Also called the Spotted Munia the bird is known in the pet trade as the Nutmeg Mannikin or Spice Finch. Its name is based on the distinct scale-like feather markings on the breast and belly. Diet consists mainly of grass seeds apart from berries and small insects. The species is endemic to Asia and occurs from India and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia and the Philippines. It has been introduced into many other parts of the world with feral populations established in Puerto Rico and Hispaniola, as well as parts of Australia, and the US.

The silver-breasted broadbill is a medium-sized broadbill, 16–17 centimetres (6.3–6.7 in) in length and weighing 25–35 grams
This female red-breasted sapsucker was busily working on this hole in the tree for a nest, when her work was interrupted by a prospective father. At Commonwealth Lake.
This Male Red-breasted Merganser was perfectly at home in a good wave on a very windy day. These ducks are members of a group called ‘sawbills’ because of their long, narrow bills with saw-like ‘teeth’ which are very efficient at gripping their fish prey. They are excellent under water swimming fish catchers.

This face-on view of a Brassy-breasted Tanager gives another perspective on this beautifully-coloured species…we can imagine we’re another of its kind looking at it. This sighting was at the feeder set-up at the wonderful Casa Tukani in the small city of Guapimirim, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. That accommodation option is operated by Irmãos Mello Birding Tours.

The blue-breasted kingfisher (Halcyon malimbica) is a tree kingfisher widely distributed across Equatorial Africa. This kingfisher is essentially resident, but retreats from drier savanna areas to wetter habitats in the dry season.
This is a lifer bird for me. They breed in the Arctic and funnel down through central North America on their way to winter in Argentina and Uruquay.
