Where is my little one?

A young bird leaves the nest and is still fed by its parents for a few days, sitting on a tree, a so-called branchling.

This allowed the photographer to photograph the approaching adult Black Redstart.

This was a real treat. While on my morning walk around the lake (sans camera), I heard the commotion of chicks in a nest. I hiked back to my home and grabbed my gear. I found this trio to be in various stages of staying in the nest to venturing onto branches. I'm always mindful of spending too much time in "close" proximity to a nest, but Mom and Dad weren't bothered as they made several trips to the nest bearing breakfast.

Additional details on my blog.

About 150 yards off the coastline of the Yucatan Peninsula, I came across a mangrove thicket. I followed the flight of an adult bare-throated tiger heron until she landed. (Please see my post immediately preceding this one.)

I soon discovered the reason she had chosen this landing spot: Her nest containing two branchlings was nearby. Had she not landed close to the nest, I'm sure I wouldn't have spotted the young ones; her abiity to conceal the nest is quite remarkable.

The nest was perched about 15 feet above the water. Below the nest, a pair of saltwater crocodiles waited in the hope that one of the branchlings would make a misstep. 'Tis amazing how precarious a young life can be.

Michael Burnham is the most active branchling, but Ash Tyler and Sylvia Tilly aren't far behind in their efforts to leave the Starship Discovery.

This is a juvenile Barred Owl. I've heard them called Branchlings at this age. They are not really able to fly long distance. This little guy would doze and then call out to its mom and then go right back to dozing at Brazos Bend State Park, Texas.

Young tawny owls usually sit on branches, which is why they are also called branchlings. Branchlings cannot fly properly yet, but they can climb up suitable trees. He fell from the branch and sat down on a tree stump in the sun towards evening, where he had dozed and only became active again after dusk. The danger of foxes lurks on the ground, which is why you should try to put a branchling sitting on the ground back into the tree. This is then easily found by the old tawny owls and fed on.

Meet Charlie.

Charlie was named by the caring people in his neighborhood who frequently saw him hopping around on their lawns, porches and fences. Everybody loved Charlie! When Charlie went missing couple days ago, his people got worried. Being a curious young one he decided to hop the fence, ending up on the wrong side of that fence, amongst cars speeding by like there's no tomorrow. Charlie had his Guardian Angel right there with him, maybe sitting on his shoulder, telling him not to panic but watch and wait, help will come. And it did, in a form of yet another caring and observant human who brought this youngster to the local wildlife center.

Charlie was healthy, well fed, spunky and feisty. His parents had been doing a great job feeding and raising him.

Last night I had a pleasure reuniting Charlie with his owl and neighborhood family. Everyone was respectful of his space and inner wild owl even though he was growing up close to people.

When Great Horned Owlets (owls in general) reach a branchling age they step out from the safety of the nest and start exploring the surrounding world. They are more frequently seen in our yards now as humans are constantly expanding their territory and taking over woods and fields that once belonged to wildlife. This owlet here, even though he looks quite grown, is a fledgling learning to fly. His parents still feed and care for him. The branchling and fledgling owlets are experts in climbing trees, using their sharp talons and beaks. If you find an owlet hopping on the ground it's best to leave him alone... unless the owlet is like Charlie, in a dangerous situation or appears injured. Magical, lucky Charlie.

I was hiking at my favorite local park when I noticed movement down the trail and barely visible around a curve. I assumed it was a mammal, because it was fairly large and on the ground. But it was this cute, fuzzy Barred Owl chick trying to reach a higher perch. I did my best not to scare it, moving slowly and keeping some distance. The chick stayed quiet and kept an eye on me, but didn't seem upset. It used its talons to get a bit of elevation, maybe two or three feet off the ground. I worried about a flightless bird being out of its nest, but apparently it's normal for this species. A parent no doubt was close and would have responded quickly to a distress call.

I feel very fortunate to have had this encounter and wanted to share the moment. Be sure to view large to enjoy the fuzzies, :)

Great Egret (Ardea Alba)

This egret chick was determined to climb out of the nest, but something about the look on mom's face tells me she wasn't too happy about that!

Great Horned Owlet Branchling from the archives. I photographed this raptor approximately 6 years ago before sunset. Once hatched, they start out as nestlings, become branchlings at around 6 weeks old (move from the nest to branches), and on Day 49-63 days old, they are capable of flight. They tire easily so only fly short distances. The parents continue to feed the owlets for a few months. Once they leave their nest (fledge) the siblings stick together for several weeks, often roosting in a tree in the near vicinity. It all happens so fast compared to humans :)

Wishing you a peaceful Sunday <3

They are growing rapidly and the largest one will probably start learning to fly in about a week. You can see that it has moved up the branch and out of the nest.

I hadn't been downtown for many years, but yesterday, I had the chance to meet several friends for a birding walk at Pearce Estate, along the Bow River. After the walk, we carpooled to nearby downtown, hoping to find the Great Horned Owl family that people have been seeing. It was a much longer walk than I was expecting, but we were so lucky to find them, and not where I had been expecting them to be. As is often the case, Mom (?) and the three owlets were high up in different trees, not posing too well for most of the time, and not in good light. This owlet, that looked like the "middle child" of the family, did eventually sit up, so I was able to get this and a few other shots. The ice in that area was so treacherous, so I moved as little as possible, and extremely cautiously. A real treat to see this little family, though, and so early in the year! Mom must have laid the eggs around 1st January, as the owlets were pretty much adult-sized and either branched or fledged. Most unusual - wonder why this happened. We were half expecting the family to have moved from this particular area, but were so relieved to find that they hadn't.

Thanks so much, Dorothy and Stephen, for giving me a ride to downtown and back to my car! Without it, I would not have had the chance to see these precious little owls. Thanks also for the coffee and a treat afterwards - amazing how much better coffee tastes after walking for a few hours! It really hit the spot : )

There are hardly any new photos from Contacts showing up on my photostream today. I don't know if people just aren't posting new images or whether this is a repeat of a recent issue.

Zechengelände des UNESCO-Welterbes Zollverein in Essen-Stoppenberg.

As of yesterday, this little Great Horned Owl "branchling" seems to have become a nestling once again : ) It has experienced various adventures in the last 10 days or two weeks, but seems to be back on owlet schedule now. I guess we will never know what happened to start all this, though it is possible that this young one was blown out of the nest when we had several days of extremely strong winds recently.

This photo, from 24 April 2015, was taken when I called in very briefly at the park and found the owl on a high Spruce branch. Maybe it "missed" its two younger siblings, so returned to its place of origin : ) No activity from any of the owls, so the 10-minute "limit" on being there and taking photos was more than enough time for me to be there : ) Fully zoomed - Focal Length (35mm format) - 1200 mm.

Yesterday, on the way home from a great day with friends at Frank Lake, I called in at the park again for about half an hour. A bit more activity this time, with all three still together. I knew my "watching" time was up, but I also knew that the number of days before the Tax deadline were running out fast. Got my Taxes ready and finally fell into bed around 5:00 this morning!

"With its long, earlike tufts, intimidating yellow-eyed stare, and deep hooting voice, the Great Horned Owl is the quintessential owl of storybooks. This powerful predator can take down birds and mammals even larger than itself, but it also dines on daintier fare such as tiny scorpions, mice, and frogs. It’s one of the most common owls in North America, equally at home in deserts, wetlands, forests, grasslands, backyards, cities, and almost any other semi-open habitat between the Arctic and the tropics.

Great Horned Owls are nocturnal. You may see them at dusk sitting on fence posts or tree limbs at the edges of open areas, or flying across roads or fields with stiff, deep beats of their rounded wings. Their call is a deep, stuttering series of four to five hoots." From AllAboutBirds.

The two remaining nestlings have graduated to be branchlings. They're hopping around on the branches around the nest and flapping their wings a lot.

A week ago, on 10 August 2015, I drove to where one of the Osprey families in the city had their nest, built on a high, wooden platform. Luckily, I got there when the family was reasonably active - by the time I left, the three youngsters had settled down into the nest and disappeared from sight.

This photo is fully zoomed (48x, and according to the EXIF data, the Focal Length (35mm format) is 1200 mm), as I always stay far away so as not to stress any of the birds - also, those talons look really big and really sharp, and I still remember reading a number of years ago that Ospreys will attack anything or anyone that gets near their nest.

One of the adults had been perched on the end of this wooden bar. When it flew off in search of food, this young one that had been near the adult, very gingerly made its way the few inches to where the adult had been standing, turned around and, after some wing stretches and flapping, very carefully returned to its original spot. I also got a shot of one of the other nestlings when, with a powerful flap of its wings, it became airborne for a few seconds.

Some of the time, I could see one or both of the adults flying around, very high up. They returned to the nest with food a couple of times, but I was too slow to catch these moments properly.

"Unique among North American raptors for its diet of live fish and ability to dive into water to catch them, Ospreys are common sights soaring over shorelines, patrolling waterways, and standing on their huge stick nests, white heads gleaming. These large, rangy hawks do well around humans and have rebounded in numbers following the ban on the pesticide DDT. Hunting Ospreys are a picture of concentration, diving with feet outstretched and yellow eyes sighting straight along their talons." From AllABoutBirds.

Young tawny owl after a rainy night.

The night before, there had been a violent storm with thunder and lightning. The next day I went to see the little tawny owl again and found it sitting on the ground. It seems to have been a drastic experience for the little owl to have been caught in such a storm on the third day after fledging.

Brrr ....! I turned on my heating this afternoon (4 September 2015), when the temperature outside was 6C (feeling like 2C apparently). Yesterday, I took my winter jacket to have a long tear on one sleeve repaired, so I guess the weather thought it would be funny to give us temperatures that are more like winter for a few days : ) It's such a gloomy, overcast day, with four more like it in the forecast. Then back to much nicer weather, thank goodness.

Dippers begging for the fish

Die jungen Wasseramseln betteln um den Fisch

On her very first day out of the nest this female Peregrine, Falcona, was extremely nervous about flight. She had managed to either fly or climb up to a ledge two levels above the nest and a level above where she sits in this image. From that higher perch she watched as the adult female, her mother, flew into the eyrie below with food. Falcona very tentatively performed a wing-assisted jump down to the ledge where she now rests. The next level down to get back to nest was a bit of a larger gap and she wasn't quite ready to make that leap. Instead, she sat on this perch and called, begging for food. She sat watching as her brother, a veteran who had been flying for over a week, devoured the catch. Peregrines can't be weak. They must learn and become stronger and more self-sufficient. In my next visit, Falcona appeared to be well-fed, flying stronger and much more comfortable with her beautiful new wings.

I had the rare privilege of watching the events on this day at a naturally occurring cliff eyrie in PA that had decades before been occupied by the now extinct Eastern Anatum species. This unparalleled success story of species reintroduction has now also resulted in Peregrines finding those nests on their own, as I discovered this past spring. I sat fully draped in camouflage and hiding on a higher ledge about 60 yards away to prevent disruption. June 16, 2016
