A gold breasted starling (Cosmopsarus regius) inhabiting an aviary at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona. This species is native to Northeastern Africa: Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Was so happy to find an accommodating Sapsucker today. I find them very hard to photograph.

The Crimson-breasted shrike (Laniarius atrococcineus), Crimson-breasted gonolek, or the crimson-breasted boubou, is a southern African bird. It has black upper parts with a white flash on the wing, and bright scarlet underparts. What a delight to see these birds at close quarters and to get so many shots of them.

The Lilac-breasted roller is a beautifully colored African bird known for its acrobatic aerial displays during the breeding season. The sexes look similar, and juveniles lack the long tail streamers of adults. This species is unofficially considered the national bird of Kenya.

The diet of the lilac-breasted roller is primarily insectivorous, consisting of ground-dwelling insects, arthropods, amphibians, and other small vertebrates.

I've never seen one of these before and the local birders and photographers were pretty excited to have one regularly visiting. I've gone several times but only today was able to spot it and spend some time observing its behavior and hearing its songs. Its call goes between something harsh, like a jay, to something sweet like a songbird. It bounced inside and on the edges of a hedge picking insects off the leaves. I read that they are not native to Florida but have taken up a residence here. Otherwise, you need a passport to go see them.

It has been a little over a week now since I last saw these guys visiting the feeder-- not that they aren't around, I just haven't seen them. They are always a welcome visitor...

The species is insectivorous and hunts from a perch. Adults breed between January and May, excavating their nest into dead tree stumps. Both parents cooperate in raising the chicks.

I kind of lost track of them over the Summer. I was not sure if they had moved on. I was quite happy to relocate this one.

A Red-breasted Sapsucker, pausing for a moment from drilling for insects. The RBSA feeds on sap, bark cambium, insects, especially ants, and some fruits. Photo taken at Salmon Creek Park/Klineline Pond.

One of several Tangara tanagers endemic to the mountains of southeastern Brazil, the Brassy-breasted Tanager easily is distinguished from other similar species by its mostly green plumage with an orange-yellow (brass colored) breast patch, turquoise blue band across the sides of the head and crown, and black forecrown and throat patch. This species regularly joins mixed-species foraging flocks with other tanagers, including the Gilt-edged Tanager (Tangara cyanoventris), as well as with foliage-gleaners, becards, and other species. Its diet appears to consist entirely of small fruits and some insects. The Brassy-breasted Tanager inhabits forest edge, tall second growth, and even plantations, from about 600 m up to 2200 m, and its geographical range spans the states of Espírito Santo south to Paraná.
