May 6, 2007: Brazos Bend State Park, Texas Gulf Coast

Anhinga in Elm Lake in Brazos Bend State Park. These birds swim under water in pursuit of fish and frequently spear them on their beaks. I have seen them have trouble removing them from their beaks, and doing things like slamming them down on floating logs to try to shake them loose. It could be somewhat comical, if not for the fact that if they don't get the fish off their beaks, they can't eat. This one didn't seem to have any trouble, though, as it soon made a meal of this fish.

After a few pictures this guy had had enough and headed back down to the water.

This little guy was loitering on a tarp as I went to fold it. I thought he was interesting enough to pick up and photograph.

A fantastic looking tree in the Brazos Bend state park.

This bird dominated the pool. He spent most of his time watching from the edge, but would occasionally walk a circle through the area to push the egrets back. He did not hesitate to get into the faces of those who did not back away fast enough.

I don't usually like messy backgrounds, but this one works for me..

I'm not sure if this is one of the guys who posts here or not. He had a great position on this bird.
