... the activities of his brother Linus who has the impertinence of playing with Fynn's favourite toy mouse. Linus knows very well that mousie is off limits and he "borrows" it on purpose to provoke Fynn. It's a daily ritual and always ends with Fynn climbing down from his observation post to teach his brother a lesson. (see photo in the comments)

MDOT F9H #7182 is seen pictured at Brunswick on a splendid September 1981 day. Borrowed coaches trail the engine, outshopped from MK earlier that year. RJ Robl did a fantastic job of photographing these engines, and I am lucky to have several of his slides in the collection. Very helpful for when I have to kitbash these eventually. NS 29G is just underway from a crew change at Bluefield and is rolling west under the endangered N&W CPL at Bluefield, Virginia. The two EMD units will soon be getting a workout, as they will shortly begin their climb on the mountainous Pocahontas Division.

NS 255 makes it into downtown Lafayette alongside the CSX yard where the railroad relocation of the Lafayette District and the Monon Subdivision meetup. The roadrailers are once again rumored to be getting abolished this summer, and this time for real. The plan is to reroute the traffic to Toledo and convert the trailer service into a stack train. Definitely get your shots while you still can! (4/10/24).

As MARC commuter service continued to expand, borrowed equipment was the norm from the mid 1980s to the mid 90s until enough equipment was purchased to keep the services going. Here we see the Western Maryland's last GP40 teamed up with unpowered MDOT 7100 with a westbound afternoon run. The train has just gone through Washington Grove, and is passing Wayne Feeds. My grandfather recalls the mill being a frequent childhood "playground" for him and his friends. Just ahead and around the bend is Gaithersburg. This slide only has a processing date of May 1986, and no photographer information JL Sessa collection.

Dancontrino from Joedios came up with this idea, I just borrowed it. :)

Now I've reworked most of Cobra's high command duds - Big Boa, Crystal Ball, Overlord and Dr Mindbender. Raptor will require a lot more thought! :D

On a crystal clear morning in Northeast New Mexico, Amtrak's Southwest Chief encounters the first pair of semaphore signals on its westbound journey to Los Angeles. The Chief will now race through over 100 miles of "semaphore country" between here and Los Cerrillos, NM. The semaphore signals along this route are the last active mainline semaphores in America.

Unfortunately, their time is limited. Right now, BNSF signal crews are actively working to replace these signals. Soon, Santa Fe's semaphores will be resigned to the history books.

I have created a "photographer's guide" for those who are interested in photographing the semaphores of New Mexico. You can find it on my website:

As the days tick closer towards LaFarge moving their Green Bay operation to a new location and a failed preservation effort, the cement boat S.T. Crapo continues it's work as a storage barge until she eventually makes her final voyage to the cutting torch. Built in 1927 as the second purpose built cement carrier on the great lakes, she will be sorely missed by future generations of boat nerds.

Cup Runneth Over

Over 80% of the world’s almonds grow in California’s arid Central Valley, which suffers from the worst drought in 1,200 years and further aridification due to climate change.

One pound of these almonds uses about 1,230 gallons of water to grow – almost 12 liters for a single kernel.

The One Pound of Almonds installation makes almonds’ water footprint tangible. It consists of 20 concentric circles of gallon jugs (3.78 liters each) filled with water. A one-pound glass jar of almonds stands in the center of these circles on top of a small white pillar. To get to the almonds, visitors pass along a narrow pathway through the field of water in 1,230 plastic gallons, which will be lit from within at night by tiny LEDs.

One Pound of Almonds is installed on the playa of the drying Salton Sea, suffering from the same wicked problems of climate change, water laws, and changing hydrologies as the almond-growing Central Valley. And their fates are closely connected.

Using 1,230 plastic jugs and about 4,600 liters of water for an art project could be counterproductive to shining light on wasteful environmental practices. Therefore, we collaborated with communities around the Salton Sea and friends to collect used gallons and sourced additional jugs from a recycling place in Brawley. We fill these jugs with water we borrow from the Salton Sea and return it once the installation wraps up. The pillar with the pound of almonds is the only trace left behind on the shore of the Salton Sea. As a permanent, site-specific installation, we hope it continues to spark debate and reflection about agricultural practices and their ecological consequences in the region and beyond.

Week 7 of 52

What are you waiting for?

I'm serious about answering that question. It's a very confronting question to answer, and that is how I know it is important.

I'm waiting for opportunity to find me.

I'm waiting for people to understand me.

I'm waiting for the right moment.

We all do this. We all wait for things to happen to us, for opportunity to find us, for success to fall into our lap. Sometimes. Sometimes, we do this.

Anytime I feel that life is short it is because I'm waiting. I never, ever feel that life is short when I'm making my own opportunities.

We fixate on the clock and wonder when our time will come.

Our time is now. It must be, because nothing else is certain.

It must be, because time is not a thing that waits for us.

We use it, or it dies.

Our time must be now.

HLCX SD40-2 6100 was built in October 1971 as Burlington Northern SD40 6305.

The unit left BN's roster and became HLCX 6100 and was very active in the lease market as seen parked in UP's former Chicago and North Western Proviso yard in 1995.

In the process of being replaced, not the semaphores, but the footbridge at St Erth, My initial shot was further down the platform, but behind the hoarding the foundation for the new lifts and footbridge meant it was more important to capture the footbridge before it goes.

Just a little over 5 years ago, on a mid March morning a CMQ crew crosses over the Pan Am Main going to pick up their train on the interchange track. Using three borrowed GP40's they'll take the train North to Brownville Jct. for handoff to NBS. Unfortunately, the crew didn't' have good luck, by the time they reached Glenburn the 515 was dead, soon after 514 started acting up as well. When they reached John Dean Rd in Milo the crew couldn't make it any further and tied down, later that night some extra power came down and took the train the rest of the way to the Jct.

I considered making this one a black and white image, but i dont think it quite works without the reflected colours of the sunset in the flowing water and rocks.
