i don't know what to think when you tell me you want to mail my last zine to a girl in spain you know from school who just got broken up with, you say my last zine is the classic ultimate breakup zine
compliments that make me sad but they probably should just flatter me
it's nice but also a bit sour in my stomach and i don't want to think about it ever
that is a list i am going to make, a list called "compliments that make me sad"
i am going to make a zine this summer of lists and i would like some help with it
i will ask my friends and family for their lists
and i will publish them
please send me a list
i will bother you for one later because no one likes to participate in anything ever!
fair enough
i want to participate in other people's art projects
the only place i have ever been able to do this successfully (be a part of someone else's art project) is www.learningtoloveyoumore.com which i think is beautiful and a perfect idea
i even got my brother to take an assignment from that website with me two weeks ago
he said, "this is hippie bullshit"
and i said, "please just try it with me."
and he said, "ok"
so we did it and submitted it and it was really nice, to me
and when he was done he said "this is still some hippie bullshit maureen." except he pronounces my name "marine" like the field of biology like the armed forces division, it makes me smile because i've stopped correcting him
and i said, "i'm sorry you didn't like it."
and he said, "who said i didn't like it? it was cool, but it was definitely some hippie shit."
things i think are funny:
brother who thinks everything not associated with will ferrel comedy movies, hot wings and public colleges as "hippie bullshit"
dramatic television music
junk mail
my mom thinking that eggs are vegan
dad who thinks that organic eggs are vegan
my family, in general
the fact that i have no real job a paper route is not a real job and am worried about getting one so i can buy my airplane ticket to south africa but as soon as i get the job i will realize i already have enough money saved up, really, and then work as few hours as possible
the fact that people take paperwork seriously, this is funny and annoying
listening to dirty projecters lps in my room drinking green tea and making zines
HELL YEAH, HELL YEAH
i'm all set, i'm good, i'm fine
After knocking over a glass table and breaking it, I decided it might be useful for a photo someday, so I kept most of the big pieces (but stupidly, only two of the three legs). I thought of a rough concept pretty soon after that, but as I tend to do every now and then, chose to put it aside just for a short, little while...
So... after about six months of having heavy, jagged shards of broken glass sitting around my apartment (and a couple of incidents requiring bandages), I finally did something with them. In the time that had past I'd also broken three drinking glasses and, naturally, saved them as well (Yes, actually I AM a klutz). So here is the result:
It took a while to arrange a time with Stacia (the model), and twice we had it scheduled but plans fell through (once because of a friend's pregnancy). When the schedule was finally worked out, I had to move several pieces of furniture out into my hallway to get the setting I wanted, as the room is small (a LOT smaller than in looks). Unfortunately the hallway isn't exactly giant, and the furniture basically barricaded the front door, trapping Stacia inside my apartment with me, surrounded by sharp slabs of glass and a hammer. Of course, she had brought her own gun to our previous photoshoot, so I suspect she wasn't too worried:)
The lighting set-up included one monobloc in a softbox high and about 45 degrees camera-right, pointing down at her face. I had another monobloc in a softbox right next to me camera-left a bit lower, bouncing light off the wall (both for fill light on Stacia and to try and get some depth in the objects on the floor). I put two speedlites in the window (one clamped to the handle) with CTO gels, using the curtain as a partial diffuser, to get the shadow pattern on the wall and ceiling. I also had on-axis fill coming from a speedlight stuck in an Orbis ring flash. The flashes were all triggered with Radiopoppers.
I did a lot of post-work to get the look of this shot the way I wanted (surreal), which, on its own, is already quite an involved, time-consuming process, involving two or more RAW file conversions, and lots of contrast masking with filters. There's no automatic action for this, as far as I know.
You've got to get the lighting right first, of course. No amount of editing can make good light when it wasn't already in the original photo; and anyone who thinks it's easy to just photoshop something any way you want and have it look good, please pass on your secrets to me:)
Since I had only kept two of the (table) legs, I used a tripod and moved them around in a couple of different frames and merge them together later to make it look like there were four. Unfortunately, I didn't realize during the shoot (but should've suspected) that I was repeatedly nudging the lens with the ring flash, which slightly shifted each frame. Not really enough to see it on the camera's LCD, but definitely enough to make merging the separate layers a gigantic pain in the... well, you know. Particularly since the six-year-old computer I was using at the time was so terminally ill that it sometimes took 10-15 minutes JUST TO SAVE A FILE. Grrrrr...
At least I can finally throw out those glass shards. Well, wait... hold on. Hmmm... maybe there's another photo concept that I can use them for... I think I'll just hold off throwing them out for a short little while...
P.S. I realize that technically there should be little pieces of glass all over the floor as well, but even I have my limits. Particularly since I'm already running low on glasses...

Thanks!

What do you do after striking gold with your first solo album, wrapping your third season starring in a hit series and earning raves for your movie debut? If you're Selena Gomez, you dance. At least, you get the world on its feet with "A Year Without Rain." A follow-up to "Kiss & Tell," Selena’s gold-certified Hollywood Records debut CD, "A Year Without Rain" shows Selena and her band, The Scene, in a whole new light, this one pulsating, multicolored and ready for the mirrored ball.
"I really wanted something that felt good to perform, but had a techno/dance vibe," Selena says. "I wanted something that had meaning and melody, and more empowering lyrics." That’s exactly what she delivers in "A Year Without Rain." Working with top producer/songwriters like Tim James & Antonina Armato, Kevin Rudolf, Toby Gad and Jonas Jeberg, Selena kept to a more quickened tempo, exploring themes of love, freedom and the joy of living for the moment.
Selena credits the album’s neo-techno leanings to her 2010 platinum-certified single, ‘Naturally," which pointed the way for her. That track "really helped me figure out where I want to be," she says. "There’s a feeling when I perform that song that I love, so when I was going back in the studio, I had a better understanding of where I wanted to be musically."
She gets right to it with the opening track, "Round & Round," an upbeat synth-driven song about reaching the limits of indecision in love. The plaintive "A Year Without Rain" may be more subdued, but its beauty impressed Selena enough to make it the title track. "When I got the song, I went through the roof," she recalls. "Everybody has that one person they can’t live without. It was exactly what I wanted to say." That goes double for the Spanish version of the song, Selena’s first recording in that language.
Having turned 18 this year, Selena has matured since making her professional debut at age 7, but girls still wanna have fun, which is what songs like "Spotlight" "Off the Chain" and "Summer’s Not Hot" are all about. "Rock God" features none other than Katy Perry on backing vocals, while "Intuition" boasts a duet between Selena and rapper Eric Bellinger in a tricked-out double-time salute to a positive attitude.
Selena slows things down on "Ghost of You," a ravishing ballad about a breakup so rough, no amount of "living crazy loud" can crush the memory. "It’s very beautiful, very raw," Selena says of the song. "Shelly Peiken co-wrote it. She knows me, knows about everything I go through, and knows how to express it in a beautiful way."
On the flip side, Selena comes back strong with "Sick of You," a Matt Squire-written and produced track about losing a loser ("You know fairy tales don’t come true/ Not when it comes to you"). The album ends with "Live Like There’s No Tomorrow," an epic power ballad expressing the creed by which Selena has built her life and career.
A Dallas native, Selena Gomez started acting at age seven when she landed a role in the popular television series "Barney & Friends," on which was a regular for two seasons. She landed her first film role in the 2003 sci-fi action adventure film "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over." She made her mark as an actress playing girl wizard Alex Russo in the hit Disney Channel series "Wizards of Waverly Place," which premiered in 2007 and has now completed three seasons. Selena and her cast mates won a 2009 Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program.
Selena then made an indelible impression with her starring role in 2010 comedy "Ramona and Beezus." Says Selena, "I wanted something completely different from my show. All these incredible actors, being able to learn from them and get my feet wet in the film world. It was the perfect way to get into it." Next up, a starring role in "Monte Carlo," in which she plays a teen on vacation in the romantic European principality. And of course, Selena is gearing up for the fourth season of "Wizards of Waverly Place."
Selena has branched out into fashion with the premiere of her new clothing line, Dream Out Loud, sold exclusively at K-Mart. But her instinct for charity remains strong. She is a proud UNICEF ambassador, and will appear for a third year at UNICEF's Trick or Treat bash, this time to kick off UNICEF's 60th anniversary. And with the new album comes a new tour with her band.
Having her own band has been a comfort for Selena as she hits the road with "A Year Without Rain." Scene members; Ethan Roberts (Guitar), Joey Clement (Bass), Greg Garman (Drums) and Dane Forrest (Keyboard) back her on tour and help shape her emerging sound. "On my TV show we have an ensemble cast that’s like a family," she says. "If anyone’s missing, you feel it. I wanted that family feel in my music, and we definitely have that with the Scene."
That family feeling had grown to include fans around the world, each of them all in when it comes to following Selena Gomez on her amazing artistic journey. Where’s she headed? She’ll let you know when she gets there. "I’m still figuring out who I am," she says. "I love expressing that through music, and through film. I feel at this moment in my life I couldn’t be happier."

Saw this rolled up on the driveway next door. Since no one actually lives there my dad went over to pick it up. He thought it was just some trash that was blown in from somewhere. Heh instead its a break-up letter that looks like a 10 year old wrote it.
Steve, whoever you are, be a man a break-up face to face.
The crossed out "love" is such a nice touch.
Breakup describes the feeling when of suddenly being left after a longtime relationship (such as marriage) without being given any explanation or the opportunity to make things right. It is the ultimate state of helplessness, deprived of any power to change this one-sided decision.

Can you imagine, if such a little river such as Ship Creek were like this, what it must be like on the Yukon or the Kuskokwim?
We stood there for 1/2 an hour, and we could watch Ship Creek break up, as well as hear it. There would be a loud crack, and we could see fissures develop, and chunks of ice break off and float down Ship Creek.

The sexy model who considered as the main reason of the breakup between Rebel Savage and former model Erica Armando showed up in a real elegant dress which caught all the eyes around her while she was getting out of the restaurant holding Rebel's arm. And when they got into Rebel's black 2003 Ford Crown.
I don't know why I felt compelled to photograph myself at that moment.
I had just told my girlfriend, who was also my best friend, that I thought we should see other people. She was very upset. I was in the grip of heavy guilt.
It worked out for both of us.

Looking at the sky,
Suddenly I realized it had been a month already…
Since you had gone.
The day that you were gone,
The world had split in half two.
I denied and I was completely mad.
I slept by the dial tone.
I could not stop crying.
Yes, indeed, I still cried sometimes,
But the tears were in my bleeding heart.
I could not understand…
Why wouldn’t you help me to grab the kite back again while it kicked at the tree?
Why wouldn’t you comfort me for my fear again while thunder came?
Why wouldn’t you bring an umbrella for me while it was raining heavily?
Yes, indeed, those were the days
That would never visit me again.
The moon and stars overheard my whisper,
‘ I miss you …'
Looking at the sunset,
I realized something, finally.
We were beautiful as the sunset
But we had to come to an end.
A book that confronted me as I stepped into the library... I can't even read a book like this, but I thought it was poignant.
I have read and heard stories about the noise of the Yukon being almost deafening, and huge pieces of ice being thrown onto the beach, sometimes crushing unwary campers.
This is the front of a breakup(ish) note that I found in the front parking lot of the Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers, MA. Sorry, James. Hope you worked it out.
