Tasked with rebuilding London in the decades following the great fire of 1666, players juggle building requirements, bank loans, and poverty as they strive to realize their vision for the city. The game features a unique mechanism of playing cards to develop the city, then "running" the city by taking all the card actions simultaneously. Players have to repay all their loans before the game ends, but need to worry only about how much poverty they're creating relative to the other players.

When people are playing board games they're easiest to take pictures of, the pictures just aren't very interesting :)

We played lots of boardgames last weeks. The settlers of catan is our favorite currently. I bought it during the holidays and it's very exciting.

I love to play strategy games at my computer but it's a lot of fun to play these boardgames with friends too...

Cynthia came up with the idea of creating a variation of Monopoly called Jimopoly as a gift for our friend Jim.

Basically she would replace all the properties and chance cards with things specific to his life. It's a huge inside joke. The chance cards are rediculously funny and the money has been completely re-done.

It took about a year to complete.

Cynthia created all the items and I found a Monopoly Photoshop template that let me create the board and the deed cards.

I took the picture used on the cover months ago with this project in mind.

We gave it to him last night.

Last christmas I wanted to get my brother a Lord of the Rings version of monopoly, but I didn't like the commercial version with the actors' faces plastered on it and such... so I made my own, with a twist.

Here it is all set up. I made the coins out of polymer clay, the houses and castles are wood, and the surface is of symbols I've designed to represent each of the properties, along with the official map in the center. I printed my designs and the map all on some antique-colored calligraphy paper, and then roughed it up and tore edges to make it a little more faux-ancient. Check this picture to see notes on what all the properties and such are.

Railroads have become rivers, utilities have changed to things more ancient, Chance has become the Palantir and Treasure Chest has become Treasure Barrows. Coins instead of bills and no ones any more - we round up to the nearest 5, the copper colored coin.

It was an enormous effort. And good thing it was a hit with my brother..... Or I'd just have to kill him. ;)

Edit - I'm making another one! You can follow the pictures starting here. Each time I've got some worthy pictures and details, I'll post more and link them together. Thanks for all the interest! Click here to see the first flickr-blogged step.
