The Center for Internet and Society (CIS) once again participated in National Robotics Week, organized by the Robotics Caucus of the U.S. Congress and leading robotics companies, schools, and organizations. In connection to NRW, Stanford University held a Robot Block Party & job Fair on April 11, 2012. This event will showcased cutting edge robotics technology from throughout the Bay Area.

About 40 demonstrators from Frackfree Mahoning Valley blockaded access to a horizontal fracturing well under construction in Jackson Township on Sunday.
The well is operated by Consol Energy, and the group says it is located within the environmentally protected area that surrounds the Meander Reservoir, which provides more than 200,000 people in the Mahoning Valley with drinking water.
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a process in which sand, water and chemicals are pumped into shale at high pressure to release natural gas and oil trapped within the rock thousands of feet underground.
The protesters blockaded access to the well pad for almost five hours, starting at 10:45 a.m., after which the blockade was ended, according to Sam Rubin, a member of the anti-fracking group.
The blockade took place without arrests or confrontation with workers or police, Rubin said.
Protesters were supported by people from across Ohio, who chanted, sang songs and listened to addresses by the Rev. Monica Baisley-Martin and Atty. Staughton Lind.
The action was organized under the banner of Frackfree Mahoning and Frackfree America.
According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, Consol Energy says safety, compliance and continuous improvement drive its operations. The company says it takes its operational footprint very seriously and has worked closely with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Agency to obtain all necessary permits. That includes a floodplain permit to operate at the site.
Frackfree Mahoning Valley contends that fracking contaminates ground and surface water. They say that no matter the safety record of a company, wells fail, and over time, all wells break, becoming sources for water contamination.
Group members say the main objective is to see to the safety of families in the area.
This action comes just days before the Youngstown City Council is set to decide whether to sell mineral rights on city lands. The city may consider selling its mineral rights to raise more money for demolition and neighborhood improvement projects.

My comment:
Drilling one hole for oil and gas on leased property using composite concrete for encasement without injecting brine and other hazardous substances and fracturing the shale and extracting the oil and gas TO BE USED IN THE USA- YES.
Horizontally drilling many holes invading other people's property (including State-owned property such as Meander Reservoir and Beaver Creek State Park) and injecting brine and other hazardous substances causing pollution of groundwater (that will pollute Meander Reservoir, Beaver Creek and the Mahoning River) and then fracturing the shale and extracting the oil and gas TO BE USED IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES OTHER THAN THE USA- NO!!!
(And why are "landowners" not allowed to extract oil and gas on their own property for their own use or for starting their own business selling oil and gas to their community?- maybe because so-called "landowners" really don't own the land to begin with?)

Am 14.01.2018 haben in Berlin zehntausende Menschen an die Ermordung der Sozialistenführer Rosa Luxemburg und Karl Liebknecht vor 99 Jahren erinnert. Rechte Freikorps-Soldaten hatten Luxemburg und Liebknecht am 15. Januar 1919 in Berlin ermordet. Seitdem versammeln sich an jedem zweiten Januarwochenende tausende Menschen auf dem Friedhof Friedrichsfelde, um Kränze und rote Nelken niederzulegen. Zu der Veranstaltung auf der Gedenkstätte der Sozialisten rief wie immer Linkspartei auf.
Darüber hinaus fand wie in jedem Jahr neben dem stillen Gedenken an der Gedenkstätte auf dem Berliner Friedhof Friedrichsfelde auch eine Demonstration linker Initiativen und Gruppen statt. An dieser Veranstaltung beteiligten sich rund 5.000 Menschen. Kurz vorm Erreichen der Gedenkstätte kam es zu Rangeleien zwischen der Polizei und den Demonstranten Grund hierfür war offenbar das Mitführen von verbotenen Fähnchen der kurdischen Volksverteidigungseinheiten (YPG) sowie der Frauenverteidigungseinheiten (YPJ). Die Polizei nahm mindestens zwei Personen vorläufig fest. Nach kurzer Zeit beruhigte sich die Lage wieder.
In Berlin sind am 14. Januar 2018 trotz eisiger Kälte mehrere zehntausend Menschen auf die Straße gegangen, um an die vor 99 Jahren ermordeten KPD-Führer Rosa Luxemburg und Karl Liebknecht zu erinnern. Traditionell werden am zweiten Sonntag im Januar an der Gedenkstätte der Sozialisten in Friedrichsfelde Kränze und rote Nelken niedergelegt. Luxemburg und Liebknecht waren am 15. Januar 1919 hinterrücks von rechten Freikorps-Soldaten in Berlin erschossen worden, nachdem zuvor der von Liebknecht angeführte Spartakusaufstand blutig niedergeschlagen worden war. Dieser hatte einen Generalstreik ausgerufen und damit versucht, die aus der Novemberrevolution hervorgegangene sozialdemokratische Übergangsregierung abzusetzen.
1987 wurde zudem ein Denkmal am Katharina-Heinroth-Ufer eingeweiht, seit September 2012 erinnert auch eine Fußgängerbrücke über den Landwehrkanal zwischen Zoo und Tiergarten an die ermordete Kommunistin Rosa Luxemburg. Von der Brücke aus war die Leiche Luxemburgs am 15. Januar 1919 in den Landwehrkanal geworfen worden. An Karl Liebknecht erinnert eine Stele am Nordufer des Neuen Sees. An dessen Ufer war er von hinten aus nächster Nähe erschossen worden. Neben Liebknecht und Luxemburg werden unter anderem auch Franz Mehring, John Schehr, Ernst Thälmann sowie den Dichtern und Schriftstellern Erich Weinert, Friedrich Wolf und Willi Bredel gedacht.
Während an der Gedenkstätte im stillen gedacht wurde und Spitzenpolitiker der Linkspartei der ermordeten Arbeiterführer, darunter der ehemalige Parteichef Oskar Lafontaine, Bundestags-Vizepräsidentin Petra Pau und die Vorsitzenden der Bundestagsfraktion, Sarah Wagenknecht und Dietmar Bartsch, die Vorsitzende der Partei DIE LINKE Katja Kipping, Kränze und rote Nelken niederlegten, fand zur selben Zeit die traditionelle Gedenkdemonstration statt. Hier hatten sich am frühen Morgen über 5.000 Menschen versammelt und zogen etwas später über die Frankfurter Allee nach Lichtenberg. Die Demonstration endet traditionell an der Gedenkstätte der Sozialisten auf dem Zentralfriedhof Friedrichsfelde.
Der diesjährige Luxemburg-Liebknecht-Gedenkdemonstration stand auch in diesem Jahr im Zeichen des Rechtspopulismus und damit verbundenen Rechtsruck in Europa, dem Bundeswehreinsatz in Syrien sowie der Nato-Operation „Atlantic Resolve“. Dementsprechend brachten viele Demonstranten ihren Unmut darüber zum Ausdruck und forderten auf Schilder und Transparente, ein Ende der "Rüstungsexporte und Drohnenmorde" sowie den Abzug aller NATO-Soldaten aus Osteuropa. Darüber hinaus waren Themen wie der stetig wachsenden Sozialabbau, Rassismus und die Kritik an der europäischen Flüchtlingspolitik, Gegenstand dieser Demonstration.
Organisiert wurde die Demonstration von einem breiten linken Bündnis unterschiedlichster Strömungen, die in zahlreichen Blöcke unterteilt waren. Die größeren Blöcke bildete unter anderem der Sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterjugend (SDAJ), einem marxistisch-leninistisch orientierter Jugendverband. Aber auch die North East Antifascists (NEA) stellten zusammen mit der Revolutionäre Perspektive Berlin sowie der Roter Aufbau Hamburg einen antifaschistischen-internationalistischen Block. Unter dem Motto „Repression hat Tradition. Widerstand auch! Mourn for the dead, fight like hell for the living!” beteiligten sich hier ebenfalls über 500 Personen.
Aufgrund des Mitführen von verbotenen Fähnchen der kurdischen Volksverteidigungseinheiten (YPG), Frauenverteidigungseinheiten (YPJ) sowie Portraits des inhaftierten Vorsitzenden der Arbeiterpartei Kurdistans (PKK), Abdullah Öcalan, kam es auf der Frankfurter Allee Ecke Atzpodienstraße kurzzeitig zu Rangeleien mit der Polizei. Der hintere Teil des Aufzuges wurde daraufhin gestoppt. Bei den Auseinandersetzungen wurden laut Augenzeugen mindestens zwei Personen aus dem Aufzug herausgezogen und festgenommen. Nach einiger Zeit beruhigte sich die Lage wieder und der Aufzug setzte sich wieder in Bewegung. Zwar begleitete die Berliner Polizei den antifaschistischen-internationalistischen Block bis zum Vorplatz der Gedenkstätte, zu weiteren Zwischenfällen ist es allerdings nicht mehr gekommen.

Mod Blocks - pattern in the winter 2014 issue of Modern Quilts Unlimited
This guy is a twin/full size quilt and I was inspired by some regency style wallpaper when designing it.

The intension was to focus on the block and fingers while keeping everything else out of focus.
Did not come out very well though.

She asked for a wonky star with the fabrics she provided. I'm afraid mine isn't too wonky, though...
I cleaned up my overflowing scrap bins over the holidays. After cutting postage stamps, charms, and jelly strips I started making these paper pieced string blocks with the left over scraps.
