I'd rather call him the star kicking man. This was difficult to process in PS trying to bring out the nebula while keeping the brighter stars from bloating uncontrollably.

Turns out to be my final image of 2019. Looking forward to more and better astrophotography in 2020!

This is an actual letter from an Austin woman sent to American company Proctor and Gamble regarding their feminine products. She really gets rolling after the first paragraph. It's PC Magazine's 2007 editors' choice for best webmail-award-winning letter...

Dear Mr. Thatcher,

I have been a loyal user of your 'Always' maxi pads for over 20 years and I appreciate many of their features. Why, without the

LeakGuard Core or Dri-Weave absorbency, I'd probably never go horseback riding or salsa dancing, and I'd certainly steer clear of running up and down the beach in tight, white shorts. But my favorite feature has to be your revolutionary Flexi-Wings. Kudos on being the only company smart enough to realize how crucial it is that maxi pads be aerodynamic. I can't tell you how safe and secure I feel each month knowing there's a little F-16 in my pants.

Have you ever had a menstrual period, Mr. Thatcher? Ever suffered from the curse'? I'm guessing you haven't. Well, my time of the month is starting right now. As I type, I can already feel hormonal forces violently surging through my body. Just a few minutes from now, my body will adjust and I'll be transformed into what my husband likes to call 'an inbred hillbilly with knife skills.' Isn't the human body amazing?

As Brand Manager in the Feminine-Hygiene Division, you've no doubt seen quite a bit of research on what exactly happens during your customers' monthly visits from 'Aunt Flo'. Therefore, you must know about the bloating, puffiness, and cramping we endure, and about our intense mood swings, crying jags, and out-of-control behavior. You surely realize it's a tough time for most women. In fact, only last week, my friend Jennifer fought the violent urge to shove her boyfriend's testicles into a George Foreman Grill just because he told her he thought Grey's Anatomy was written by drunken chimps. Crazy!

The point is, sir, you of all people must realize that America is just crawling with homicidal maniacs in Capri pants... Which brings me to the reason for my letter. Last month, while in the throes of cramping so painful I wanted to reach inside my body and yank out my uterus, I opened an Always maxi-pad, and there, printed on the adhesive backing, were these words: 'Have a Happy Period.

Are you fu*%ing kidding me? What I mean is, does any part of your tiny middle-manager brain really think happiness - actual smiling, laughing happiness is possible during a menstrual period? Did anything mentioned above sound the least bit pleasurable? Well, did it, James? FYI, unless you're some kind of sick S&M freak girl, there will never be anything 'happy' about a day in which you have to jack yourself up on Motrin and Kahlua and lock yourself in your house just so you don't march down to the local Walgreen's armed with a hunting rifle and a sketchy plan to end your life in a blaze of glory.

For the love of God, pull your head out, man! If you just have to slap a moronic message on a maxi pad, wouldn't it make more sense to say something that's actually pertinent, like 'Put down the Hammer' or 'Vehicular Manslaughter is Wrong', or are you just picking on us? Sir, please inform your Accounting Department that, effective immediately, there will be an $8 drop in monthly profits, for I have chosen to take my maxi-pad business elsewhere. And though I will certainly miss your Flex-Wings, I will not for one minute miss your brand of condescending bull sh*t. And that's a promise I will keep. Always!

Best,

Fun facts:

You can die from using tampons.

To wear a pad is possibly the most uncomfortable, worrying experience a female can ever go through in her day-to-day life.

Not all cramps can be defeated by pills.

Every month, all at once, women get horrific mood swings, painful uterine cramps, headaches, fatigue, bloating, the necessity of either wearing a diaper-like apparatus or shoving a piece of cotton where cotton should not go, and worst of all, several days' worth of bloodflow from their vagina.

Lovely.

You know what? I don't care what you say - this is absolutely worse than being kicked in the balls. Several times worse.

Body Fat is the “enemy” of every gimmicky beach body program, Plexus or Shakeology advertisement, or personal trainer.

As America’s obesity and diabetes epidemics continue to climb (with obesity hitting a record high in October 2017 at 40-percent of all adults and 20-percent of all kids), it’s no wonder the diet and health industry is aimed at selling us the secrets to: “Lean out,” “Tone up,” and “Get shredded.”

And who doesn’t love seeing Before and After pictures of formerly frumpy, unhealthy bodies with, seemingly, overnight, washboard abs, thigh gaps, and cut shoulders?

So in our efforts to “lose body fat,” we Google search answers until the wee hours of the night, swear off carbs and run at Level 10 on the treadmill at Orange Theory Fitness, hoping that our hard work and diligence will pay off.

However, despite the rules, our workouts, super clean eating and “secrets to body fat loss” sold by clever health marketers, something is not working.

After all…if it was, why would the diet and health industry continue to be a multi-billion dollar industry? And why would America’s chronic health epidemics continue to worsen—not “get better.”

Answer: The secret(s) to losing body fat naturally may not be in the dogma rules many trainers, ads and shake companies claim we “should” follow.

Beyond eliminating carbs, fasting and counting macros…there are a handful of other secrets to losing body fat naturally that most trainers won’t tell you.

Here are 8 (Essential) Strategies for Natural Body Fat Loss (that your trainer won’t tell you).

Eat Fat

“Fat burns fat.” It’s true. Fat is the most nutrient-dense and energy-rich substance we consume, and it is necessary for making every cell in our body strong and less permeable. Think of your cells like a raisin or a smooth bean. If your cells are like a raisin (shriveled up, and permeable), they allow more toxins and sugars inside. They are unable to be strong and withstand the exposure and consumption of non-essential nutrients, and consequently, are more apt to “store” things like sugar and toxins inside the cells, and become less healthy overall. If your cells look like a bean, however—they are supple and smooth. They are less immune to storing toxins and sugars inside, and consequently, they are stronger and more resilient. When we eat healthy fat, we build up the outer layer of our cells to be LESS PERMEABLE, and less apt to “store” fat. You (and your body) are fueled and have energy to “go strong” throughout the day.

In addition to composing the outer layer of your cells, eating healthy fats ALSO protect our hormones and metabolism from riding the blood sugar roller coaster that we ride when we eat a low-fat diet, or higher carbohydrate diet (even “healthy carbs”). Fat helps keep your blood sugar from dipping too low or skyrocketing too high, which can, in turn, impact your cortisol (stress hormones). When the body is stressed, the LAST thing it wants to do is shed body fat. In addition, when the body is stressed—and not used to eating fats because you don’t eat enough of them—it cries out for the only thing it knows it will get from you—sugar or low-fat foods (that you keep eating to fill the food void you’re having). The cycle goes on…and body fat loss is not on your body’s agenda.

Reach for 1 to 2 healthy fats with each meal, and in place of sugary snacks or carbohydrate-based snacks, reach for a healthy fat or protein as the base.

Some healthy fat ideas?

Raw nuts and seeds, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, coconut butter, avocado, olives, ghee, grass-fed butter, full-fat fermented yogurt, coconut yogurt, fatty cuts of organic meats, pastured eggs, avocado oil.

Fat does a body good.

Don’t Fear Carbs

Carbs are NOT the enemy. Contrary to the claims that completely eliminating carbs is “the secret” to fat loss success, when we go too low of carbs, particularly veggies here, we risk eliminating fiber—which is essential to elimination (ie. poop patterns), healthy gut bacteria and metabolic balance.Extreme diets of any sort can set your “metabolism off” negatively, since cortisol (your stress hormone) may be impacted—especially if your body is already in a stressed out (ie. “HPA-Axis Dysfunction”) state.

Research continues to ask: “Low Fat vs. Low Carb Diets: Which One is Better?” But the kicker here is…everybody is different.

For example, studies of women who go on a ketogenic (high fat, extremely low carb diet), show that, for women who have experienced “blood sugar issues” and “insulin resistance,” ketogenic diets CAN BE beneficial as a short-term dietary approach.

However, for women who may have their blood sugar more under control, BUT who have some HPA-Axis Dysfunction (ie. adrenal fatigue or hormone imbalances), a ketogenic diet MAY NOT be helpful—and actually may be more harmful in the long run.

In addition, carbohydrates supply much-needed pre-biotics (fiber) that are necessary for helping build and create a healthy gut “microbiome.” Without these carbs, any efforts to establish a healthy gut (Strategy #3) will be more of a struggle, since probiotics (HEALTHY gut bacteria) need pre-biotics to thrive.

Why gut health matters? We’ll get into it in a minute, but essentially: If your gut is not healthy, then the rest of your body (metabolism included) will not be healthy, nourished and able to…thrive either.

The kicker? There has YET to be a study that shows that a balanced diet over all ever did any harm at all.

Therefore, instead of thinking in terms of extremes for body fat loss, aim for the simplest, realest foods and balance as possible, building your carbohydrate sources on dietary sources the human body thrives upon. Generally this may look like:

Body Fat Loss Carb Picks:

Leafy Greens (cooked and raw). Aim for at least 1 to 3 servings/day.

Pre-biotic Carbs. Aim for 1 to 2 servings, especially of green-tipped bananas or plantains, cooked and cooled potatoes, winter squash and sweet potatoes, Jerusalem artichokes, onions, garlic, asparagus.

Fiber-rich Veggies. Broccoli, zucchini, yellow squash, asparagus, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, celery, cucumbers, etc.

Starchy Tubers. Minimal to Moderate. Keep for 1 to 2 servings/day (maybe a pre-biotic) Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Squashes, Carrots, Beets, Yucca, Jicama.

Fruits. Minimal. 1 to 2 servings/day. For the short-term, some people find tweaking or lessening fruit consumption helps for the short-term.

Grains. Not ideal (for absorption issues, and higher-connection to bacterial overgrowth)

By aiming to include more healthy fats into our diet, alongside moderate protein, and moderate carbohydrates (primarily in the form of real foods), we turn on our metabolism revving engine and help keep our blood sugar stable (for longer)

Count Energy Not Macros or Calories

Our body doesn’t see food in terms of macros or calories. It sees nutrients. That said, it needs LOTS of energy-revving, nutrient-dense foods to thrive.

The problem many macro or calorie based plans run into is that they fixate on numbers, scales and measures, without acknowledging the nutrient density in foods—and how your metabolism benefits from foods that supply LOTS of energy (and color).

For instance, 1/2 a cup of gummy bears with high-fructose corn syrup may supply your body with a punch of “quick digesting carbs” after a workout, but the nutrient composition and health it provides for a healthy metabolism and blood sugar balance is completely DIFFERENT than 1/2 a cup of berries or a small sweet potato.

And although chicken, broccoli, oats, asparagus, egg whites, peanut butter, olive oil, rice and rice cakes, give your body some protein, fat, and carbs, how color-rich are your meals?

Less color (or variety)=Less nutrients=Less metabolism revving power.

When we consume LOTS OF COLORFUL veggies, body-boosting healthy fats and essential sustainable proteins (for the muscle shaping and supportive amino acids), our metabolism comes alive—extracting various vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to keep your body revving.

Some energy boosting foods?

My top picks:

Dark Leafy Greens

Colors of the Rainbow) Veggies (Aim for 2-3 different veggie colors at each meal)

Berries

Citrus (Lemon, Orange, Lime, Grapefruit)

Organic Herbs (Parsley, Cilantro, Rosemary, Thyme, Sage)

Organ Meats,

Fermented Foods (Sauerkraut)

Pastured Eggs & Poultry, Grass-fed Beef & Wild Caught Fatty Fish

Coconut Oil, Cold-Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Ghee or Grass-fed Butter

Avocado

Raw Brazil Nuts, Walnuts & Macadamia Nuts

—Just to name a few.

While you’re at it, make sure you are EATING ENOUGH. Under-eating is just as “detrimental” as overeating. Remember: “More (energy)” is NOT a bad thing.

Stress Less

Stress is the #1 driver of all disease—including “stubborn body fat.” Unfortunately stress is inevitable in our rat-race society, however, it IS an often overlooked factor in areas beyond mental forms of stress.

Even if you don’t think you’re stressed out, stress goes far beyond mental stress. Daily stressors—like blue light exposure, screens (at night), lack of time spent in nature, burning a candle at both ends, sedentary or over-active lifestyle, etc.—threaten metabolic balance.

Biologically, your cortisol (ie. stress hormone) needs to be in a state of balance in order to shed body fat or let go of “unwanted” pudge. If your body feels threatened, cortisol levels get out of sorts in order to cope with the stress, and consequently, the LAST thing your body wants to do when it’s running from a bear inside (ie. stress) is comply with your body fat loss protocol.

This is called “HPA-Axis Dysfunction”—dysfunction of the hypothalmus-pituitary-adrenal gland axis that governors of their stress hormones and metabolism.

Some simple (but effective) game changers for balancing cortisol?

Shut off screens in the evening hours, or power down to “Night Shift” (like f.lux) and use Blue-Blocking glasses

Get fresh air—at least 30-60 minutes each day

Move your body with a “Goldilock’s” approach. (Too much exercise will shoot your cortisol in the foot). De-stress naturally with regular exercise without over-exerting or pushing your body beyond limit.

Get off the treadmill. Build a foundation of lean muscle with strength trainIng (ie. weights 2 to 5 days per week), and less focus on cardio, cardio, cardio! For balance, sprinkle in a little bit of HIIT (ie. sprints, Cross-Fit style workouts, 1 to 3 times per week) and endurance training (1 to 3 days)—such as 2 days of HIIT, and 1 to 2 days of spinning, swimming or running, all supported by daily lifestyle movement (walking, playing with your kids, standing at work, etc.), and plenty of walking and simple movement

Just say “no” to things draining your schedule, energy or time.

Get your beauty sleep.

And, all things considered, the mind is still a powerful tool. Countless studies demonstrate the effectiveness of stress reduction (in the mind) to help suppress and alleviate an otherwise stressed out metabolism (ie. cortisol levels). Incorporating a practice of deep breathing, meditation or prayer, meditative movement (ie. stretching, yoga, dance), and reading and listening to positive truth (ie. positive podcasts, books, speakers, etc.) are all tactics for mindfully reducing stress. Check out the book the “Placebo Diet: Use Your Mind to Transform Your Body” for an interesting read on the placebo phenomenon

Eat Mindfully

Speaking of stressing less, MINDFULNESS (particularly with meals) can help “reduce cortisol and even abdominal fat, with research to back this up. In a study of 47 participants, half of the group incorporated mindful eating into their daily eating practice, the other half did not. Results revealed that the mindful eaters lost a significant amount of body fat compared to those who did not. The take home? Incorporate these techniques into your own meal times:

Chew your food (fully)

De-screen (turn off the TV, computer and even books)

Assess and check in with your own level of hunger and fullness. You don’t have to always finish your plate; and sometimes, you may want seconds. Check in to your gut on a scale of 1-10 (1=starving, 10=stuffed)

Be aware of how food makes you feel (Are you bloated, constipated, breaking out, anxious, have allergies, etc.? Something may be in your food, protein powders or bars that is not sitting well with you).

Don’t eat the same things every day. Incorporate a variety of nutrients from real foods.

Get Your Beauty Sleep

Sleep is a natural anti-stressor that is also like a magical “pill for body fat loss.

It’s no secret LACK of sleep doesn’t do a body good. If anything, leaving you feeling groggy, tired and out of sorts. However, when it comes to fat loss specifically, lack of sleep also works against your body. One study of participants on a moderate-calorie diet showed that those who slept 8.5 hours, as opposed to 5.5 hours, lost 50-percent more body fat than the less-sleep group Individuals

Sometimes the “secret to success” involves LESS doing (ie. dieting, working out, trying so hard), and MORE BEING.

Lose From the Inside Out: Heal Your Gut

Speaking of the gut….Stubborn metabolism? Unwanted body fat? Underarm jiggle or love handles you just can’t shake?

Beyond stress, one essential factor most people don’t consider when it comes to body fat loss is what’s going on in their gut—the gateway to health (including a healthy, lean body).

If you have an underlying gut issue (ie. bacterial overgrowth, fungal overgrowth, imbalanced gut bacteria, chronic bloating and constipation, low stomach acid, a sluggish liver/gallbladder), this will lead to an underlying “stress” (ie. ie. cortisol levels that are too high or too low) or nutrient deficiency and malabsorption issue.

The result? Your body is going to fight against you, no matter how clean you eat OR how much you workout.

A study (Hjorth et al, 2017) on the effectiveness of a gut-healing protocol in people on a “fat loss” program found those who focused on healing their gut, versus those who did not, lost an average of about 11 pounds of body fat (with only 3 of those pounds related to diet alone).

Other research (Haas et al, 2017) on the “effectiveness” of intermittent fasting (IF) has shown that, in individuals with a “healthier gut” (less bacterial overgrowth) and better digestion show benefits from the IF technique, versus those who have an unhealthy gut microbiome.

A study (Ott et al, 2017) on the effectiveness of a “body fat loss” diet in obese women found that, beyond the scale, it appears the healthier diet for these women actually resulted in a more balanced gut microbiome. In other words, the reason why a “clean eating” diet may work is because it is supporting a healthier gut overall. If this is the case, consider the possibilities when you focus more intently on healing and restoring your gut health (as opposed to restrictive eating)? Oh the possibilities!

And an interesting report, published in the International Journal of Obesity (Sharkey, 2016), from a bariatric surgery doctor highlights this finding as well—asserting that, for healthy body fat loss and energy balance, gut health is essential.

In short: You are ONLY as healthy as the trillions of gut bacteria that outnumber your cells at least 10 times.

Your gut health acts like a domino effect for ALL other systems in your body. When your gut is UNABLE to absorb and digest your nutrients appropriately, or it is rotting and fermenting bacteria inside, then your other body systems (including your brain, your hormones, your liver—detoxifying organ, and more) are UNABLE to be fed.

What happens when you are not “well fed”—or nourished? Health declines. Your hormones (and cortisol) get out of whack. You experience increased anxiety, the “need to binge” or mood imbalances (ie. “dieting sucks”). And nutrient deficiencies are more common. Unfortunately, gut issues impact upwards of 75-percent of all Americans—even if they don’t have gut symptoms” (like bloating, constipation, IBS, or loose stools). Other signs of “gut dysfunction” may be a slowed metabolism, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, allergies, low immunity, anxiety, skin breakouts or general fatigue and lack of energy.

On the contrary, what happens when you rid of any unwanted bacteria or undigested food hiding out in your gut? Inflammation lessens, your metabolism, cortisol levels and thyroid are supported…and your body is “free” to stop holding on to unwanted body fat.

The best way to find out if you have a gut issue?

Test, don’t guess. Consult with a practitioner skilled in digging deeper into gut health for a personalized approach. Some testing may include: SIBO testing, stool testing, hormone and food intolerance testing. In addition, metabolic, thyroid and hormone testing (such as the DUTCH test and functional blood work) may also be beneficial for addressing hormone or metabolic imbalances as well.

In my own practice with clients, I find that most of my clients who cannot “lose body fat” (no matter what) often have a gut or metabolic imbalance that is driving their “inability.”

Look to your gut (and your hormones)—inside.

Supplement Smart

The diet industry is saturated with formulas and magical pills to shed the body fat (ie. “fat burners”). However, most of these are ultimately clever marketing and ways to steal your dollars. (And many of these may also jack with your cortisol levels—ie. stress hormones—making your stress and body fat loss worse in the long run, not better).

The key supplements I recommend to almost anyone on a body fat loss plan are simple—

A quality probiotic + fermented foods

Apple Cider Vinegar—1 tbsp. in 2-4 ounces of water around meal times

Digestive Enzymes (optional) or helping break down food

That’s it for “essentials.”

After all, if you are NOT digesting your foods in the first place (through healthy gut support) then you’re going to continue missing the mark on nutrient balance for your health and hormones.

P.S.

Not all supplements are created equal. In fact, 95-percent of probiotics on shelves do not contain the probiotics they claim, or the quality of probiotics needed to compose a healthy gut microbiome.

A few faves include:

Megaspore Probiotic (order through a practitioner)

Floramyces by Designs for Health (Use code: LAURYNLAX to be able to order)

Primal Flora Probiotic

Garden of Life Primal Defense Ultra (if you don’t have SIBO—small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)

Fermented Foods (1-2 condiment sized servings daily)

Sauerkraut

Low-Sugar Kombucha

Kefir

Grass-fed Plain Yogurt

Beet Kvass

Fermented & Pickled Veggies

GET REAL

These 8 essential strategies could be the “game-changers” you’ve been running circles around—trying to figure out the “answers” to body fat loss success.

The BIGGEST GAMECHANGER of them all though?

One that comes from a heart—and gut—check…with yourself: Not making your goal SOLELY about fat loss.

Fat loss is a byproduct of something else you REALLY want. You want that FEELING of fat loss—feeling good in your own skin, feeling good when you fit into your favorite jeans, feeling confident in your work, social interactions or relationships.

Identify that FEELING that you think your body-fat loss will bring you, and begin feeding into goals and pursuits outside body fat loss measures or the scale itself in order to attain what it is your truly want.

In my own health journey, and the journey of HUNDREDS of clients I’ve worked with over the years, the BIGGEST GAMECHANGER for “getting the body you want” will come when you stop focusing so much on the scale or size, and instead make goals and set intentions around other “bigger” things in your life.

It’s not bad to want to lose body fat or “tone up,” but when our sole drive and focus is aimed at body fat loss alone, we will hit a roadblock because that “dangling carrot” will never be fully attained (there will always be someone better, fitter, prettier, leaner than us, or a standard of dieting or body type that we want to achieve).

Set goals for your personal development, your peace with yourself and food, healing your gut or hormones, stressing less, your relationships, your dreams, your spiritual walk, your passion and purpose you bring to this world, and the body fat loss (or other body and health goals) WILL follow (promise, promise).

Above all, it’s vital to remember that, contrary to popular belief…We actually need some body fat for health and function.

In other words: Body fat alone is not necessarily the big bad scary enemy we’ve made it out to be.

Body fat tissue (“essential fat”)…

Keeps our organs, brain, and heart working

Provides insulation for body temperature regulation

Protects our organs

Gives us extra energy to expand in our active lifestyle

Supports healthy hormone balance.

Most women need about 20 to 28 percent body fat and men somewhere between 10 to 18 percent for general health (particularly hormone health).

That said, there is no one-size-fits-all body type for men and women and within the context of other health markers (ie. your menstruation cycle, your gut health, presentation of other diseases), your body will thrive when you make peace with the process of self-care.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Body fat loss is not rocket science.

Address the roots of underlying imbalances.

Eat and nourish yourself consistently with energy-giving, nutrient-dense whole foods.

Aim to stress less.

And pick a bigger goal outside your body size itself (the body will follow your heart and your gut intuition).

How to Lose Body Fat Naturally: 8 Strategies Your Trainer Won’t Tell You via drlaurynlax.wordpress.com/

Lisette actually had a bit of the old diva dog in her this week. She even enjoyed posing for me for the first time since December.

14.5 yr. old Lisette has had a surge of energy this week. She was half down for the count after bloating in Jan. And having a cyst on her rump burst and leave a large gaping wound that would not heal. Many vet visits later, little progress, until one vet pushed us hard to do a blood test. She thought it might help us make a decision what to do. . . Ah, the journey of life with a senior dog. Miraculously, the blood tests came back relatively healthy, just a little anemic. I decided to start cooking and feeding her chicken livers, and now she is bouncing back a little. She's gained a pound, and has a spring in her step again, and more wags in her tail.

There are still problems. Mild incontinence, and now the side effects of Proin and hormones are intolerable for her. We're trying an herbal mixture called bladder control. (I'm open to your suggestions about other treatments for incontinence - she is an older spayed female. And also ideas about what might help her gain weight.) Her wound has partially healed, but still has a way to go. She is still a skeleton, but has had a good appetite all along. She is very happy to be with us. Perhaps we have a bit more time. We are blessed to have each other.

Tummy Trimm™ is a powerful combination of fruit and vegetable enzymes with four strains of live cultured friendly bacteria, doubled-coated to survive stomach acid. This product was designed, in collaboration with the Cheng Kung National University in Taiwan, to loosen deep seated encrustation in the colon and eliminate it from the body.

Double-coated Friendly Bacteria

Double-coating is a new breakthrough technology that protects friendly bacteria from harsh gastric juice and bile acid as it journeys to the intestines to do its job. Without protection, most friendly bacteria is destroyed before it reaches the intestines.

Symptoms of accumulated encrustation

Frequent tiredness, frequent headaches, insomnia, poor sleep quality, pigmentation, blotchy or dull complexion, dark under-eye circles, body odour, bad breath, water retention, weight gain, bulging belly, indigestion, bloating, constipation, flatulence and excessive gas, lower back pain, fuzzy memory, inability to concentrate, muscular aches, food allergies and skin conditions like rashes, eczema, allergy, boils and acne.

I like to avoid wheat as often as possible. Wheat (especially white flour from hybrid, monoculture grains) is the new meat... as in, I think we eat way too much of it. I am try to use a wide variety of organic ground grains, quinoa, millet, amaryth, buckwheat, brown rice, for example. As I am baking more without wheat, I am noticing I do not miss it, nor the chronic bloating/energy lag I feel after eating it. I don't have the equipment to grind my own grains yet, but that is the plan eventually. For now, I order in bulk from natural food suppliers and store in a cool, dark place. I am also trying to drastically reduce the amount of white sugar we consume, experimenting with honey, agave nectar, maple syrup and more.

Here's a recipe for blackberry upside-down cake that I altered into a gluten-free version, and the kids and I all LOVED it, with a small dollop of vanilla yogurt on the side (but it sure didn't need it!).

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups fresh blackberries (12 ounces)

1/2 cup plus 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar

1 cup brown rice flour (you can use regular All-Purpose flour if you like)

1 tsp. xanthan gum (omit if using AP flour)

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 cup well-shaken buttermilk (I used soy milk and it was great, but you could use milk with 1/2 tsp. of vinegar if you don't have butter milk on hand)

Preheat oven to 400°F.

Butter an 8 inch round cake pan.

Dump blackberries in 1 layer in cake pan. Sprinkle berries with 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar.

Whisk together 1 cup rice flour, 1 tsp. xanthan gum, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. Beat together butter and remaining 1/2 cup sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer at high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add egg and vanilla and mix at low speed until just incorporated. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk, mixing at low speed until just incorporated.

Spoon batter evenly over berries, smoothing top, and bake in middle of oven until top is golden and a tester comes out clean, about 25 minutes.

Run a thin knife around edge of pan, then invert a large plate over pan and, using pot holders to hold plate and pan together tightly, flip cake onto plate.

Serve warm or cold. SO GOOD.

Food Safety News

Chobani yogurt cups marked with code 16-012 and best buy dates of Sept. 11, 2013 to Oct. 7, 2013 have been recalled after consumers reported swelling and bloating in certain containers.

U.S. yogurt-maker Chobani on Thursday said it is officially recalling certain cups of its Greek yogurt because they may be contaminated with mold, nearly a week after consumer complaints of illness sparked a quiet market withdrawal.

Chobani products marked with the code 16-012 and best-buy dates of Sept. 11, 2013 to Oct. 7, 2013 are affected by the voluntary recall. Federal Food and Drug Administration officials are working with the company to remove products from national retail sale, said spokeswoman Tamara Ward.

Officials with the Twin Falls, Idaho, firm did not identify the type of mold detected in the products, only saying that it is a kind typically found in a dairy environment. They said they were launching the recall because of "reports of product bloating and swelling and some claims of illness."

The recall includes all flavors Chobani of 3.5-ounce and 6-ounce cups and 16-ounce and 32-ounce tubs. It also includes all flavors of Chobani Bite and Chobani Champions 3.5-ounce cups, all flavors of Chobani Flip 5.3-ounce containers and all flavors of Chobani Champions 2.25-ounce tubes in eight, 16 and 36 count packages.

For a complete list of products, see the FDA's recall notice.

"While this type of mold is unlikely to have ill health effects, due to some claims of illness the company has decided to go from voluntarily withdrawing to voluntarily recalling the limited amount of potentially affected product," company officials wrote on the firm's Facebook page.

Consumers had posted complaints about foul-smelling yogurt or bubbling containers on the Chobani Facebook page and sent complaints to Food Safety News, a consumer website that first reported the withdrawal. The company started quietly pulling yogurt from retail shelves several days ago.

Customers who bought the product should discard it and contact the company to coordinate replacements or refunds at www.chobani.com/care. Or call 877-847-6181.

The Globalization of the American Psyche

This book from 2010 addresses cross cultural interventions on the part of the Western mental health industry in four chapters—one for each of four psychological diseases. Anorexia, PTSD, Schizophrenia and Depression.

In the first we learn that anorexia was very rare in Hong Kong, but when found had a very different presentation on the part of the patients. We all know the classic Western narrative of the anorexic patient seeing herself as needing to lose weight to fit into an idealized body image of beauty. But the Chinese girls did not have such underlying fat phobia nor even an ideal of beauty; their complaint was that they just didn’t have an appetite due to stomach ache and bloating or pressure on the esophagus. And since the Chinese do not separate the mind and body in the Cartesian way such complaints were just as significant as anxiety and depression. The triggering events were as simple as having their parents deny their request to go on a much looked forward to school trip.

What we are also able to learn from the anorexia chapter is the power of the West to sell its narrative through the DSM and articles in medical journals. This “script” of these diseases then starts to appear to explain what happens on a local level in Western terms for what is a different presentation and cause altogether. Journalists looking for answers from the West distract from what might be an entirely different underlying cause. But because of media attention anorexia began to show up in much greater numbers in Hong Kong mimicking the Western script.

And looking back at an account of anorexia in Europe in the 1800s the condition was a symptom of hysteria which was then written up by doctors who in turn shaped the symptoms with their pronouncement of them as part of the disease script. Thus veneration of the disease encourages imitation. And recognizable mental health diseases were a sanctioned way to communicate distress especially for girls and women who had so little power otherwise.

The author also notes that in times of uncertainty, political and economic hardship as Hong Kong was experiencing post Tianamen Square and reunification, the population is vulnerable to being impacted by mental health issues and infiltration of such new narratives of diseases.

Next up the PTSD chapter makes therapists look like ambulance chasers as they pour into countries after a natural disaster and fight with each other to help the survivors with their PTSD assuming that they will suffer the malady as it is known in the West and teaching the local authorities to expect a tsunami of PTSD symptoms in their populations. When none seemed apparent and the refugee camps were abandoned they became even more alarmed at this “denial” among the population of their “trauma”.

Most of the savior therapists did not even speak the language or know the first thing about the culture. And there were so many of them that their very presence created more chaos. They also trained locals to intercept PTSD using complex psychological concepts that were poorly translated by tour guides. On top of which came the trauma researchers with their surveys full of leading questions. To answer such surveys implied to the locals that financial or material aid might be offered if the questions were answered in the positive. The author concludes that the reason for such gold rush behavior was to seek a lab for all the various theories and treatments of PTSD.

Luckily for the reader a more sensitive local doctor in Sri Lanka shares his observations so we may know there are different ways a culture heals. His patients did not express psychological distress but logged bodily pain. And their ability to recover rested on being able to rejoin their social network. So the trauma was externalized to the body and the social realm rather than internalized on a psychological level. And it was not anxiety and depression that interfered with their ability to function as in Western PTSD. It was their inability to take up their old roles in their social network that caused the stress.

Even in Western history the symptoms of PTSD has changed over time and what we know today as PTSD was originally devised specifically for Vietnam war vets to help them deal with fighting an unfavorable war.

The chapter on schizophrenia is illuminating in the way a family in Zanzibar treats the designated patient which is to not be too attached to the idea of them being a patient whose delusions are an incorrect assessment of reality. They just treat them and integrate them as a normal person and don’t react too much when there is a psychotic episode. The patient is just told not to overextend themselves and go to their room to rest when so stressed. This resulted in fewer episodes and longer periods of remission than a patient in the West who is constantly watched and monitored—the very treatment likely to trigger delusions of being watched and monitored.

The chapter on depression is the most insidious of all as the entire pharmaceutical industry puts their heads together to market the disease to the Japanese through conferences with local doctors, coopting the idealized cultural status of sadness and articles fed to the press when incidents of suicide were reported. And while those involved were sincere about the ability of SSRI drugs being able to help, the author makes sure we know the nuances of the studies and how they are largely financed by the drug companies who routinely suppress unfavorable results (now made more public through various lawsuits especially involving teens). And his accounts of the economic downturn on the culture is duly explained to show that there is cause for citizens to blame themselves and attempt to compensate by overworking. This chapter illustrates the disaster capitalism of the mental health industry.

In our hyperindividualism and hyperinternaliztion here in the West such diagnosis has a ready appetite while the pathologizing of social problems into a personal psychological one conveniently takes the focus off actual social problems.

This is all enraging stuff, but what I took away from the book was how easily we are impacted by the pervasive, eagerness of the mental health industry to pin down almost any randomly unpleasant human condition and organize it into a set of symptoms which are then neatly categorized and labeled for entry into the DSM, the social registry of the various temperaments of the mind and its manifestations. Then there is the ritual diagnosis by a medical practitioner—the debutante ball to introduce the patient in all their symptomatic glory. They are then expected to meet their suitor and attain normalcy by accepting some form or other of prescribed treatments. This creates a society that glorifies one’s discontent by crowning an array of symptoms with an important science sounding label. It’s a material world and we want our drugs.

The author predicts that the next recently discussed diagnosis that will be offered is PTED Post-traumatic Embitterment Disorder to help people cope with the disorientation of globalization and urges the West not to be part of the problem.

Mental health is a narrative embodied in culture and different cultures have their own ways of dealing with mental health conditions. And given that our culture is not doing so great in terms of social and psychological issues we might think twice about exporting our problems and teaching them as a belief system to others who have entirely different belief systems. This is the message the author leaves us with in a short concluding chapter that is worth the price of admission.

We thought the beans had escaped the aphids, then I saw the ants. When you see ants on bean plants you can be pretty sure the aphids aren't far because they'll be being 'milked' for their honeydew excretion - a nice example of symbiosis. Honeybees do the same with the aphids sucking the sap of pine trees bu they at least make honey with

the aphid excretion ;-)

An amazing sight to see the aphids bloating themselves on bean sap with their bums in the air and ants walking over them collecting the honeydew. I think the ant is Formica sp. but not sure...

Are you a man?

Does the Pope wear a funny hat?

Do you like beer?

If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions you might need to read the following excerpt from our other excerpt that grew too large to be considered an excerpt... 'Everything I Know About Women I Learned the Hard Way' it's called 'A MAN'S GUIDE TO 'FEELINGS.'

A MAN'S GUIDE TO FEELINGS

Webster's Dictionary defines 'feelings' this way:

'1a (1) : the one of the basic physical senses of which the skin contains the chief end organs and of which the sensations of touch and temperature are characteristic : touch (2) : a sensation experienced through this sense b : generalized bodily consciousness or sensation c : appreciative or responsive awareness or recognition

2a : an emotional state or reaction b plural : susceptibility to impression : sensitivity

3a : the undifferentiated background of one's awareness considered apart from any identifiable sensation, perception, or thought b : the overall quality of one's awareness c : conscious recognition : sense

4a : often unreasoned opinion or belief : sentiment b : presentiment

5: capacity to respond emotionally especially with the higher emotions

6: the character ascribed to something : atmosphere

7a : the quality of a work of art that conveys the emotion of the artist b : sympathetic aesthetic response

Examples of FEELING:

I noticed tingling feelings in my fingers.

She had a queasy feeling in her stomach.

I had the feeling of something crawling across my foot.

We enjoyed the feeling of walking barefoot in the sand.

He had no feeling in his right leg.

He's been troubled by feelings of guilt.

There's no point in trying to hide your feelings.

He spoke with feeling about the injustice he had seen.

Have you no feeling for the plight of the homeless?

I can see that you have strong feelings about this subject.

First Known Use of FEELING:

12th century.'

You'll never get the twenty six minutes of your life back that it took you to read that definition that was cut and pasted directly from Webster's Online Dictionary.

If there was a 'Viewminder's Online Dictionary' the definition of 'feelings' would go kind of like this...

'Feelings:

'A weapon used against men by women whenever women seek the 'upper hand' in any situation.

A magical glittery 'trump card' from the land of puffy clouds, unicorns, rainbows and sparkles that takes whatever a woman says and makes it not only 'right' but absolutely unassailable, impervious to the application of all reason, logic, contrary factual evidence and deduction.'

First Use: The Garden of Friggin' Eden.'

Example:

Eve: 'Hey Adam... I feel that you should eat this apple.'

Adam: 'But Eve... God said NEVER to eat the fruit of that tree!'

Eve: 'Did you not hear what I said before I said 'that you should eat this apple'... I said that 'I FEEL that you should eat this apple?'

Adam: 'OMG this is delicious! If God was all loving and caring why would he create such a delicious fruit and then waive it in front of us with all his prohibitions like it was some kind of test of our loyalty and... yo Eve... you know what I 'feel' like? I feel like some hot freaky tonight baby.'

Eve: 'Shut up Adam... everyone knows men don't have 'feelings.' Feelings only work for women. You're such a moron and you never take me or anything else seriously. It's like God made you as some kind of a joke or something... along with that thing he called a 'platypus.'

Adam: So does this mean you 'feel' like rockin' The Garden widda little hot freaky tonight or what?'

Eve: Gives Adam history's first 'PLOD'... Putrid Look of Disgust.

Snake: (Played by the Legendary Leon Haywood) crawls by humming 'I wanna do someting freaky to you baby.'

Guys... you will never understand 'feelings.'

The best you can do is identify them... try to cope with them... and flee from them at the first sign of their very existence.

Which is usually when your girl is telling you that she has one (or more if you're particularly unlucky.)

Feelings are absolutely absurd.

I should say 'I feel that feelings are absolutely absurd.'

Saying it that way protects me from being judged, criticized or challenged in any way and it keeps me from ever having my position held up to the critical light of reality where flaws in my thinking could be exposed and possibly even ridiculed.

Let's look at it from the male perspective.

Which is the only perspective you will ever understand.

I know it's the wrong way to look at it but it's more entertaining so just go with me.

I am so used to being wrong it isn't even funny.

Here's an example of a conversation between you and your buddy.

Of course it takes place at a bar and of course alcohol is involved.

I said it was from the 'male perspective' right?

That means its some dive ass bar that smells like... some dive ass bar on a Tuesday night.

Because most of the time alcohol is the only way to get you to open up and even think about 'feelings.'

The conversation goes something like this:

Guy: 'The President Sucks.'

Other Guy: 'Why does the President suck?'

Guy: 'Because he did this, this, this and that.'

Other Guy: 'That is a very well thought out argument, highly persuesive, filled with reason and applied deduction and empirical evidence even.'

Third Guy: 'Check her out.'

Other Guy: 'I accept your position and I accept that indeed the President sucks.'

That's cut and dry, black and white, a tenable position made rock solid by the application of reason and evidence to come to a logical understanding with your buddy.

You done good.

Now if the bartender would only see you dying of thirst and get you another beer.

How hard can it be for her to look at your wide eyes, your forward leaning posture, the money you are waving at her and the crusty white shit on your cracked parched lips that indicates you want another beer?

Now let's try that at home.

Not that... only men who have mastered the 'Real Secret' get to do that... I'm talking about the example of the discussion you and your buddy just had.

First off... your girl ain't your buddy.

Because she has feelings.

By now we've come to the understanding that 'women aren't the enemy.'

Feelings are.

And the 'Lifetime Network.'

And anything Oprah says.

Don't ever forget that.

You'll never understand them.

And if your woman ever says anything about how she 'feels about Oprah on the Lifestyle Network' say that stupind thing you gotta say and then just duck...

because the lobe's gonna blow!

But don't ever forget what makes men 'different' from women... besides that five percent of the body and their love of paint color sample chips... and the fact that they used to brush the hair and actually talk to little plastic ponies in freakishly human tones... it's 'feelings' that make women different nimrod.

In their minds they feel that's what makes them superior.

Let's try that conversation on your woman now.

Guy: 'The President Sucks.'

Girl: 'Well I feel like he's a good President.'

Guy: 'Baby I'm Sorry You Were Right.'

Of course instead of the 'BISYWaR' response that should become reflexive every time your woman says the word 'feel' or 'feelings' you'll say something stupid.

That's what you do.

Maybe that's why God made man.

To amuse himself watching the stupid shit that you do.

Just think of Charlton Heston having the biggest laugh right now with the reverb turned all the way up while he's floating on a cloud in a comfortable looking white robe and pointing at you.

And hope he doesn't accidentally turn the lightning on when he's havin' a laugh attack after watching you screw everything up.

How does that 'feel' braniac?

Gentlemen you must accept that all of the logic, deductive skills in the world, reason, evidence, and expert opinion are NOTHING and in fact ENTIRELY WORTHLESS when it comes to dealing with 'feelings.'

If you wanna get some hot freaky... and you know you do... you're gonna hafta learn to understand, cope and deal with feelings.

It's inevitable without the skillful application of Oscar caliber acting skills and adding alcohol to the pursuit.

Which we've also come to identify as an inappropriate long term relationship strategy.

Remember when you were a kid and your parents got sick of your shit and the conversation ended with 'because I said so.'

That's what feelings are.

They're like the 'be all end all'

The female equivelent of 'shut the fuck up.'

'Feelings' are something a woman pulls out of her delightfully embroidered 'tool bag' when she wants to take whatever it is that she just said... or is about to say and make it, in her mind... and yours... what would in reality be a 'universal truth' in your shared 'reality' together.

Of course if there's one thing you know, it's that there's 'reality' and then there's 'her reality' and then there's your shared reality which consists of you pretending to accept and support her psychotic and twisted vision of 'reality' in order to bring happiness and sunshine to the woman that you love and cherish and that is your beloved partner on the quest for the ultimate hot freaky experience.

Just keep that to yourself dumbshit.

That little factoid will never bring you closer to your ultimate goal.

Here's an example... we've all heard it said that 'that which goes up must come down.'

You probably haven't really put much thought into that statement and there's really no way to debate its beautiful simplicity.

It's a fundamental truth.

Let's just say your woman thinks otherwise.

And she wants you to think that way too.

Because if there's one thing she wants as much as you want hot freaky it's to get you to think like her.

And she wants to do it without having to go through the effort prove her point, support her position with evidence of any kind of merit whatsoever or take any shit from you.

You see how chicks can be as lazy as guys?

She's going to say 'I FEEL that what goes up doesn't have to come down.'

Her application of the word 'feel' to the statement above means ultimately, in at least all of your relationship to her and your quest for some hot freaky therein, that what she just said must now be respected and accepted as what would be in reality one of those 'universal truths.'

Of course your dumb guy brain, even on its best day will try to say something like 'baby... according to the laws of physics you are clearly mistaken.'

She's your girl... you love her... you want to show her that she's mistaken because you care.

In your stupid guy way you relish the opportunity to impress her with your intellect and look smart.

You might not remember too much from college but you're absolutely certain that 'that which goes up must come down.'

You've gotta lotta life experience to prove it dontcha?

You're willing to talk about this in a non threatening, non judgemental, loving and supportive way aren't you big guy?

She will then clarify the audacity of your 'fucking unbelievable' response in the following way:

'are you saying that I am wrong?'

I swear only you could go from teachin' Honey Baby Poopie Pie a lesson on physics to 'personally attacking her' in one sixtieth of a billisecond.

Your relationship is more volatile than pennystocks on a Friday right before a three day weekend after everyone's had a three martini lunch.

She has been the judge, the jury and the executioner every time you mess up... she's seen you screw up so many ways... so many times... in so many circumstances...

yet you still genuinely shock her with your idiocy.

By this time she forgot what she'd even said after the two words she first uttered 'I feel.'

Because of your utter and contemptuous insolence for her.

You know how it goes.

Right now you realize that you've done it again.

You ask yourself 'will I ever fucking learn?'

Probably not.

You're doomed.

You're never gonna make it.

But I'm not gonna give up on you brother.

Although I'm starting to doubt you could ever get to the land called 'Shangri-freaky-la' even If I could carry your fatass there on my back.

In addition to being a fool and always falling into the oldest woman trap in the world... asking a chick 'baby what's wrong' you're pretty adept at falling into the second oldest woman trap in the world too.

Feelings.

It's taken women eons to work out and finess these traps to insure that they always work.

They're handed down from generation to generation of women and improved upon as more effectively vicious and cruel methods are discovered.

They've been honed to 'razor sharpness' on all those trips to bathroom that they've taken together.

And you think you're gonna be the first guy to 'beat them?'

You can't 'beat them.'

They are unbeatable.

The best you can do is to avoid them.

She probably wanted to blow her stack any way.

Maybe the pressure was building up in that extra lobe of hers and causing her a discomfort like a bloating of the brain.

And she's come to you for relief.

Because she knew she could count on you... without fail... to fall into the trap that would allow her animal woman to release the contents of the lobe and become comfortable again... maybe go hang out at the Sherwyn Williams store or something and think about paint.

You dumbfuck.

Here's a 'universal truth' for you...

if a woman 'feels' something it cannot be wrong.

Women's feelings are never wrong.

How dare you even think for a second that she was wrong.

This isn't about the laws of physics.

She doesn't even remember what it's about besides you telling her that there was a possibility that her feelings could be wrong in a loving an supportive non judgemental way of course.

Do you not remember what happened after you bitched about her buying the deluxe urn for Punkin?

Do you just like that shit going down?

You like that more than hot freaky?

It seems like it.

You didn't sell your soul, give up your free will, all of your computer passwords, burn all of your shit in a giant pile and throw away all of your male friendships to teach your girl about the laws of physics did you?

A woman's feelings can NEVER be wrong.

No man in history has ever succeeded in getting a woman to admit that what she 'felt' was wrong.

You are not going to be the first.

Go back to Webster's definition and look at the time 'feelings'was first used as a word.

The twelfth century.

Medieval times.

When not so coincidentally the first evidence of the Christian concept of 'purgatory' was found.

A lot of things and concepts were invented in the twelfth century.

You know... torture... the plague... big titties in tight velvet bodices... dungeons... gunpowder, canons, bombs, the Iron Maiden, black death... cholera... feelings...

Medieval times.

You don't want to be dealing with anything from the twelfth century.

Shit was all bad and evil and wicked back then.

Except the tight velvet bodices.

That's the only thing that got mankind through the twelfth century.

That's where 'feelings' come from.

A freakin' twelfth century idea come to torture your ass in modern times buddy.

And you're about to get some medeival shit for even thinkin' that you might have had what it takes to become the first guy in all history to prove to a woman that her 'feelings' are wrong.

Welcome to the twelfth century brother.

While men had just invented the magnetic compass in the twelfth century... a device with a floating needle that always pointed to north... a tool that they thought would make 'asking for directions' a thing of the past...

women were in the beginning stages of designing another sort of compass.

A compass called 'feelings.'

And that compass always points to 'right' Asshole.

And you and me both know that that 'compass' will certainly never point to you.

The stars are rather poor, with coma and bloating, but I was pleased with the spiral structure of the galaxy.

Introduced, warm-season, short-lived perennial, low-growing legume with slender stolons. Leaves mostly have 3 leaflets (occasionally 4-5), which are very variable in shape and size. New growth can be hairy, but older growth tends to be hairless. Flowerheads consist of 8-25 dense clusters of yellow pea-like flowers borne on the end of long unbranched stalks. Pods are small (8-12 mm long), hairy and straight to slightly curved. Flowering is in spring and late summer. A native of South Africa, it is sown and naturalized especially in the Clarence Valley. Suited to well-drained lighter soils, but needs bare ground to establish. It is tolerant of acidity, low fertility and frost. The only variety used in NSW is Miles. Seed costs are high and it is difficult to establish due to its very small seed and slow seedling growth. Usually outcompeted by low-growing mat grasses. Capable of reasonable cool-season growth, persists on poorer lighter soils and is non-bloating. Manage with light to no grazing during the main flowering period of spring. This practice aims to produce seed for future plant recruitment and enhances spring establishment of seedlings. Subject pasture to heavy short duration grazing

during summer. Apply moderate to heavy grazing during late summer-autumn to reduce competition and leaf disease prevalence.

POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS

ADHESIONS - ABDOMINAL

Scar tissue formation is part of the natural healing process for all body tissues. In most people, scar tissue doesn't cause any problems. Adhesions however, are abnormal bands of scar tissue that take month or years to form. Abdominal adhesions often occur after abdominal surgery. They become attached to the abdominal wall and internal organs, and can cause pain. They can block the intestines, leading to an obstruction. Such adhesions may need surgical removal.

ARTERY INJURY - COMMON ILIAC

The common iliac artery in the lower abdomen supplies blood to the pelvis and leg on that side. Injury to the artery is uncommon, is usually obvious, and is repaired immediately.

ARTERY PERFORATION

Arteries are large blood vessels that can carry blood under pressure throughout the body. Your doctor will be very careful to avoid injuring arteries near your operation site. An artery perforation can result in significant bleeding and blood loss. This is very uncommon. If an artery is perforated, the artery can usually be repaired and the lost blood can be replaced by a blood transfusion. A specialist vascular surgeon is often asked to repair arteries. Late consequences of artery injury include fistula, hemorrhage, pseudo-aneurysm, thrombosis and emboli.

ARTERY THROMBOSIS

Arteries are large blood vessels that carry blood throughout the body. Sometimes they need to be moved to the side or compressed to allow access to the operation site. This pressure can lead to a clot forming within the artery, a process known as thrombosis. This is most likely in older patients with pre-existing blood vessel disease. A large clot can block the artery, while a small clot can dislodge, becoming an embolus, which travels and eventually blocks a small artery. Blocked arteries lead to insufficient blood flow, or ischemia in the tissues supplied by the artery. This can cause damage to these tissues, which may be permanent, depending on the duration of the blockage. Ischemia in the brain can cause a stroke. In the spinal cord it can cause paralysis and altered sensation. In the legs, it can cause pain and gangrene.

DEATH

No surgeon can guarantee a risk-free operation. All operations have some risks. Some risks are minor inconveniences, while some are major disabilities. The risks increase with repeat operations on the same area of your body. Your entire medical staff will do their best to eliminate all risks to you, before, during and after your surgery. However sometimes, even after the surgery goes well, serious problems can arise that can result in death. These include pneumonia, pulmonary emboli, heart attack and stroke. You should discuss these risks with your Surgeon and your Anesthesiologist.

GASTROINTESTINAL PERFORATION

The intestines are adjacent to the surgical site, and must be moved to obtain access during surgery. Your surgeon will be careful to avoid perforating the intestine. Perforations are difficult to detect, but can be repaired. If not detected, they can lead to serious infection after a few days with pain, fever and bloating. An unseen perforation may need another operation to clean and seal the perforation.

HEMATOMA

During any surgery, some blood vessels will be cut. Your surgeon will stop all significant bleeding before suturing the wound shut. Sometimes bleeding recommences after the operation, forming a collection of blood in the tissues, called a hematoma. The hematoma can cause pain, pressure on adjacent tissues or become infected. It may need to be removed by inserting a drainage tube or performing a surgical operation.

HEMORRHAGE

During surgery, blood vessels must be cut to access the desired location in your spine. Your surgeon will plan the surgical route to avoid large blood vessels, and will ensure bleeding has stopped before finishing the operation. Sometimes, one of these cut blood vessels begins re-bleeding after the operation. If the amount or location of the bleeding is causing you a problem, your surgeon may need to perform a further procedure to stop the bleeding and remove the accumulated blood. demonstrative evidence videos

How To Relieve Bloating in 4 Easy ways ift.tt/19ZnDKf Bloating can really put a sour note on your day. You don't feel good, your clothes don't fit right and the side effects can be a little embarrassing. However, there are some things you can do to ease the discomfort you feel while bloated. First, it's important to understand where bloating stems from so you can alter your habits accordingly. If bloating still occurs, there are some easy tips and tricks you can follow in order to reduce your symptoms. How To Relieve Bloating - COMMON CAUSES OF BLOATING Bloating can be caused by a wide variety of factors. In some cases, it's a medical condition or emotional state that you can't help. In other situations, it could be from the foods you're eating. Here's a list of the top causes of bloating to help you understand where this condition stems from: Acute conditions: Problems in the gastrointestinal area, like an infection or blockage, may also lead to bloating. Premenstrual syndrome: Many women experience bloating during PMS due to increased water retention. Smoking: The increased air intake that occurs while smoking cigarettes can lead to bloating. Stress: Hormonal changes due to stress may cause some bloating. Also, stress can sometimes lead to poor digestion which can also lead to bloating. Poor food choices: Some foods are more likely to lead to gas and bloating. Eating healthy is not a sure-fire fix since even some healthy foods can cause bloating. 4 TIPS FOR REDUCING BLOATING How To Relieve Bloating - Avoid belly-bloating foods You should either avoid these foods altogether or eat them in limited amounts: Excess carbohydrates: Eating too many carbs can lead to unnecessary water retention, which leads to bloating. Raw veggies: Many veggies are known to cause gas when eaten raw, especially cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, peppers, onions and Brussels sprouts. Simply cook your veggies instead - the nutritional value is equal to that of raw veggies. Spicy foods: The spicier a meal is, the more stomach acid it will trigger, which leads to bloating and irritation. Fatty foods: Foods with a lot of fats, especially fried foods, cause bloating because they are digested very slowly. Pick foods with monounsaturated fatty acids instead, like walnuts, sunflower seeds and avocados. Salt: Avoid foods with too much salt, including processed foods, whenever possible. The sodium attracts water, which causes the body to retain fluids. Carbonated drinks: The air bubbles in caffeinated drinks like soda end up in your belly. Acidic drinks: Fruit juice, coffee and alcohol each have a high acid content which can cause swelling in the gastrointestinal tract. Chewing gum: You swallow air as you chew gum, which causes bloating. How To Relieve Bloating - Eat bloat-busting foods instead These are the top dietary changes you should make in order to prevent bloating: Fiber: Your digestive system will be much more efficient with enough fiber in your diet, which in turn decreases the likelihood of bloating. High-fiber foods include bran cereals, blueberries, peas and lentils. Carminative herbs: Herbs like peppermint, chamomile, fennel and ginger are all great for reducing gas. You can eat foods with these ingredients or drink them as a tea. Water: Despite the fact that bloating is often due to water retention, drinking more water helps to flush out the system and reduce bloating. How To Relieve Bloating - Change your habits There are a few simple changes you can make to your daily routine to prevent bloating before it happens: Exercise more: Even just a short, brisk walk each day can reduce bloating because the activity helps the digestive tract process gas more quickly. Eat slowly: When you eat too quickly or while talking, you're more likely to take in excess air, which can turn into a bloated belly. Slow down while you eat and always close your mouth while chewing. Don't use straws: Drinking with a straw can also cause excess air intake and bloating. Check your meds: Some prescriptions and supplements contain carbonate or bicarbonate, both of which can cause bloating. Ask your doctor about these side effects and how to prevent them. Belch more: Though it may seem a little crass, a few stealthy burps can help get rid of excess gas from your stomach. How To Relieve Bloating - Natural Remedies for Bloating Even with these lifestyle and dietary changes, you may still experience bloating once in a while. Here is our Number 1 recommended remedy for bloating BROWTOL Finally, if your bloating is severe or chronic, you should see a doctor as this could be a sign of a more serious condition. BLACK-FIGURE

I am in profile, calm in the glaze,

One bare foot forward, proffering you

A hare.

You are detached, absentminded, hand

Outstretched for the receiving; your chin

Is bare,

A matt silhouette, with features etched

Into a cool acceptance

Of my troth.

*

Unfreeze the frame: you fumbling youth,

The hare jerks free, by jinks

Eludes us both.

Source material: A common theme of Attic black and red figure vases is the giving of a hare as a love-token, sometimes by a man to a woman, but more often by a man to a youth. Eros himself is sometimes depicted with a hare, indicating that the hare is a symbol of amorous intent. Dead hares were also given to victorious Olympic athletes; perhaps they were not presented alive in order to avoid the embarrassment implied above. The verb “to jink” is applied to the hare when it switches direction when pursued.

Poem by Giles Watson, 2004.

ARTEMIS AND AGAMEMNON

You always were a braggart, Agamemnon,

And when Calchas, your crony, that divinatory

Pisser with the wind, saw two eagles,

One black, one with white barred tail,

He knew the words to feed your bloating ego:

“See how the bare-taloned birds

Strip the flesh of that dead hare,

And pluck the long-eared leverets,

Lank with foetal blood

From the womb ripped open

On the stone?

So shall you do, Agamemnon,

Unto Troy, devouring

All her little ones. The glory

Shall be yours, their blood bespatter

Your hammered mask

Of gold.”

You always were a braggart, Agamemnon,

And these eagles bear my curse, for killing

The creature of desire, my fecund hare,

And stealing her progeny unborn,

While still she quivers, and her flesh is warm.

Time shall be my avenger, Agamemnon,

For henceforth, hares shall be love-gifts

On the sherds of Attic vases, but your

Fair-bearded face will quiver like this mother,

When the gold mask is removed.

Source material: Aeschylus, Agamemnon, lines 104-139. Artemis, always opposed to the expedition against Troy, was enraged when two eagles devoured a pregnant hare, which the diviner Calchas interpreted as an omen of the victory of Agamemnon and Menelaus. When Schliemann excavated Mycaenae, he found a gold-masked body in one of the graves, and when he removed the mask, caught a glimpse of a fair bearded face before it crumbled into dust. He sent a telegram to the King of Greece, saying “I have gazed upon the face of Agamemnon.” Hares were regarded by the Greeks as symbols of fecundity, (see previous note on “Black-Figure”) and were often given as love gifts from men to women, or from older men to younger boys - this fact is attested by the large number of vase paintings depicting scenes of hare-giving. See John Layard, The Lady of the Hare, London, 1944, pp. 208 ff.

It may need to be removed by inserting a drainage tube or performing a surgical operation. courtroom art

March 2, 061/365- I love Breathsavers mints but today as I was looking for a maco shot (for Macro Monday of course) I noticed that they contain Neutrazin. Not sure if that should scare me or not so I did some research.

According to Wikipedia: Breathsavers is a brand of mint manufactured by the Hershey Company introduced in 1978. The mints are advertised as containing "Neutrazin", an ingredient claimed to neutralize bad breath. It is not stated which ingredients of the ingredient list comprise Neutrazin.

The main ingredient found in Breathsavers is sorbitol. It has been known to cause gas, stomach cramps, mild to severe diarrhea and several other side affects. It is not stated how much sorbitol is in a serving but doses as little as 10g have been found to cause diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain. It is not recommended to consume more than 3-4 mints in any short period of time.

Then I looked to Yahoo Answers, about the only web site with any info on what the heck neutrazin really is: "The composition, dubbed NeutraZin, has three active components: a zinc compound, an oil (liquid fat) and a nontoxic surfactant. Neutrazin is a harmless chemical that reacts with other molecules making them less offensive and odorless and increasing their weight so they literally fall out of the air. The fallen molecules evaporate without a trace, taking the odors with them."

Hmmmmmm?

In Ayurveda, a healthy digestive system is referred to as the mainstream of our well-being. The root cause of most of the diseases is inefficient digestion. The metabolic energy of digestion called ‘agni’ helps in eliminating the body wastes and toxins. It breaks down the dense physical matter into subtle energy, which the body needs to generate internal warmth as well as produce a clear mind.

Understanding the Digestive Process

To help you understand this process better, let’s think of our digestive system as a juicer, the body toxins as fruit waste, ‘agni’ as the juicer blades and energy as juice! If the juicer blades are weak, less juice is produced and there is more fruit waste left over.

Similarly, when this ‘agni’ (juicer blade) is weak, there is not enough digestive power to metabolize food into energy (juice), resulting in more toxins (fruit waste) getting accumulated in the cells. Thus, a stronger ‘agni’ (better juicer blades) is required for a good digestive system. An easy way to support this digestive ‘agni’ is through the power of Yoga!

How Does Yoga Improve Your Digestive System?

Yoga synchronizes exercises with the rhythmic breathing in the body. Breathing ushers life force into the body and cleanses it of toxic materials formed due to wrong diet, unhealthy lifestyle and accumulated stresses. It improves ‘agni’, creates body balance and longevity while rejuvenating the whole system.

Benefits of Yoga

• A light and supple body

• A body that is alert and active

• Strong bones and muscles

• Reduction of fat

• Increased physical strength

• Improved appetite

• Increased capability to cope with fatigue

Yoga poses to aide digestion

1. Trikonasana – Improves digestion stimulates appetite and alleviates constipation.

2. Paschimottanasana – Relieves digestive problems like constipation.

3. Pawanmuktasana – Improves gastrointestinal problems.

4. Ardha Matsyendrasana – Massages the abdominal organs, thus alleviating digestive problems.

5. Ustrasana – Stretches the stomach and intestines, alleviating constipation.

A good digestive system is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Physical ailments like constipation, stomach ache, ulcers, acnes, pimples and bloating can be kept at bay if one’s digestive system is in a good condition.

Here are some important tips and long-term remedies that will aid digestion:

• Avoid drinking water half an hour before and after the meal

• Avoid eating heavy meals at night and overeating as well

• Do not lie down immediately after having your meal

• Avoid eating junk food or oily food

• Consume fibrous food

• Avoid irregular food timings

• Be happy and stay away from a stressful lifestyle

• Practice yoga regularly

Skipping meals or popping antacid tablet are not advisable. While it is difficult to bring a radical change in our day-to-day lifestyle, certain measures can be adopted to rejuvenate the digestive system and strengthen it.

Yoga is a time-tested technique for effectively restoring the body to optimum condition – naturally, and without making any major alterations in lifestyle. Simply practicing these basic yoga postures which can relax your abdominal organs and following these simple habits can help improve the functioning of the digestive system and restore your system back to an optimum level!

ARTERY INJURY -- COMMON ILIAC

The common iliac artery in the lower abdomen supplies blood to the pelvis and leg on that side. Injury to the artery is uncommon, is usually obvious, and is repaired immediately.

So how can mint leaves enhance your health, and how is it possible to incorporate them into your normal daily diet? Below is what you need to know.

What Are Mint Leaves?

Mint leaves can refer to any herb in the Mentha genus, nevertheless, the term is most often used to associate to peppermint and spearmint, the two most common types of mint vegetable. Spearmint is a flower with a sweet taste that works well at many recipes while peppermint has a higher attentiveness of menthol, which documents for most of the medicinal uses of mint leaves.

Mint leaves are really functional and can be used to produce a soothing cup of tea or included in everything from salads to puddings. Plus, studies show that these different variations of the mint herb could have a number of beneficial effects on health, from boosting brain function to keeping hormone levels under control, offering you all the more reason to consider adding this powerful herb into your regular rotation.

Great things about Mint Leaves

Improve Our digestive health

May Reduce Cold Symptoms

Help Dental Hygiene

Boost Brain Function

Soothe Breastfeeding Pain

Decrease PCOS Symptoms

Decrease Stomach upset

1. Improve Digestive Wellbeing

Many people grab mints at the first indication of tummy troubles, and for a valid reason. Mint is well-known due to the stomach-soothing properties thanks to the occurrence of a compound in peppermint oil called menthol, which helps relax the muscles in the digestive: tract to provide alleviation.

Studies show that mint may be especially beneficial for folks with irritable colon syndrome (IBS), a condition that causes IBS symptoms like belly pain, costiveness, diarrhea, nausea, bloating and cramps. In fact, one double-blind, placebo-controlled study out of Italy gave people with IBS peppermint olive oil capsules for four several weeks and found that symptoms were slashed by seventy-five percent.

2. May Reduce Cold Symptoms

Flip over just about any otc cold or flu treatments and you’ll likely place “menthol” on the set of ingredients. Menthol is one of the primary ingredients in peppermint oil, and although there is inconsistent evidence about just how effective menthol may be at relieving congestion, several studies have found that it may help improve airflow to reduce frosty symptoms.

3. Help Dental Hygiene

Popping a few mints or a keep of mint-flavored gum is a well-known natural cure to freshen up bad breath, but are you aware that it could also help promote oral hygiene as well?

One of the key benefits associated with peppermint tea is it is powerful antimicrobial properties, which can help kill off bacteria to optimize common hygiene. Brew up a cup or two of peppermint tea using mint leaves, and pair it with proper oral cleanliness practices to keep your mouth healthy and fresh.

4. Boost Brain Function

Interestingly enough, some research shows that your mere smell of mint could be enough to increase brain power and improve cognitive function. One research published in the Worldwide Journal of Neuroscience, for example, showed that the aroma of peppermint was able to enhance storage and increase alertness. Likewise, another study published in the North American Record of Psychology also revealed that peppermint scent was effective at reducing low energy and anxiety while bettering alertness, thanks to their ability to stimulate the central nervous system.

5. Soothe Breastfeeding Pain

Broke, sore and painful hard nips are some of the most frequent side effects of breastfeeding a baby, most of that can be difficult to effectively soothe and treat. Some research shows that mint leaves may help relieve pain caused by breastfeeding by creating a decrease in these serious symptoms and side results when applied topically.

A study conducted by the Alzahra Teaching Hospital in Iran showed that making use of peppermint gel was significantly more effective than lanolin at protecting against nipple breaks in nursing mothers. One more study published in the International Breastfeeding Journal found that daily use of peppermint water could prevent nipple cracks, noting that ladies who used it regularly also reported less pain.

6. Reduce PCOS Symptoms

Some studies have found that mint tea benefits polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition in women that is seen as excess levels of male hormones. This is because it has anti-androgen effects, helping to reduce testosterone levels to keep hormone levels in balance.

One particular 2010 study published in Phytotherapy Research showed that drinking spearmint herbal tea was able to significantly decrease testosterone levels and improve subjective assessments of hirsutism, or irregular locks growth, in women. A great animal study also confirmed that drinking peppermint tea led to a lowering in testosterone in rodents compared to a control group, suggesting which it could be beneficial for people that have PCOS.

7. Decrease Stomach upset

Also known as fatigue, indigestion is described as an impaired digestive function, resulting in recurrent symptoms like heartburn, nausea, belching and belly pain. Analyses have found that peppermint oil speeds up the emptying of the abdomen, which could protect against indigestion to avoid symptoms. Working with peppermint oil as a treatment for indigestion has also been shown to be effective, in particular, when together with other ingredients like caraway oil.

The benefits of digestive enzymes are endless. But most importantly digestive enzymes help to get rid of bloating that prevents you from reaching your flat stomach goals.

Introduced, warm-season, annual or biennial, trailing and twining legume. Leaves have 3 large (7-15 cm long) rounded leaflets with short hairs on the underside. Flowerheads are racemes of white, blue or purple

pea-like flowers, which form curved, broad and flattened pods that are 4-5 cm long. Flowering is in summer and autumn. A native of Africa, it is sown as summer forage or as

a green manure crop. It is suited to well-drained soils with a pHCa more than 4.2; although it is tolerant of short periods of

flooding. Very sensitive to salinity. A non-bloating, high quality forage. Leaves are

highly palatable, but not the stems. Usually higher yielding, more tolerant of grazing and

has better root disease resistance than cowpeas. When used as a green manure crop it increases soil fertility and supplies good quantities of nitrogen. Up to 3 harvests are possible from annual types, but

they will not withstand heavy grazing of the stems. Rotationally graze for best production and persistence. Best regrowth is achieved if grazing is delayed until flowering and stock are removed as soon as the leafy portion of the plants has been

eaten and a framework of stems still remains.

I refused to completely give up on the autumn that already packed its bag and left for climates warmer than the St.Vrain Valley, taking with it our glorious season. The foliage is pretty crusty here with one left over Russian Olive. The bare row is the line of chokecherry bushes I never even got to this year; maybe next year. I was on a quest to shoot some windows shots to celebrate MurkySoft announcing Windows #8 and leaving us with a screwed and dangerous #7. What are the odds they fixed something instead of bloating an OS that only Atlas would shoulder? Are they resolved to never fix their crap OSes?

Again, there was a blank sky that was less than inspiring on this day. I found one more bold shot toward the creek and its spread of natural vegetation. This last autumn pass mostly consisted of keeping the foliage out of the frame but there was still a bold shot here. I am still not willing to let this autumn slip away and I made another pass the other day. I got a couple of shots of the foliage that was still deteriorating.

I am out here Broley, the Boulder County greenbelt investments in mosquito breeding. The bold sky is gone, the rippling water gone, the bold clouds gone, my favorite foliage, gone or brown and most cattails seeding the next year's supply. I shot few pictures and kept the sky out of the frame. The colorful autumn foliage remains in this sheltered location.
