This was supposed to be one frame of a 620 frame animation. However, since just this one frame took seven and a half hours to render (convert the 3D model scene to an image), I abandoned the animation idea. 😕
P.S. 620 frames would have taken 27 weeks, 4 days and 18 hours to render!

One of the benefits of Blender being open source is that there are numerous development forks adding different features. Builds (and source) for these forks are made available via the web.
For the last two years a few developers have won grants from Google's Summer of Code (SoC) to add new features to Blender. The feature I am most excited about from this year's S0C is the new sculpting mode. This is a feature that has been available in a number of commercial packages for years, so in itself its not revolutionary. But it is exciting to see it being developed for and added to Blender.
Below are renders of a 30 minute 3D doodle I did last night exploring a small portion of the tools available in sculpt mode. Two things impressed me. The stability of this feature/mode/build and the speed. This sculpt mode is multi-resolution, you can add progressively denser meshes to your model (via what appears to be catmul-clark subdivision surfaces, or another such technique... but what do i know?) as 'layers' and edit your model in any layer of resolution.
I started here with a cube and added 7 layers of resolution resulting in a very dense sphere. I then got out my graphics tablet and started doodles. Did i say the sculpt mode supports graphics tablets and pen pressure? Well, it does. And quite well thank you.
Finally, I rendered out several angles using Blender's standard render, ambient occlussion render and edge render.
I won't go into any more detail. If you are interested check out this forum thread for links to the build and examples. If you haven't used Blender before, the interface is at first confusing and daunting, but if you persevere you will learn and perhaps love the logic of the UI.
