Continuing my series of delving into the hidden and intimate landscapes of the plant world. Here small seed heads or emerging flower buds appear to be craning their necks towards the light in a bid to escape the darker depths below.

I'm occasionally asked how I make these more 'painterly' images and whether it's done in camera or in post processing. There's a bit of both. The essential image is made entirely in camera - nothing added or taken away (except for minor dust spots etc. The swirly effect is entirely down to many elements in the scene simply being out of focus - achieved by a combination of wide open aperture, close proximity to subject and a close up filter on the lens. In post processing I make small adjustments to highlights, tones and shadows and finally, I use a split toning technique to either cool down or warm up the highlights and shadows in the scene. No extra layers are added or blended and there is no multiple exposure. I find simplicity is key. Allowing the main subject to 'breathe' and be seen within its softer surrounding context tones and elements tends to work well too.

This is NOT what you think!! These HAVE NOT ALL been in Explore! Some - yes.

Have you ever gone to Big Huge Labs' link for your photos that have been in Explore? Well I did today and they have their special SANTA Scout running. It lists all your photos in the list of "Most Interesting" or INTERESTINGNESS from 1 through 72 per page. And you can save each page of images if you choose. I thought this so funny, I just saved the first page you see here.

So from Big Huge Labs' SANTA Scout - Happy Holidays!!

This picture was taken with strong afternoon sun backlighting the subject who was in partial shade. Apart from overall exposure adjustment, sharpening and noise reduction in Lightroom, the main editing was dodging and burning in Photoshop.

Shot with my Super-Takumar 85mm/f1.9 lens on Fuji XE-3 camera. The focus can be very tricky, especially at 1.9, but when you nail it - pure bokeh bliss. I love how the vintage lens coatings interact with the sensor in this modern digital camera. Unexpected results and lots of trial and error!

Sorry for not visiting your streams... I am having an awful migrane - and I can't stay in my office for long... Hopefully I will be fine again tonight - at the latest tomorrow...

See you then. Have a most wonderful & lightfilled day everybody!

bliss can be a state of profound satisfaction, happiness and joy, a constant state of mind, undisturbed by gain or loss. savor it when you reach it.

Morning dew drops + macro lens = bokeh bliss :-)
