Here is another image from my outing with Nate (genzapata), who ended up being the subject of this photo. This was such a fun outing for me. I am not sure if it was simply because I had not been out in a while, some of the new "tricks" I tried while I was out, or Nate being so fun to go out and shoot with. Most likely it was all of the above.

I warned you yesterday to be ready for your fill of sunflowers and so we continue the "flowery" journey. Normally I am one to desaturate and so the last two images I have purposely made an effort to use a little more color. I am quite satisfied with how it worked in this image, but for me the composition does it more than anything.

You see me refer to "magic" here a lot and this image really has it for me. I wish I knew how to define "magic" but I just cannot. In an effort to describe it, it is that feeling you got when you were a kid and you walked out of that movie that made you believe the things you saw on that big screen could really happen to you because you believed. It is that feeling you had the night before Christmas and you knew something special was about to happen. Maybe you would even hear Santa and his reindeer on the roof if you were still enough laying there under your covers. That, for me, is magic. Some images have it, most do not. I realize magic is subjective for the most part, but that is the fun of photography.

Have a wonderful day!

I thought I would try out the new Adobe Lightroom Beta for Windows for this image as it was finally released today. I will need to process another half dozen images (RAW's) or so to know what I really think of it. It will take a lot to peel me away from Phase One's Capture One Pro. Sorry if I sound like and advertiser ... unintentional.

This image was taken from my outing with genzapata the other night. This battery charger was laying on the floor outside of an old jail cell and kept screaming "CHEEEEEESE" to me as I walked by so I obliged. I wished I could have taken some cool-old-jail cell photos, but the cell itself was full of trash and in extremely tight quarters. When i go back I will try with new eyes and use my 18-55mm to see if there is something I missed.

This was taken inside of a historical hotel in downtown Prescott called St. Michael Hotel. It is just as you would expect; old, cool and creepy all at once. I had bigfootmadson be my "ghost" for this shot.

With the loop of Nemesis Inferno just behind

Last night I went out shooting with my brother in law and good friend Nate. We had a great time hanging out and were able to capture some good images in the process. This is actually the last image I captured before seeing the dreaded "CF FUll" blinking on my LCD.

First of all let me say that the bird-sized moth was a total fluke, but a welcomed guest in this image. Always a fan of negative space I was simply setting up a left heavy shot of this sunflower and just as I hit the button ... swoosh, in came mothra. As I am sure you can tell I used some fill flash to make the sunflower "pop" in the setting sunlight. I learned some good fill flash lessons last night which I hope to retain.

... and get ready to see your fill of sunflowers.

DIXIE IRON FIST

Benched in Los Angeles County, CA

i shot this, along with several other photos in various locations of downtown prescott, for a friend who you see here. she wanted some cool graduation photos and i did my best to deliver. we ended up with a ton of really great photos and i was able to try something new and different.

my brother aaron, nathan, rich and i went out last night for some long exposure moonlit photography ... talk about an adventure. we hit up "the tree" first as i mentioned yesterday. it all started out great as we hiked out about half of a mile off highway 89a. we started to set up camp when we realized we were surrounded by cattle. now normally this would not bother me knowing that they cannot see jack in the dark, but i have seen many a bull in this particular area which made us all a little nervous. we tried to be tough about it, but once the group behind us started closing in and making a good amount of noise we packed up and headed out before anyone got plowed.

we ended up at the granite dells where rich lives and were able to take in the beautiful scenery for quite a while. i like the photos i was able to capture but i am not in love with them. i will stare at the raw's for a couple of days i think before doing something with them and maybe they will grow on me. i was really hoping for some cloud coverage and it just never came. next time...

This sign is actually right next to this sign off the highway in Mayor, AZ. The two signs (yes this cow is actually a HUGE sign) were real close together which made isolating them a nice little frustrating challenge.

Haloing was unavoidable on this five exposure HDR since the sun was setting directly behind the giant cow in this photo.

If you want an idea of how big this sign actually is, check out genzapata's shot of me next to it.

Not much to say other than this is an empty chair at the end of a creepy underground hallway that dead-ends in downtown Prescott.

To see it from another perspective check this shot.

Well our big event was last night and I have a couple busy days ahead of me and then I hope to get out with genzapata on Monday.

I took this image because I liked all the detail in the door and knob. It showed its age quite well. I hope you all have a great weekend.

It has killed me to not post a photo the last few days, but I promised myself I would no longer post images I was less than happy with just for the sake of consistency. It has been freezing here in Prescott making outdoor photography near imposible and I have not had much time to set up anything indoors.

Today Nathan and I were finally able to go out and shoot for a little while. We had a great time shooting for the first half and then we explored off road for a while. After almost getting both of our wives SUV's high centered in the middle of nowhere we decided to turn the vehicles around and head home.

Devious looking fellow.

The title comes from the theme song of my sons favorite show, Little Einsteins.

This photo is from a night at the local carnival with my good friend and brother-in-law Nate (genzapata).

I learned a lot about shooting in low light that night. It was also one of the first times I had taken my camera out in a very populated public place. I also saw the need for a real fast (high quality) zoom lens somewhere around the 18-100 range.

At next years carnival I will come more prepared!

this is an exhibit at the museum of contemporary art in chicago. you can read about this specific piece here. i have to say that the "mca" was one of my favorite places we visited while in chicago. it is pretty small, but has a very powerful collection of art. the entire third floor is full of photography collected from over the past fifty years or so and i was absolutely blown away by the work i saw.

nathan and i attempted to get some long exposure night shots last night under the full moon, but were a bit unsuccessful. the cloud cover was just a little too strong and we kept ending up with white washed skies. i have yet to look at the raw's, but i am not too optimistic. as always with nathan it was a fun adventure so not all was lost. i almost ran over a pony sized skunk and came within feet of a deer that would have destroyed my two door honda civic. maybe the skies will be a bit friendlier tonight.

update: all was not lost last night. i did end up with two cool shots, one of which i will post when i am done with my chicago series.
