A newly fledged owlet hangs out in a tree near its nest.

Barred owl

Strix varia

Washington Grove, Maryland

Available for purchase!

These birds were gathering prior to migrating but as in all families there are times of sibling rivalry and this is how I interpreted this scene.

Were they disputing the route remember neither had travelled it before or was it just a spur of the moment spat?

Kids!!!!!

The Nodding/Musk Thistle (Carduus nutans) is my favourite kind of thistle, especially at this stage, when the pinky purple flower has died and the beautiful pattern of the spiny bracts can be seen more clearly. Flower head is 4-6 cm in diameter. Photographed at the Erlton/Roxboro Natural Area on July 27th, when I called in for a short walk after my afternoon volunteer shift. There were a lot more of these plants this year, so I guess this invasive weed really does spread, lol. In Alberta, this plant is listed as Prohibited Noxious.

Came across this beautiful video of Bald Eagles flying, on YouTube. Superb footage from BBC and KPBS of American and European Eagles. Music by Abba. I did post it a couple of days ago, but after everyone had commented, so thought I'd post it again today.

Have been watching and waiting for the youngest of the two Hornby Island Eagles to fledge, but it looks like young "David" (as he has been named) is going to be waiting just a little longer - today, tomorrow? What a character this young branchling is, lol. It has been eight days since his older sibling fledged.

This afternoon, I called in at my local park and searched for the two Great Horned Owlets. When I went down in the pouring rain yesterday, all I could find was Dad, but no sign of Mom or the young ones. I had the feeling that the babies had fledged and become branchlings, but could see no sign of them. Photographer Phil told me that he had seen them out of the nest yesterday (or was it the day before?), so my gut feeling was correct. I was about to go home today, after a fruitless - or should I say, owless? - search, when my eyes caught sight of two very fluffy "behinds", LOL! They were perched way, way up in a tall tree, motionless (asleep, I suspect). After a while, they began to move and I managed to get a few distant photos. They must be around six weeks old, I think. Very unsteady on their feet when moving along the branch and I witnessed a few balance problems. At one point, I even let out a very loud gasp. Very cute to see. Oh, and Phil, they are MY owls, not YOURS, LOL! Thanks for your comment on my previous owlet image that had the long narrative (about malicious gossip) below it - hilarious, and I'm still smiling! Thanks for SHARING your information - the more eyes, the better : )

Juvenile Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) - Ryerson Conservation Area (near Deerfield and Riverwoods, IL), Lake County Forest Preserve District, Lake County, IL - 23 April 2016

I heard hissing and scrambling in the woods and quietly went in to check. There were 2 "branchling" Barred Owls on clinging to a pine tree just above our walking path.

Mid-June is the time that owlets leave the nest, taking short awkward flights. They are still fed and watched over by their parents. If you listen carefully to the videos you can hear this one hissing.

Daily #Art - Day 06-27-19

(2019) Branch-ling Republic

This is a satirical illustration depicting three umbrella cockatoos shouting for their rights to declare themselves not parrots, nor umbrella cockatoos; they are the branch-lings and they are fighting for the independence of fellow branch-lings.

Why? They must revolt against those "evil" oppressing parrots who are forcing them to recognize their root.

Viva la revolución, kids.

Such beautiful wings! Very cute to see. Needless to say, a cropped image : )

Let me introduce you to one of the two Great Horned owlets at Burnsmead, Fish Creek Park! Presumably, this is the older one, and s/he has now left the nest and ventured up the branch to higher "ground". Adorable to watch and always amusing when they lift up a foot and appear to examine their talons, as if wondering what it is, LOL. Would love to have been there when this large baby climbed upwards for the very first time. Balance still needs to be worked on, ha, ha.
