26007 (British Railways, allocated to Haymarket TMD & one of seven fitted with "slow speed control").
Spl empty merry-go-round coal train from either Millerhill Yard or Leith Docks to Blindwells Opencast Disposal Point, which was formed of 29 empty HAAs with canopies (to cut down on blowing dust at speed).
Prestonpans - 1008 (only 3 minutes after 26001 headed the other way with a loaded working) - 25/07/86.
This was plan B, as in those days there was no Internet & 1015 from Edinburgh to Dundee was 47109!
26006, carrying red stripe railfreight livery, has just backed its train of merry go round coal empties out of Cockenzie power station and will shortly head back to the Blindwells opencast site for a further load.
The twin chimneys of the power station are visible above the rather glum looking housing estate on the eastern side of Prestonpans.
While not in Leith, Prestonpans is only a few miles from the town, where the 2013 film ‘Sunshine on Leith’ played out against a backdrop of a typically Scottish suburban landscape.
Photograph by an unknown photographer, now part of my collection.
56123 reverses a loaded coal train into Cockenzie reception yard. The train had traveled the short distance from Blindwells Opencast Site into Prestonpans up loop, then reversed into the yard.
37667 "Meldon Quarry Centenary", with a train that has traveled the short distance from Blindwells opencast coal plant, and has crossed from the ECML down line to up line and is now running into Prestonpans up loop. It will then reverse into Cockenzie Power Station reception yard. Next it will run round its train and haul it up through the discharge plant.
All gone since the closure of both Blindwells and the power station.
Taken through a wire mesh fence, NOT a trespass shot.
One from the archives for Christmas. A scene long gone as 37692 "The Lass O' Ballochmyle" stands in the siding at Blindwells Opencast site. It is waiting for the road to take its train load of coal the short distance to Cockenzie power station.
Since then, the loco has been withdrawn, the Blindwells loading facility demolished and the power station decomissioned and demolished. The photo position is now very overgrown.
Lass O' Ballochmyle is a poem by Robert Burns. Ballochmyle is near Mauchline.

On 29 March 1991, 56104 brought a train of coal from Blindwells Opencast Site to Leith Docks for export. It is seen over the coal drops within the docks.
I just drove into the docks, took my shots and drove out again. How things have changed in 25 years.
Having found a good location you might as well milk it. Here, Mainline blue liveried 37798 reverses a train of loaded HAAs into Cockenzie Power Station yard. It is reversing from the top end of Prestonpans up loop presumably having arrived from Blindwells Opencast site, one mile to the east.
In crisp winter sunsight 37401 passes Blindwells with the empty Oxwellmains to Powderhall waste containers. 37401 was painted in the dedicated Royal Scotsman livery and carrying "The Royal Scotsman" nameplate in place of its usual "Mary Queen of Scots" nameplate.
The loco is looking rather grubby owing to the winter weather.
In the days when Blindwell's coal was taken to the Aire Valley power stations in Yorkshire. 56060 "Selby Coalfield" and 56120 approach Grantshouse loops on a sunny, February afternoon. A single Class 56 loco was not allowed on 36 loaded MGR wagons owing to the gross weight when climbing Cockburnspath bank. Hence they were double headed to Grantshouse loops where the assisting loco came off and returned light engine to Millerhill yard. A Class 60 could handle such a train on its own.
The train is pictured on the deviation that was built following the Penmanshiel tunnel collapse in 1979. The white railings, where the original A1 road crossed the old line, can be seen on the RH edge of the picture.
Back to the archives. On a hazy and soft sunlit evening, 60078
" Stac Pollaidh" heads south with a trainload of low sulphur Scottish coal destined for an English power station. It is passing the loading plant of the former Blindwells Opencast Coal plant.
The 60 was less than 2 years old and was carrying the "Black Diamond" sub-sector decals of the coal fleet.
Another unrepeatable scene.
A rather grubby 37225 brings the daily (at that time) North Blyth - Fort William loaded Alcan tanks past the Blindwells opencast coal loading plant.
The plant subsequently closed with the loading plant being demolished in summer 2001. The siding is now totally overgrown and the viewpoint is obscured by bushes and trees.
The loaded train now only operates 2 or 3 times per week, hauled by a GBRf class 66, but the train is normally twice the length (22 wagons).
The opencast site has been filled in and is currently being established as a large housing estate.
The lamp post really does lean.
Whilst looking for something else, I came across this little gem. 37225 passes Blindwells Coal Loading site with the North Blyth to Fort William Alcan tanks.
Today the viewpoint is completly bushed up, the line to the loading point is disused and covered in saplings and the train is now hauled by a GBRf Class 67.
At least the service is still running. The leaning lamp post is now hidden by tress.

Midland Mainline 43073/081 head in to Edinburgh at Blindwells, hired in on a GNER working.
A sadly missed location.

Window shot taken from 2J31 18.15 Edinburgh to Dundee led by 27046, about to pass a coal MGR with double header 20189 and 37191 on 18th July 1986
37191 was painted in large logo livery and was named
"INTERNATIONAL YOUTH YEAR 1985 in January 1985
The loaded coal MGR was probably from Blindwells Opencast or Millerhill yard to Longannet Power Station
We had 27046 for haulage as far as Inverkeithing
26001 and a classmate, both with coal sub-sector decals, approach Prestonpans station whilst tripping 36 loaded HAAs from Blindwells to Millerhill. Later the wagons would then go back south along the ECML probably hauled by a Class 56, to an English power station. This was a short term arrangement until the Blindwells loading point could accept three axle bogie locos. Circa 1990
Blindwells open cast coal site is closed and the land returned to its condition prior to coal extraction, so no coal trains now.
The down loop no longer sees coal trains for Cockenzie Power Station since that establishment has been demolished and the engineers' siding on the left is severed and out of use.
26007 - Empty merry-go-round coal train to Blindwells Opencast Disposal Point, which was formed of empty HAAs & some with canopies) - Prestonpans - 1338 - 13/08/86.
In 1995 Blindwells Opencast Coal site was in full production. 56101 clears its throat as it prepares to take a trainload of HAAs to Cockenzie Power Station, about 1 mile away.
Today the power station has been demolished, the coal loading plant and infrastructure removed the hole filled in and the construction of a huge housing estate is underway.
What is commonplace one day can soon become history.
More Class 60s on East Coast coal trains. 60091
"An Teallach" approaches the road bridge at Blindwells with a southbound coal train. The points, bottom right, lead under the bridge to the Blindwells Opencast loading hopper.
5 weeks after I photographed it in South Wales, 37248 "Midland Railway Centre" is in charge of the empty Edinburgh refuse train passing Blindwells on its journey from Oxwellmains back to Powderhall.
Later on in the evening sun, 56088 rolls down the grade into Prestonpans with a rake of hooded HAAs. No idea if they were empties returning from England or a loaded train from Blindwells Opencast site to Millerhill.
The impressive background of poplar trees were cut down some years later but the vegetation has now recovered.
56118 again and the wee signal at the throat of Cockenzie Reception Sidings. 56118 is running round its rake of now empty HAAs .
That is it for 56s at Blindwells and Cockenzie. The coal loading plant, the power station and discharge shed are long since gone.
A large housing estate is currently being built on the site of Blindwells Opencast Workings. The end of an ere.
56054 "British Steel Llanwern", in Transrail livery and putting out the characteristic plume of unburnt diesel, hauls a train of loaded HAAs destined for Cockenzie Power Station. Having travelled the half mile from Blindwells loading point, it is crossing over from the down ECML to the up line in order to access Prestonpans up loop.
Taken from the footbridge that leads to Meadowmill playing fields, the site of the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745.
Catching a glint o the soft evening sun, 56101 "Mutual Improvement" and 56049 double head theDeanside Transit to Wisbech, Spillers Pet Food train. It is passing the coal loading hopper at the Blindwells Opencast Coal site. The site closed and the hopper dismantled in 2001. Part of the site is now becoming a large housing estate.
When Spillers moved their warehouse to a non rail connected site this traffic ceased and it now goes by road.
37695 brings the empy "Edinburgh Binliner" past Blindwells Opencast Coal site. This was a six days a week working and Blindwells was my local photography spot. All now gone, the phot-spot owing to trees and bushes. The opencast site was filled in and is becoming a large housing estate.
As the Swallow liveried 91119 seems to be visiting Edinburgh under the cover of darkness, I have delved into my archive for a genuine Inter-City Swallow liveried 91 and train. 91020 nears Blindwells as it heads into the sun in September 1991.
A rather battered looking still EWS liveried DB Cargo 66076 sweeps round the bend at Blindwells Opencast heading the 4E96 Mossend to Tees Dock modal.
66 198 approaching Blindwells in lovely winter sun on Wednesday 30 December 2020 with 4Z98 0919 Tees Dock South Bank - Mossend with a load of 14 IKA's carrying Tesco containers
Blindwells again. Low sulpher content coal was extracted at Blinwells opencast mine. Much of it was loaded into block trains and tripped to Millerhill yard. Here is seen 37194 piloting 56096 on a loaed coal train from Millerhill destined for one of the Aire Valley power stations in Yorkshire. The 37 would come off the train at Grantshouse loops and return to Millerhill, leaving the 56 to continue on its own to Yorkshire.
Super power!
56101 "Mutual Improvement" and 56049 power past the former Blindwells opencast site with the weekdays Deanside Transit - Wisbech pet food train for Spillers. The flat sides of the 56s were perfect for providing a glint from the low sun.
I seem to remember that the train ceased to run when Spillers moved from their rail connected warehouse at Wisbech.
Blindwells opencast site closed and the loading plant dismantled in July 2001.
26 001 is seen heading west through some summer haze with a loaded Blindwells Colliery to Leith Docks MGR conveying coal for export.
(Image taken between 1st - 8th June 1982).
26003 - Prestonpans - 1005 - 13/08/86 (Un-identified [Headcode - probably an "as ordered" trip or target working, but without the weekly coal programme I'am unable to confirm the working / Origin - assumed to be Millerhill S.S ot Leith Docks / Departure time] empty merry-go-round coal train to Blindwells Opencast Disposal Point, which consisted of 25 individually numbered empty HAAs without canopies (I assume the rain that day would keep the dust from blowing off the wagons).
Two minutes earlier 26005 had headed the other way with an empty train from Cockenzie Power Station & this was followed just 16 minutes by 26004 (shame about the order, otherwise it could have been 3, 4 & 5!) on a loaded train to Cockenzie Power Station:-

70 802 passing the site of what used to be Blindwells opencast colliery with 6S31 0621 Doncaster - Millerhill on Monday 28 March 2022.
The former opencast colliery site is now being developed into a new town with the first houses at the west end of the development now being occupied. I very much regret not taking any photos of the opencast when it was in full production and with the housing development proceeding rapidly it won't be long before the landscape changes again.
The 0752 Aberdeen - London Kings Cross LNER service is seen passing Blindwells on Saturday 10th November 2018 at 1043. This HST has Power Car 43300 leading with an unidentified Power Car on the rear.
All gone. 28 years ago and in beautiful evening light, 37278 and 37032 bring the weekday Deanside Transit to Wisbech, Spillers pet food train past the opencast coal site at Blindwells.
1. The train ceased to run when Spillers moved their depot from Wisbech to a non-railway connected site and
2. the Blindwells site closed and all the infrastructure demolished in 2001.
