Le Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet vous transporte vers l’époque des années 1930.
Ce magnifique biplan, doté d’un moteur en étoile, a traversé les âges en changeant de rôle et utilisation à chaque fois avec succès.
Le « Kaydet » fut conçu en réponse à un appel d’offres de l’armée américaine pour un avion d’entraînement de base, par Boeing, dont Stearman Aircraft était une succursale.
En 1931, Lloyd Stearman quitte la compagnie qu’il avait fondée et donc, étrangement, il ne participa ni à la conception ni à la fabrication des Stearman, qui pourtant portaient son nom.
Jusqu’à la fin de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, sous l’appellation PT-13 (Primary Trainer) puis PT-17, suivant le type de moteur, il devient l’avion d’école de base des futurs pilotes américains ou alliés. Il est un des aéronefs d’instruction primaire le plus construits, avec plus de 10 000 exemplaires.
Après-guerre, nombre d’entre eux sont convertis en avions d’épandage agricole. Le Stearman devint aussi une star à l’écran, dans des films tels que La Mort aux trousses d’Alfred Hitchcock, Le Patient anglais, ou plus récemment, dans Les chevaliers du ciel.

British Overseas Airways Corporation was the British state-owned airline created in 1939 by the merger of Imperial Airways and British Airways Ltd. It continued operating overseas services throughout World War II. After the passing of the Civil Aviation Act 1946, European and South American services passed to two further state-owned airlines, British European Airways and British South American Airways. BOAC absorbed BSAA in 1949, but BEA continued to operate British domestic and European routes for the next quarter century. A 1971 Act of Parliament merged BOAC and BEA, effective 31 March 1974, forming today's British Airways.
Aircraft registration number G-BYGC was stripped of its British Airways Chatham Dockyard design at a paint bay in Dublin airport, before being repainted with this livery which featured on BOAC aircraft between 1964 and 1974.
