26001 - Prestonpans - 1005 - 25/07/86 (Un-identifed [Headcode / Departure time] loaded merry-go-round coal train from Blindwells Opencast Disposal Point to Leith Docks, which consisted of 29 individually numbered HAAs [some were possibly fitted with canopies to stop the dust blowing out of the wagons on the short journey, but I can't imagine the 26 managed a fast speed with over a 1,000 tonnes trailing[ loaded with Scottish opencast "Black Gold" for export via Leith Docks).

Having run 200 yards "wrong line" 56054 "British Steel Llanwern" runs into Prestonpans up loop. From here, the train will reverse under the road bridge, just visible on RHS, and into Cockenzie reception sidings.

56054 will then run round its train and then take it up through the coal discharge shed.

1S03, 0708 Leeds - Aberdeen LNER HST service, is seen passing Blindwells with a pair of unidentified power cars on the 6th November 2018 at 1007. The area to the left was the location for the loading bunker for the Blindwells opencast site which closed in 2000, and the site is now being developed. The plan is for more than 1500 homes, a school, business units and leisure centre. With new houses possibly being built in Longniddry, new houses here and in nearby Prestonpans, over 1400 in Wallyford and more near Musselburgh station it is going to be interesting times for the North Berwick services.

The water in the foreground is coming from the Coal Board water treatment plant nearby.

56094 is seen triple heading with 56096 and 56105 passed Blindwells with the 6S31 Doncaster to Millerhill on the 26th of June 2019.

Until early 2022, This but had the Service number on the Left with a different font which was the only one in the fleet to do so, but never really took of and has since been replaced with the normal ones.

When coal was king. 56054 brings a train of HAAs, just loaded with coal at Blindwells Opencast Coal plant (400 yards behind the train) across the crossover from the down ECML to the up line in order to access Prestonpans loop 200 yards in front of the loco. It would then propel the train into Cockenzie Power Station reception sidings.

The Blindwells site is now a rapidly expanding housing estate and the Power Station site is just bare. How times change.

One of my favourite photo locations which has long gone owing to tree growth. 56096 passes the Blindwells Coal Loading hopper whilst working the empty refuse containers from Oxwellmains to Powderhall.

On the outward leg as 5X71 Doncaster IEP Depot to Edinburgh, 800101 passes the former open cast site at Blindwells on 29 Jan 2018.

Class 26/0 No. 26007 is seen having just loaded its train of coal hoppers at Blindwells Opencast on 29th May 1990. It is quite possibly bound for the nearby Cockenzie power station which was an established flow at the time

Der Antrieb der V60 erfolgt mittels PU-Motor, bei Lego als "mittlerer Linearmotor" oder auch WeDo-Motor bezeichnet auf die Blindwelle und vor dort über die Koppelstange auf alle drei Radachsen. Für sicheren Vortrieb sorgt ein zusätzlicher Gewichtsstein. Schließlich handelt es sich beim umzusetzenden Vorbild um eine Lok mit erhöhter Dienstmasse (54t statt 48t), die ab 1968 als Baureihe 261 geführt wurde.

Das Getriebe ist so untersetzt, dass eine Höchstgeschwingkeit von umgerechnet 51 km/h erreicht wird. Das Vorbild erreicht 30 km/h im Rangiergang sowie 60 km/h im Streckengang. So ist ausgerüstet ist die V60 fast 3,5 mal stärker als die mit zwei Eisenbahn M Motoren ausgerüstete V100. Das sollte auch für einen langen, schweren Zug ausreichend sein.

Im Praxistest hat sich der Antrieb so leider nicht bewährt. Ideen zur Umkonstruktion sind in der Umsetzung.

56054 "British Steel Llanwern" on a train of loaded HAAs about to leave Blindwells Opencast Coal loading site for the short run to Cockenzie Power Station on 10 May 1999..

The loading plant was demolished 2 years later in July 2001 and the power station demolished in 2015. Even the viewpoint is now unusable owing to tree growth.

A rare move today which was commonplace in the 1990s.

When Blindwells Opencast Mine was in operation, empty MGR trains from Millerhill would use this crossover at Meadowmill to access Blindwells from the ECML up line. Loaded coal trains from Blindells, destined for Cockenze power station, would also use it in the opposite direction.

Today there was an ECS Azuma from Doncaster Carr IEP to Prestonpans UPL (5Q67) and here 801228 is making the move from the down main to up main in order to access the loop.

After a 20 minute layover the train returned to Doncaster. I thought it was worth recording the crossover in use.

A highlight of the recent 'improvements' by Lothian and East Coast was to discontinue the established link between Tranent and the two sides of Prestonpans known locally as the top and bottom Pans.

We can go back to the days of the renowned local operator Terry Wiles who maintained a network of services between the towns and included a link to Port Seton. Demographics have changed since then with new housing at both Windygoul and Blindwells. But the old areas still remain - a point perhaps missed by the planners. These old and new communities still require links and the answer could well have been from 'within' as it often is. Service 15, once a regular service between Joppa and Fairmilehead has been subject to various failed experiments since the 'regional regime' took over. The latest having it truncated at King's Road. Perhaps continuing this service over the 26 route to Tranent could have saved the anxiety of local passengers (not to mention subsidies which we all pay for), and provided useful links between Tranent, Prestonpans, Musselburgh Portobello and the city.

Here at Marine garage we see Olympian Royale 431 in 'mac-red' livery screened for Tranent with the intriguing tramboard 'via Bush and Auchendinny' prominent. Destination screens now read 'Easter Bush' perhaps to avoid any confusions with bush a plant which no doubt can be found in most Edinburgh gardens!

On 1st July 1981, Class 26 BRCW Type 2 26006 accelerates empties away from Cockenzie power station through Prestonpans, destination the Blindwells opencast site.

A print scan - hopefully I will find the negs from this series in due course.

26004 slowly draws a loaded mgr rake out of Blindwells open cast, south of Edinburgh on the ECML - prior to its electrification.

LNER Class 91, 91129, is caught speeding towards Edinburgh at Blindwells with 1S02. This is the 0615 Doncaster - Edinburgh Waverley LNER service on the 8th November 2018 and is seen passing here at 0910

One of the new Azuma's, 800111, is seen passing Blindwells on the 2nd April 2019 with 5Q42. This is the 1003 Edinburgh - Newcastle test run and is caught in lovely morning sunshine.

Early morning and the rising sun shines on a northbound MGR at Inveresk. Working a Tyne Yard - Millerhill Yard empty MGR is EWS liveried 60047 at 0630 on the 24th August 1999.

Those were the days when numerous MGR's worked this section of the ECML, with not just Anglo-Scottish workings but also to and from Cockenzie Power Station and Blindwells Opencast.

Never ever thought at that time that they all would cease to run !
