Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village (www.flagstaffhill.com) is a maritime precinct overlooking the continually dangerous Lady Bay . It contains the still active lighthouses that have attempted to keep the Warrnambool harbour safe from the roaring southern oceans.
The growing trade through the opening of the western Victoria district created the need for coastal ports. Port Fairy and Portland had established in the early 1840’s and a steady trade began to flow. The settlers of the new town of Warrnambool were attracted by early reports of the potential of Lady Bay to become a trading port.
Trade began through a range of slowly improving piers and jetties. The dangers of the port some became more apparent and calls for improved safety through the installation of lights started and were finally listened to by the newly separate colony of Victoria .
The Lady Bay Lighthouse Complex was originally built in 1858-9 of basalt quarried on the Salt Water (Maribynong) River, Melbourne . The upper tower, chartroom, cottage and privy were originally located on Middle Island near the outlet of the Merri River , with a lower light located on a timber tower on the beach.
It soon became apparent that the middle island location was not satisfactory with the light obscured by heavy seas.
In 1871 the lights and all associated buildings, along with the privy, were moved to their current location on Flagstaff Hill as leading lights for the entry to the treacherous and shallow Warrnambool Harbour . The lower light was placed on a bluestone obelisk that had been erected there as a navigation marker in 1854.
A flagstaff had been erected on the hill as early as 1853 very soon after the settlement of the Warrnambool district.
Flagstaff Hill’s Lady Bay Lighthouse Complex is of historical, scientific (technological) and architectural significance to the State of Victoria by providing an excellent example of the kind of navigational aids constructed in the early years of regional expansion in Victoria. The lights remain today a maritime navigation aid.
The Lady Bay Lighthouse Complex historical significance is further enhanced for its intact battery and guns, a strong reminder of Victoria 's wealth and determination to protect itself from the perceived threat of invasion in the 1880s.
Flagstaff Hill was also the centre for the Warrnambool Garrison, built in response to the perceived threat of foreign forces looking to expand their own empires by taking this remote part of the mighty British Empire .
The remaining guns are scientifically (technologically) significant as physical reminders of a time when these weapons represented advanced design in artillery. A recent study has found two of the guns to be of "world significance" and further work is being undertaken to enhance the way we tell our guests of this significance.
The Lady Bay Lighthouse Complex is of architectural significance as a fine example of Public Works Department architecture of the 1850s and 1880s. The modest but dignified and sturdy lighthouse structures are indicative of the importance of lighthouses to the communities that relied upon them to facilitate safe passage for shipping, at a time when such transport was crucial to relatively isolated towns like Warrnambool.
The battery of two 80 pounder rifled, muzzle loading guns was added in 1887 as part of a general upgrade to the defences of Victoria which saw Port Phillip Bay transformed into a fortress and the nearby ports of Belfast (Port Fairy) and Portland receive a similar armament to Warrnambool. The fortifications and guns were in a derelict condition until they were restored after the complex was integrated into the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum in the 1970s.
The Warrnambool Garrison guns are fired by re-enactment groups on major event days at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village .
2009 marks the 150th year of these beautiful structures role in developing what is now the thriving City of Warrnambool . A range of activities and special events are planned across the year to mark this important milestone for our city.
The two lights are undergoing upgrades works in early 2009 to enhance their current role in marking the safe channel into what is now a recreational boating port.
Guests to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village can explore the Victorian State Heritage Registered Lady Bay lighthouse complex daily. The upper lighthouse can be climbed and is open daily.
The lighthouses are also able to be viewed through the flagstaffhill.com webcam located overlooking Lady Bay .
Purchased from my parents neighbors garage sale in 2006 --4 whimsical wine bottles, must be souvenirs, Made in France, 1971, each has a carved wood stopper with creepy blinking doll eye. Most accessories are removeable & metal.
No luck finding anything similar on the internet ( and they are not Anri related ). Have you seen anything like this over the years ? Any sites you can think of that could help me out ? Greatly appreciated :)

This Apache picture is only different from all the others I took because the navigation light is on! I was waiting fof a flight of three to launch and to pass the time tried to predict when the light would flash. I got it right on this one. It wasn't really worth the effort!

I did a presentation on how people scan web pages and quickly determine what's relevant - of course I needed to mention the book.
From my own experience at presentations I knew most people would just stare at what ever was on screen - so I decided to take Mr Gladwell's publicity photo animated, and loop it for that special frisson.

I first noticed this graffito several years ago, and I have taken several images during different seasons and with different lenses, but this is the first time I have ever seen the lights blinking, and it makes all the difference. Once again, someone keeps coming back to refresh the "smile" over the years!
Last year I was commissioned by a Swiss clothing store to take photos for a blinking eye button. This is the eye model with two right eyes...

A completely silly picture of Pauli with one of those blinking balls. I found this under the bottom shelf of the pantry when I was cleaning under there and she went crazy over it. I don't remember how long it's been missing, but Pauli was really glad to have it back.
Of course NOW I remember that what she does is get it slimy and then bring it back for me to throw it. And then get it stuck underneath some piece of furniture and obsess over it. Maybe I hid it in the pantry....

Hamburgers lit. Shakes blinks within the Hamburgers letters. The arrow was not blinking at this time. It was restored in 2009 to working condition.

My room mate and Ham Radio buddy of over 25 years, Dave, N7UWQ came up with that idea, although he powered his up off his trucks 12 volt system.
I had bought 300 Li-ion Motorola 'Razor' Cell Phone Batteries off eBay for $30.00 (yes, that's Three Hundred Batteries and Free Local Pickup for 10 cents each).
So for 40 cents, some solder and plenty of Hot Glue I powered my LED up. It is still blinking after 5 years and I'm sure batteries will take on a full charge when they do go low!
The Red LED when 'On' draws only a very slight .030 amps of current, the batteries in parallel provide 2.800 amps of power, hence the long life.

A transparent inner eyelid is called the nictating membrane. It protects the frog's eyes when the animal is underwater. :-)
If you've ever noticed a frog blinking when it eats, it's because it uses its eyeballs to swallow. It can't chew its food effectively, or use its tongue to push food down its throat, so instead it uses its eyes. The eyes sink down into the skull, pushing the food along..!! :-D

BACKSTORY: Clint did a lot of research to decide the exact car he wanted... Looked for the most reliable make (Toyota), then the most reliable model (Prius), then decided on a mileage/price range compromise (50-60Kish, $12-17Kish), then decided on the trim level (highest/Advanced Technology Package) and then started looking. It turned out that only about 15 or so that met the criteria would be on the entire national market at any given time. We drove to places in Maryland we'd never heard of. More than once. Finally, we found one at a BMW dealer in Maryland, so we decided to go check it out. But we didn't call ahead because he didn't want to tip our hand. When we got there, Clint asked them if they had any Priuses, and they said no. They told us to go to the Passport Toyota down the street. We went to the Passport Toyota and told them what car we were looking for, so they looked it up and found it at the BMW dealer. So we had to leave and come back the next day, because they had to move it from one dealer to the other. So we did get it for a good cost -- $12,500, but really it was $13,500 when all was said & done with taxes and processing. The list value for that car at that mileage was $14,500, so we were $2,000 under market rate.
The car is awesome. Clint gets 36-43mpg; has even made 50MPG from Sterling to Annandale. Radar Cruise Control is amazing. Clint didn't touch the accelerator or the brake the entire time back on the beltway. The parking assist is amazing. Clint parks with his hands behind his head to confuse people. He put remote start in it, an override module to allow navigation to be used while driving, some color-cycling lights, Toyota-logo door-light projectors, and a bunch of other stuff. ME AND DUDE'S MOST EXCELLENT ICEBOW ADVENTURE
We were stopped at the roadside, blinking and stunned by the strange beauty.
It was midday when we got into Haines Junction. I fell in love right there. I admit, it was the precious Canadian gasoline that got us hot for the place, but while Dude was having a fling with the pump I had time to take a breath and soak in the Extreme Scenic Beauty. The Yukon, for the hordes of you who live in ignorance of such knowledge, is gorgeous. Haines Junction sits at the intersection of the "Haines Road" (that would be the road that goes to Haines) and the Alcan. To the southwest is the Kluane Range which is a long row of bare three mile tall rocks that you will consider yourself blessed to have seen.
So after having improved both fuel state and food state, we got back on the road ... and a few miles later, I pointed to my left and exclaimed, "Dude, a sundog! Wow! Pull off here!" As a rule Dude hadn't let us stop for photo ops but he obliged while I took a couple of snapshots of a bright, tall sundog over the Jeep. It was cool, but not that cool you know. Dude got us moving again and then the Kluanes were fully revealed to the left of us, the sun dancing above and below a knife-sharp granite ridge, backlit snow swirling and streaming from the peaks, and there was this weird flavor to the ether in the Jeep that had us both expecting something, and then we both said holy sh--, holy f---, oh my god, Dude, stop the car, holy sh--, jesus christ wow oh my god wow and opened the doors and stood up in the cool breeze
And there we were, blinking and stunned.
