I decided to have a look at Indirect Lighting in Blender 2.56. There are no lamps in this scene just the objects set to emit. You can scroll the emit value up to 2 with the mouse but if you click on the number and change the value you can get higher values. Suzanne is set to emit at 0.2 because any higher and you lose the details. The other meshes have no details so this doesn't matter. Also, I found that you can set the colour values above 1 as well by clicking on the number and changing rather than mouse and drag

This image uses a material I got from BlenderKit. This is a snake skin material. Getting the material scale size correct was key for this. The best scale size depends on the size of the object the material is applied to.

The background is an hdri photo from Poly Haven that forms the world surface of the image.

I like the photo-realism of this image.
