This squirrel and I are friends of a sort! She's a bit of a ham, and I always have my camera with me. I like her white eye rings and the white on her little snout. I also like the texture of the moss and the bokeh and blur behind the squirrel. These are not effects or anything, just how the shot turned out.

Off to bed early for me tonight, will catch up over the weekend! Hugs Friends!

Hugs and thanks for viewing! =o)

It's not often, I don't think, that people go for crisp. clear shots when there is so much fun to be had with DofF and bokeh and blur - it's always tempting to go for those effects. I'd have loved to do mountain scenery but Nottingham is rather short on mountains, so I went instead for cabbage. I wish I loved eating cabbage as much as I love simply marvelling at its beautiful folds and crinkles.

WIT:

Cabbage on table in front of sunny window, camera on tripod, aperture priority (it will only go as far as f8) and B&W setting, a little under exposed to bring out contrast.

A little GIMP work...

touch up the scaling on her beak,

sharpen to bring out feather detail,

duplicate layer, blur layer, mask out bird and foreground, to give fake bokeh and blur out cage bars.

Took a very short walk with the camera tonight - not really feeling great about photography at the moment so I've deleted the majority of the pictures, this one and a couple of others made the cut (for now)

Photographing bees is harder than I anticipated based on their speed and in my mind, unpredictable flight patterns. My strategy was to focus on a group of lavender flowers and wait for the bee. The colors of the flowers, the stems and the contrasting yellow of the bee reinforce the feeling of spring.

The image was originally shot in a horizontal format. The left side of the photo was empty of any detail so I cropped to a vertical format to support the orientation of the pant. The slight bokeh and blurred background with the repeating color patterns allow the viewer to focus on the detail in the foreground. Interestingly I think the shape of the eye of the bee almost mimic the pattern in the lavender buds. The downward direction of the bee contrasts with the upward direction of the flowers and the bee faces into the top of the curved bud. I think this image could be cropped even tighter as an option with the just the bee and the flowers back into a horizontal format.

Post production included the cropping, minimal white balance adjustment and sharpening. I have a tendency to underexpose as I'm taking the image and manage adjustments in post processing.

Some random flowers I stumbled across in Beijing.

Photoshopped for tones only; bokeh and blurring are as shot using the Lensbaby Plastic Optic.
