The boreal owl, the smallest owl in Alaska, stands out with its square facial disc, striking yellow eyes, and light-colored beak. Notably, females are larger and heavier than males, a common trait among raptors.
What sets the boreal owl apart is its exceptional hunting ability. Its asymmetrical ear openings allow it to locate sounds, giving it a distinct advantage while hunting accurately.
Primarily feeding on small mammals, such as mice, voles, and shrews, the boreal owl also adapts its diet to include various birds and insects, showcasing its resilience and adaptability in diverse environments.

The boreal owl owlets are getting bolder and should fledge soon.
A look inside revealed 5 owlets in the box. As it's warm today, one is almost always hanging out.
They are also getting more aware of the world. In this photo an airplane flew overhead and the owl tracked it.
Another oldie. The weather wasn't the best that day but, Topaz Sharpen AI made a big difference in my ability to use the image.

A friend called me this afternoon to tell me he had a boreal owl sitting at his bird feeder.
When I first got there, the owl was consuming a redpoll, so I guess we all have different definitions for "bird feeder"!
Another look at a Boreal Chickadee. I put a shot of a Black-capped Chickadee in the first comment box for a quick comparison. These shots were taken at the same location just a few feet apart. I hope to get the two in the same frame, but the Boreal is less common here and the two species seem to avoid each other.

A boreal owl is perched on a branch amidst dense foliage. Its brown and white plumage blends seamlessly with the dark, natural background!!
NS 1800 pokes out of the Allegheny Tunnel on its way west.
This tunnel is actually the oldest of the three bores through the ridgeline of the Allegheny Escarpment at Gallitzin. Originally called Summit Tunnel, Allegheny Tunnel was opened to traffic in 1854.
The New Portage Tunnel, on the other side of town, was built by the Commonwealth to replace the original Portage Railroad of the Canal System and opened the following year.
The youngest bore, the one that is properly named the Gallitzin Tunnel, opened in 1904. It was the only bore not enlarged by Conrail to accommodate double-stack container trains in the mid-1990s, and was closed and later sealed up.
