Construction crews began the demolition of the Mac Auto Loans building on West Fifth Avenue this week, and a new development is set to take its place. Bluedog Capital Partners bought the property in May and has plans to build a roughly $40 million apartment complex in its place.
The apartments will be called Mac on Fifth. They are also hoping to keep the iconic Mac Auto Loans sign that is a familiar sight to residents in Knoxville.
“We’ve got to work with the city to get a variance in order to accommodate the size, the location, and the neon use of the sign. So, we’re working really hard to keep it and incorporate it into our new design,” Harris said.
The original building was built in the 1950s and the new 5 story tall apartment building is set to open in 2024.

This striking mural at Darwin Écosystème in Bordeaux showcases the vibrant diversity of urban street art. On one side, a woman’s expressive face with contrasting eyes seems to pierce through the wall with intensity. On the other, a playful blue dog wearing a yellow cap adds humor and lightness. Together, they create a visual dialogue between beauty and whimsy, embodying the free and experimental spirit of this creative hub.
Two of three dogs in a sculpture created by Mark Chatterley. The dogs are larger than life-size. Unlike many artists, he uses clay for outdoor sculptures. He applies a high-fire technique that creates a hard, metal-like surface. He also developed a glaze, crater glaze, that can be used with the high-fire process.
Sculpture Statement:
“Several years ago, I had a studio dog named Snoopy, I used her as a model. After she passed away, the sculptural dogs started getting larger. They are a stylized version of what my dog looked like. The large dogs are the maximum size my kiln can hold. They are made from high-fired clay with a crater glaze. Each one was hand built; no molds were used.”

Blue Dog underwent major reconstructive surgery this morning. His tail was sewn back on, his ears were reattached, and his head was reassembled. We used fabric swatches from all of my nephew's "important" people: his mom-mom, his grandma and pop-pop, and his mom and dad. Aunt Dottie's blue thread is holding all the pieces together.
No more tears.

Met this gentleman at the bar where my partner and I were discussing business over a few beers last night. Craig knew him from another activity his son is in and saw quickly that this person didn't belong anywhere near a driver's seat. Craig drove him home. Craig is a good man.
