Day 278 of 365: "The Breakup"
My last date with Boo Boo. I'm gonna miss her!
But her parents come home today and I know she'll be thrilled to see them!
Oh yea. spring breakup. I've, over the past 4 or 5 years, timed trips abroad that let me avoid spring breakup here. You can see why! :-)

This sequence of shots wraps up my hawk food fight experience that took place right in the street next to my yard. These two were squabbling over the same European Starlings. Watching this battle unfold right in front of my eyes (feet away) was one of the most amazing experiences I've had. I felt like I was watching a nature documentary unfold.
The story began with me spotting one hawk sitting in my neighbor's yard. It kept opening its mouth and repeating a sequence of three squeaky calls. I could also hear another one in the elm tree, but didn't spot it until right before this fight broke out. The one in the elm tree also had a bird that it had killed, but apparently wanted more.
The fight began after the one in the yard heard the snowplow coming on the intersecting street and decided it was time to fly away with the prey (see previous series). Then the one in the tree dive-bombed it and they both tumbled into the snowy street next to the curb.
In this series I've also posted a shot of each hawk separately when the skirmish briefly broke up - with one still sitting in the street and the other up in a neighboring maple tree. The one in the street was the winner of the prey and then took off, forcing the one in the tree to follow in pursuit. They took the corner of the street and flew out of sight. Amazing!

Sunset from the Hecla Island causeway over the weekend. The ice is starting to change colour from white to blue so it should be breaking up soon. I just hope we don't get the snow they're calling for.
