwarven society is among one of the highest honors; for a dwarf's most important parts of life are war and ale, and Balemug excels at both. A dwarf will study the art of brewing for an entire lifetime before gaining the title of brewmaster, but Balemug achieved the honor in his first hundred years mark. Known for the most popular dwarven ales like 'Snorebringer' and 'Dwarf Lightning', Balemug travels the holdfasts and mountain ranges teaching the art of brewmaking to all he deems worthy. He has even taught the race of men how to brew more potent ales other than their 'milk suds' as dwarves call it.
Balemug also enjoys the art of battle. Accompanied by his rare Mountain Ram mount, Balemug's alcohol induced war chants can be heard above even the loudest of dwarven blackpowder shots. His coppersteel inlaid blundergun and battle axe serve him well as he fells his vile enemies. Wearing armor crafted from ancient Mountoak ale barrels, arrows and swords alike harmlessly thunk off like him like water on rock.
Many a dwarf warrior has Balemug to thank for victories in battle and good ale to celebrate afterwards. Drink on, stout Brewmaster!

Hermannator Ice Bock is a special seasonal release made for friends & family of Vancouver Island Brewing's original brewmaster, Hermann. This beer takes over three months to produce spending significant time at subzero temperatures to create a rich malt body, with notes of chocolate, coffee & brandied plums. It is the perfect beer to enjoy over the holiday season.
Jef Versele crafted this exclusive Gulden Draak Brewmasters Edition as a tribute to his grandfather Jozef Van Steenberge and the 230th birthday of the brewery. His inspiration came from his numerous trips to the United States and his deepest respect for the craft beer culture. This exclusive Gulden Draak combines the technology and the craftsmenship of the traditional brewing process. By letting the beer mature on whiskey barrels it gives it a distinctive and gental finish that you have never tasted before.
The Birmingham Main Line Canal heading towards Broad Street Tunnel and the canal's terminus at Gas Street Basin, Westside, Birmingham, West Midlands.
On 24 January 1767 a number of prominent Birmingham businessmen, including Matthew Boulton and others from the Lunar Society, held a public meeting in the White Swan, High Street, Birmingham to consider the possibility of building a canal from Birmingham to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal near Wolverhampton, taking in the coalfields of the Black Country. They commissioned the canal engineer James Brindley to propose a route. Brindley came back with a largely level route via Smethwick, Oldbury, Tipton, Bilston and Wolverhampton to Aldersley.
On 24 February 1768 an Act of Parliament was passed to allow the building of the canal, with branches at Ocker Hill and Wednesbury where there were coal mines. The first phase of building was to Wednesbury whereupon the price of coal sold to domestic households in Birmingham halved overnight. Vested interests of the sponsors caused the creation of two terminal wharves in Birmingham. The 1772 Newhall Branch and wharf (now built upon) originally extended north of, and parallel to Great Charles Street. The 1773 Paradise Street Branch split off at Old Turn Junction and headed through Broad Street Tunnel, turned left at what is now Gas Street Basin and under Bridge Street to wharves on a tuning fork-shaped pair of long basins: Paradise Wharf, also called Old Wharf. The Birmingham Canal Company head office was finally built there, opposite the western end of Paradise Street.
By 6 November 1769, 10 miles (16 km) had been completed to Hill Top collieries in West Bromwich, with a one mile summit pound at Smethwick. Brindley had tried to dig a cutting through the hill at Smethwick but had encountered ground too soft to cope with. The canal rose through six narrow (7 ft) locks to the summit level and descended through another six at Spon Lane.
In 1770 work started towards Wolverhampton. On 21 September 1772 the canal was joined with the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal at Aldersley Junction via another 20 locks (increased to 21 in 1784 to save water). Brindley died a few days later. The canal measured 22 miles and 5 furlongs (22⅝ miles), mostly following the contour of the land but with deviations to factories and mines in the Black Country and Birmingham.
Over the next thirty years, as more canals and branches were built or connected it became necessary to review the long, winding, narrow Old Main Line. With a single towpath boats passing in opposite directions had to negotiate their horses and ropes.
Telford proposed major changes to the section between Birmingham and Smethwick, widening and straightening the canal, providing towpaths on each side, and cutting through Smethwick Summit to bypass the locks, allowing lock-free passage from Birmingham to Tipton.
By 1827 the New Main Line passed straight through, and linked to, the loops of the Old Main Line, creating Oozells Loop, Icknield Port Loop, Soho Loop, Cape Loop and Soho Foundry Loop, allowing continued access to the existing factories and wharves.
A year earlier he had built an improved Rotton Park Reservoir (Edgbaston Reservoir) on the site of an existing fish pool, bringing its capacity to 300 million imperial gallons (1,400,000 m3). A canal feeder took water to, and along, a raised embankment on the south side of the New Main Line to his new Engine Arm branch canal and across an elegant cast iron aqueduct to top up the higher Wolverhampton Level at Smethwick Summit. The reservoir also fed water to the Birmingham Level at the adjacent Icknield Port Loop.
The Smethwick Summit was bypassed by 71 ft cutting through Lunar Society member, Samuel Galton's land, creating the Galton Valley, 70 feet deep and 150 feet wide, running parallel to the Old Main Line. Telford's changes here were completed in 1829.
By 1838 the New Main Line was complete: 22⅝ miles of slow canal reduced to 15⅝; between Birmingham and Tipton, a lock-free dual carriageway. It was also called the Island Line as it was cut straight through the hill at Smethwick known as the Island.
