just another hummer shot.

I was happily sitting at my bench in the tropical avidary at the Adelaide Zoo, when this ibis flew over to the branch overhead. I took the shot and moved out of range as soon as possible.

Little known fact about me. I'm kind of a big deal in the gull world, I would say with all birds in fact. You see, when a bird spots me out in the wild, I am instantly recognised as one of the winged world's most desirable targets.

Unsure if they have actually spotted the real me, they drop little packages to try to get me to look up. This allows for a more positive identification towards their 'big year' challenges.

Sometimes when one of these feathered creatures comes across me, they are instantly starstruck and sit there not knowing how to react. Such as the case was with this one, who followed me around for a bit before he asked for my autograph. I think he was happy about it.

I know my Pentax 6x7 is a beefy camera and all, and if it came to fisticuffs, I am pretty sure it would beat the tar out of most other cameras these days. But on this day I think it met its match. This is Sean, yes I actually work with him, and yes he is wearing a gas mask (he carries one with him most places). He is wielding a Fairchild 4x5 aerial camera. It is meant to be operated from airplanes and from the feel of it, could survive being dropped out of one too (the camera that is, not Sean). It shoots what I am guessing was a 4x5 roll film. That's right, as if a single sheet wasn't enough they actually and apparently made this stuff in a roll-film format. Unfortunately you cannot seem to get it anymore, so I am planning on loading this camera with a roll of 5 inch paper instead. Now I just need to find an airplane...

Easily the coolest part of this camera is the cocking/winding mechanism. Think of a lever-action shotgun and you are getting close...

Our Daily Challenge "The Elements - Water, Fire, Earth, Air"

I just got back from a long day on my bicycle. I woke-up to a white world because it’s been snowing last night and I thought this was a good time to go out hunting. I never realist that we had so many goose here in The Netherland. I was actually going for a more dramatic shot, with al the goose flying away. So here I was flapping with my arms and making a lot of noise but only tree of them were scared of me (or had sensitive ears) but I’m very satisfied with this result.

Technique:

1/200 exposure

f/5.6

ISO 100

300 mm

I set the aperture as wide as possible and focused on the flying gooses. The farm is nice and sharp because of the distance of these gooses and made the ones that are at the front so vague. I only just discovered an extra bonus and that’s that there feet and beaks stand out against the white snow.

When you know a bird knows you are there and yet flies directly overhead anyway, it's a good bet he is up to no good. Little Blue Heron above Horsepen Bayou.

After downloading from my camera, I was surprised to see this action shot of a House Wren. As one of my Flickr Friends once said, 'Sometimes our lenses can produce something that we don't expect to see.' Such is the case here but the lens isn't the only thing producing something unexpected. Don't be offended, just marvel at The Call of Nature. :o)

It has been a while since I have done any digital cross processing. This image truly needed it. I tried about a dozen other "tricks" I know for a little over an hour before the final treatment you see here.

This was an awesome night of shooting with Nate (genzapata) at the local carnival. I am really anxious to see some of his shots as he had the guts to ask for a lot of portraits. I am still too shy I guess ... working up the courage slowly.

I have been wanting to shoot this abandoned car for weeks since I first saw it off the highway and finally got the chance.

This spot ended up being a far greater challenge for genzapata and I than we thought as we hiked to it. It was really tight quarters and made for tough angles, the wind was blowing like a mug which made HDR near impossible. We ended up framing our shots and then waiting for the wind to settle so we could get our multiple exposures.

More pictures of this old beauty to come later ...

As I approached this Hawk he decied to fire back! How dare he! :-)

I think this may be a 1 year old juvenile Swainson's Hawk but after my last bird naming fiasco I'm not so sure. If anyone knows for sure please let know.

I think the fast shutter speed which I had set for in-flight capture froze the warp core ejection action.

I revisited a local kids dentistry place yesterday with nate (genzapata) called kidzaam. This place always feels a little sick and twisted to me. The outside looks like it is straight from a cartoon, but we all know what goes on inside ... drills, shots and teeth pulling.

I had to do some serious desaturation to most of my shots from this location because everything is so brilliantly painted/colored and this image was no exception. Throw in a slight crop to 3x2, some masked photo filtering and some custom vignetting and this is what you get.

I also shot some HDR's, which I have not done in a while, and plan on working on those soon.

It happens. Just don't stand underneath.

The title is a quote from one of the best movies ever made, Bottle Rocket. It is a hilarious and clever movie about nothing and probably the best spent 92 minutes of my life.

Fools Get Schooled Spot and Arek

6064 S. State St. Chicago, Illinois

As genzapata and I hiked further up the creek from the old car, we saw something off in the distance which ended up being this old, nasty, beat up shack.

As we approached, it got more and more freaky looking, to the point where it took us a good five minutes of walking around it before we got bold enough to peek our heads in.

Once I peeked my head in I immediately noticed the floor was completely covered in VERY LARGE rat droppings. I looked up at the roof to see if there were any of them waiting up there to jump down and eat the brains of an unsuspecting visitor and saw nothing.

So we made our way in to find dirty, but brightly colored, walls that were made from old aluminum signs. My attention was right away brought to this corner where a random chair sat. Out of it came this shot. Ironically genzapata and I ended up with almost identical shots, which is not all that suprising considering the lack of options in this little shack.

More to come later ...

Bomb release mechansim on one of the aircraft at Gatwick Aviation Museum.

For those interested in a visit, now is a good time to go as the owners will soon need to dispose of some of the aircraft to try and win the next stage of their well publicised with the planning authority.

Gatwick Aviation Museum has all the signs of becoming another Dale Farm, for entirely different reasons.

Another modest use of HDR to enhance the image. I tried this same shot without the HDR merge and it lacked all the detail in the bottom of the storm drain.

I hope you like the results as much as I do. This photo is best viewed one size larger, but do not dare go any higher.
