Open Sailing aims to design and invent future lifestyles to overcome any possible natural and manmade disasters stimulating people’s ingenuity and sense of solidarity. Might it be global warming or energy conflicts, we are living in a time where we are sniffing the ‘Apocalypse’, finally realising our human part of responsibility as the earth is crumbling. 2012 is a year when a collection of apocalyptic events are rumored to happen. We are taking 2012 as an ideal dystopic symbol we design for. 2012 is tomorrow, we must design quickly using these constraints and invent bootstrapping DIY technologies.
Open Sailing method is to convert apocalyptic threats into design constraints. From our compiled set of threat maps, we found that oceans are the safest locations. Ocean survival architecture became our new starting point, but we need to go further than surviving : how can we live together in this new fluid configuration and remain a hyper-connected intelligent social being? We are trying to make a truly “open architecture” : pre-broken, under-defined, reconfigurable, moveable, pluggable, organic, fluid. Can we reach a harmonious dynamic state of interdependence with each other and the earth? Is this the next step of civilization progress? Will we dissociate our concept of progress with infrastructure and metropolis?

Dr. Douglas C. Engelbart is an American inventor and early computer pioneert. He is best known for inventing the computer mouse, as a pioneer of human-computer interaction whose team developed hypertext, networked computers, and precursors to GUIs; and as a committed and vocal proponent of the development and use of computers and networks to help cope with the world’s increasingly urgent and complex problems.
His lab at SRI was responsible for more breakthrough innovation than possibly any other lab before or since. Engelbart had embedded in his lab a set of organizing principles, which he termed his "bootstrapping strategy", which he specifically designed to bootstrap and accelerate the rate of innovation achievable.

How it works
Participating startups will be given a space and a table to set up any promotional materials they like. Additionally, startups will be provided with a bucket (for kegs or bottles) and ice to keep their beer cold. In return, each startup must brew and provide at least 5 gallons of beer by August 1st, 2015 (1 week prior to the event for judging purposes). Startups, you are also responsible for serving your beer at the event.
The bulk of the event will be unstructured, so participants can mill around, visit with fellow startups, and drink plenty of beer. Around 8:00 pm, a panel of judges will share their picks for the best brews (first, second, and third place), as well as People’s Choice, and awards will be handed out.

Here is Fran Healy of pop band Travis mingling with the kiddies on some
African plain somewhere. Ostensibly this must be due to some Band Aid
thing. I didnt bother reading the article, only to scan for the phrase
Band Aid. No need. I can tell you what it says. Blah blah blah shocked
to see they have no food blah blah great band aid is having an impact blah
blah blah I have some real issues with famous folk or western folk in
general flying out to Africa to fact find and listen, when really, I think
its rather rude and distasteful to visit these poor people. Visiting isnt
the issue its the bullshit cuddles and serious interest they display in
reporting back to the Great Unwashed how bad things are (or were, or
whatever) whilst standing next to the folk who havent eaten for weeks.
Publicity I suppose. Well it obviously is. In the photo above the kids
thoughtfully wearing a Save the Children branded vest. I remain cynical of
big charities. When youre bootstrapping a company i.e. starting from
scratch with little funds, you are extremely careful with your cash. You
make your own desks, you work from home, you keep costs down by using old
printers that still work perfectly well, you use doors and bits of wood
nailed together to form your desks. You really are careful with your
expenditure spending money ONLY where it is absolutely necessary and
getting maximum value from your investment. While I can be ridiculed by
many in fact, Ive seen the ridicule happen real time it is a superb
skill to employ. An old business partner of mine insisted upon making all
international calls via one of those 0800 calling card companies that
charged only 2p a minute to call the states, whilst everyone else paid 40p a
minute via BT. While it caused her no end of frustration having to dial a
25 digit account number and pin each time, she did it it saved the company
maybe £30 or £40 a week in calls. Not a lot. But it added up. It wasnt
our money it was the investors money and her perspective was that we
shouldnt waste it at all. One which I agreed with. She was admirable in
her execution of this viewpoint. So when it comes to walking into the grand
old offices of these multi national charities, I find it quite irritating.
The public chuck in their one pound coins or phone up and agree to donate a
tenner a month to the folk in Africa. Only, quite a lot of this money goes
directly to landlords and service providers. Shouldnt it be generally
known that charities have shitty offices? Surely as head of a charity,
youd want to look donors in the eye when they come round to the office and
say see, look, we give as MUCH as we can to food and help where its
needed, which is why Im not offering you some poncy mineral water,
biscuits or a whizzy £2,500 chair to sit in. There are basic legal
requirements to be taken care of such as health and safety but after that
they should be cutting costs right to the bone.
Met a girl at the weekend with an absolutely superb concept for helping
people in these countries seriously and genuinely get out of poverty and
improve their situation. I hope to help her out if theres an opportunity
to do so.

Open Sailing aims to design and invent future lifestyles to overcome any possible natural and manmade disasters stimulating people’s ingenuity and sense of solidarity. Might it be global warming or energy conflicts, we are living in a time where we are sniffing the ‘Apocalypse’, finally realising our human part of responsibility as the earth is crumbling. 2012 is a year when a collection of apocalyptic events are rumored to happen. We are taking 2012 as an ideal dystopic symbol we design for. 2012 is tomorrow, we must design quickly using these constraints and invent bootstrapping DIY technologies.
Open Sailing method is to convert apocalyptic threats into design constraints. From our compiled set of threat maps, we found that oceans are the safest locations. Ocean survival architecture became our new starting point, but we need to go further than surviving : how can we live together in this new fluid configuration and remain a hyper-connected intelligent social being? We are trying to make a truly “open architecture” : pre-broken, under-defined, reconfigurable, moveable, pluggable, organic, fluid. Can we reach a harmonious dynamic state of interdependence with each other and the earth? Is this the next step of civilization progress? Will we dissociate our concept of progress with infrastructure and metropolis?

Bootstrapped Brews is a celebration of the things that make Colorado the state it is today: entrepreneurship, beer and charity.
Bootstrapped Brews, now in its second year, is the annual members’ conference (21 & up) of the Bootstrapped Brews Association (BBA). It is an opportunity to connect with like-minded Colorado-area startups, to secure bragging rights for making some of the finest homebrew in town, and to help an amazing cause with 100% of proceeds benefiting Promise Ranch. It is part networking event, part competition, and completely fun. We welcome any Colorado-based company with a startup mentality and a passion for brewing.
How it works
Participating startups will be given a space and a table to set up any promotional materials they like. Additionally, startups will be provided with a bucket (for kegs or bottles) and ice to keep their beer cold. In return, each startup must brew and provide at least 5 gallons of beer by August 1st, 2015 (1 week prior to the event for judging purposes). Startups, you are also responsible for serving your beer at the event.
The bulk of the event will be unstructured, so participants can mill around, visit with fellow startups, and drink plenty of beer. Around 8:00 pm, a panel of judges will share their picks for the best brews (first, second, and third place), as well as People’s Choice, and awards will be handed out.
