I did this blackwork piece in honor of my noble ancestors, the Clan Lindsay of Scotland. This was one of their mottoes (the other was something dozy about enduring bravely) which means "While I breathe, I hope."

The front of the shirt! The design of the strips is my own attempt to be original, but I definately tried to make it look as if it were period. It consists of 4 alternating motifs: a threaded needle (my heraldry), a coffee bush flower, a coffee bush berry+leaves combo, and a stylized ermine in the shape of a flower (both of us have ermine in our heraldry).

This was a delight to stitch due in part to the bright colours.
It was my first foray into Blackwork stitchery and really love the effect.
Pattern was from designer Lesley Teare.
Stitched on 28 count DMC Linen Natural with DMC threads and Mill Hill beads.
Finished as a flat fold by my husband.
Was gifted as a birthday present to my neighbour who turned 90 today.
In this case "greenwork". Designs based on Christmas themes are shared here: www.gingerbreadsnowflakes.com/node/846
Completed pieces of blackwork, motif taken from Holbein the Younger's portrait of Mrs. Pemberton, c. 1540.
(Before washing and blocking, obviously.)
This design was given in my monthly mag and I just had to try it! I had some spare evenweave and plenty of black silk, so gave it a go. Really like this design and the blackwork style.
About 10x4 inches
Finished: March 2011
My blackwork that I started ages ago - and as I posted a picture when I started I can see just how long it took me! About 2 years as I'm not sure how long it had been when I took the first pic.
Many thanks to Tam's Creations for the pattern: www.tamscreations.com/Pages/Freebies.aspx

A DMC design, but centre altered. It was designed as a flat piece, but I made it into a pincushion. Single black silk thread on 28 count linen.
