Under a Bonsai tree..........seen at the Devonian Gardens.

A small group planting, in an unglazed Japanese bonsai pot.

Spring is for repotting the little trees. I often use instant photos (and my phone) to document the process.

This is an elm, formerly part of a Saikei planting I did in the Summer of 2019. Other than some pruning and weeding I had not done much with it. It was not looking good and I thought it might be dead. I repotted it in early March (7th) and moved it into the plant room for recovery. It had spent the entire winter outdoors. It has responded quickly and vigorously.

The pot is not right for it, I find it too robust, but it is what I had and I needed to give the roots some space.

The film is Fuji Instax Mini, there was some sort of damage which may have been the result of some kind of pressure applied to the pack as it was placed in the camera. This is the first piece of film and the subsequent ones did not have similar "fault." I like the effect and may try to induce something similar in the future.

Having done a bit of cutting back of the over running rose bush at the back of the greenhouse I realised I had been a bit gung-ho . Saw the bloom and buds on a portion of bush chopped back and figured I ought to save these so an old bonsai pot , some dirt and some Cornish grit and it is allowed indoors now !

Samples of wild clay collected from near my home in South Yorkshire, England UK.

The sample on the left is full of coal dust from old coal mining works.

The clay will be refined and processed by hand to make workable clay by drying, then wetting down, then sieving. After that it will be dried on a plaster slab to a usable consistency, and It will be used to make stoneware ceramic bonsai pots. The yellow colour shows it has a high iron content and it will fire to a reddish terracotta colour.

I just repotted these two Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum) into ceramic pots made by myself.

Date - 5 March 2023.

They are shop bought saplings originally purchased from Morrisons a few years ago and they were planted in everyday potting compost. The new substrate is pure Japanese Akadama (Red ball soil) which should be much healthier for them. At some point I plan to cut them down even smaller so they will be around 4 inches tall. The one one the right is cultivar "Orange Dream".

Japanese White Pine Bonsai tree (Pinus parviflora) grown as Shohin (palm size).

The Bonsai pot is drum shaped and the surface of the soil has a layer of flowering moss. This tree is unusual in that it is grown from seed and not grafted onto a stronger Black Pine rootstock which is the usual practice.

The tree is approx 10 inches tall.

A Nanban style organic free-form bonsai pot which I recently made as a practice for a commissioned piece. The finished version will be about 50% larger and the back will rise up to form a crescent shape.

This one is 9" long, 8" wide and 5.25" tall. It was fired to stoneware 1200°C. I used a stone, lego, and brass cogs to create the textures.

Japanese White Pine Bonsai Tree (Pinus parviflora).

Newly repotted into a brown stoneware bonsai pot this tree stands 28 inches high.

View large to see purplish-pink flowers right at the top.

This is how the tree looked in May 2009.

The tree is developing a more balanced and open feel to it compared to the earlier photograph The dead low branch will be shortened and jinned at some stage.

The tree might look overpotted but I'm hoping for some vigorous growth so I can get some back-budding going, particularly on the sparce-looking lower branches.

English Oak bonsai tree (Quercus Robur) on an outdoor display bench.

Native species such as this need plenty of sunlight and free-moving air to promote healthy growth. This little Oak tree was collected in 1996 from local wasteland which was bulldozed soon after to create part of the South Yorkshire Forest.

The tree is around 16 inches tall (40cm) and is approximately 25 years old.

A sample of wild collected clay soaking down in clean water after being dried and having most of the larger impurities picked out. It will be soaked for a few days and then sieved to remove any remaining bits of vegetation, stones, and coarse sand. The end product will be a workable clay for making ceramic bonsai tree pots. The clay will fire to a reddish brown terracotta colour due to the high iron content.

Japanese White Pine Bonsai Tree (Pinus Parviflora).

I liked this little tree. It was small, compact and had really healthy green 5-needle clusters with the typical white stripe that White Pines have underneath each needle. It displayed cute little purple candle type flowers every spring. But not this year. It survived the harsh winter inside a cold glass-fronted shed but we had a couple of warm dry days in early spring and I neglected to check my trees properly and this one dried out...

At least it serves as an example of how not to look after bonsai trees.

The tree is around 7 inches (18cm) tall.

Chinese Juniper or Sargent's Juniper bonsai tree (Juniperus sargentii).

Photographed after repotting in late May 2009.

This Juniper has been neglected for a few years and was desperate for repotting. The branches were getting straggly and the foliage turning pale through lack of nutrients.

Weak foliage has been removed including a low branch at the front which has been jinned (shortened and de-barked to look like like natural weathering).

Other foliage has been finger-pinched and the tree is already starting to recover and look healthier.

When the tree gains more strength it will be wired and shaped .

This bonsai is 22 inches high and the trunk is 2.5 inches wide at the base.

Originally it was a spindly garden centre plant which was probably propogated from a cutting. It began bonsai training in 1995 and is around 20 years old now.
