•Behind the Scenes:
oFirst Appearance: Avatar
Bladder polyps (Na’vi name: rawp) are small, rounded plants that grow in clusters on the forest floor, resembling blue-tinged stones. The larger leaves store water and salt, and are grazed on by animals and harvested by the Na’vi. They have smaller brown leaves close to the ground are able to absorb high concentrations of ammonia, and can use animal waste as a form of nutrition. When leaves are removed, new ones grow quickly in their place.
Most other plants are unable to use manure as a direct food source; however, the bladder polyp is a halophyte, and can survive in very salty soils. The salt accumulating in the larger leaves absorb water through osmosis. They grow in a wide range of locations, and there are even patches of them up and at the top of Iknimaya, the "Stairway to Heaven."
The bladder polyp is eaten by the Na’vi for its juicy and salty taste, which is somewhat like a pickle.
Bladder Cicada - Cystosoma saundersii. I don't think this is a Green Grocer based on the spacing of the ocelli but any ID welcome. These guys start up their call on dusk and make noises for around an hour and then they shut down. I was lucky to catch one in the top of a bush (No ID) for a few photos and put it back where it was.
The Cicadas at Ballandean could call all day and you had to be careful walking under their tree as they piddle when disturbed.
Kelp fronds and pneumatocysts. Pneumatocysts, gas-filled bladders, float the kelp plant off the ocean bottom toward the surface and sunlight, where the leaf-like blades and stipes of the kelp plant grow fastest. Giant kelp can grow up to 2' in a single day given optimal conditions. Epic submarine forests of kelp grow throughout California's Southern Channel Islands.

"Colutea arborescens is a species of leguminous shrub known by the common name bladder senna. It is native to Europe and North Africa, but it is known on other continents where it is grown as an ornamental and used in landscaping for erosion control. It is also known in the wild as an occasionally weedy escapee from cultivation. The shrub takes a rounded form and has many branches covered in deciduous leaves. The leaves are made up of many pairs of slightly hairy oval-shaped leaflets, each up to about 3 centimeters long. The inflorescence is a raceme of generally pea-like yellow flowers about 3 centimeters long. The fruit is an inflated bladdery pod which dries to a papery texture..." (Wikipedia)

Shadow is known as ABC (angry black cat) and NBC (nasty black cat) because he has a huge personality. He came as a victim of divorce: His loving person couldn't keep him, but the other half of the marriage wasn't interested in dealing with his health requirements. Shadow does beat up the dogs and is happy to remind you that he's the emperor, but he's also sweet and cuddly when you're down and will defend the other cats against the dogs.
Fucus vesiculosus, known by the common name bladder wrack or bladderwrack is also known by the common names black tang, rockweed, bladder fucus, sea oak, black tany, cut weed, dyers fucus, red fucus, and rock wrack. It was the original source of iodine, discovered in 1811, and was used extensively to treat goitre, a swelling of the thyroid gland related to iodine deficiency.

Salazaria mexicana, commonly known by variants on bladder sage or paperbag bush, is a shrub of the mint family Lamiaceae distinctive for its calyx lobes that develop into small bag- or bladder-like shells around the fruits. Widespread in the southwestern part of North America, it is the only member of its genus. This plant takes the form of a rounded shrub, typically 50-100 cm high, sometimes larger. The stems form a spreading rigid pattern, with the tips often becoming spine-like. The leaves are small, 3-15 mm long and 2-8 mm wide, ovate to elliptic, entire, and with a very short or nonexistent petiole. The 2-lipped flowers develop in pairs facing away from each other; the upper lip is white to light violet and hairy, while the lower lip is 3-lobed and intense dark violet. The calyx starts out as simply a base to the flower, reddish-purple in shade, and then as the flower ages, it expands into its distinctive bag shape, 1-2 cm across, the dried flower eventually falling out of the hole in the end.
Flowering is generally April through June, but the bags are durable and may last on the plant into winter, becoming dry and papery.
“RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2012” This garden takes you on a journey that represents freedom from the symptoms of Overactive Bladder (OAB), a condition that affects more than seven million adults in the UK. Reaching over the troubled water, a bright and vibrant bridge provides a pathway for those suffering from OAB. The bridge symbolises relief and freedom through the help that is available to manage the condition. The garden’s whirlpool water feature symbolises a distressing and unpredictable need to relieve the bladder, which can lead people with OAB to feel isolated, depressed and alone. Drawing the eye upwards out of the mire, a tree-lined bridge offers the pathway to freedom, allowing people with OAB to live life the way they choose.

I have gall bladder problems, from time to time, and have had two mild-moderate attacks in 3 days. I decided to make the soup from gallbladderattack.com to see if it would help.
I've blogged about this here - thetravelingaustinvegan.blogspot.com/2012/10/greens-green...
I had my gallbladder out 2 weeks ago and here it is!
Well, not quite - Marceline brought me this plush gallbladder yesterday - amazing that such a thing exists!

Before the invention of canning jars, home cooks used to have to seal their marmalades with pig's bladders stretched over the jar.
Silene vulgaris. Named after the swollen bladder-like calyx immediately behind the white petals. Up to 80cm in height, flowers 16 to 18mm in width. Seen June to August on well-drained soils and in particular chalk. Widespread but common only in southern England.
Bladder stones used to be a widespread condition in England. This is because a major risk factor for bladder stones is a poor diet that lacks a good balance of proteins and carbohydrates. docturs.com/dd/pg/groups/17037/bladder-stones/
Colutea arborescens
Bladder Senna
is indigenous to the Mediterranean; it has yellow flowers. It has a height and spread of up to 5 m
The seed is poisonous
The leaves are diuretic and purgative. The leaves are sometimes used as a substitute for senna as a laxative, though they are much milder in their action. The plant is rather unreliable when used medicinally so is rarely employed in herbalism. The seeds are emetic. They are also toxic.
Gut weed, Enteromorpha intestinalis. The fronds are membranous and comprise of tubes that can inflate, having a gut like appearance. So with bladders and guts....quite the human digestive system on show. At Runswick Bay

X-ray of Booker's bladder area. No stones, masses, blockages, or infections.
We think the symptoms (yelping, barking, spinning in pain, and dribbling pee) are actually related to pain in his knee which has a partially torn ligament. His vet recommends waiting on surgery for the knee until it fully tears because the recovery is 8 weeks of inactivity. This will be difficult, if not impossible, with Mr. Chew around harassing him constantly.
