I took all these photos on Saturday, April 16, 2016. My friend- Vern- asked me if I'd like to come take photos. I said I'd probably be able to do one day. Next year, I plan on going all three days.

For three days, different blacksmiths from around the world (there were some from Denmark, England, and even Australia) compete by making different horseshoes. Each round lasts an hour and they start with two flat pieces of metal. Where you see two-man teams is a novice. Novice blacksmiths have a more experienced blacksmith run their fire for them. They also do speed rounds, where they get 14 minutes to make a horseshoe after looking at a cadaver hoof for ten seconds.

White Knob Mining District

Significant copper deposits were first discovered in the White Knob Mountains in 1879 and by 1884, the White Knob Area was being developed into one of the largest copper producers in Idaho. The tram towers here, from the early 1900s, were part of an aerial tram system in the White Knob Mining District used to carry ore over four miles down the mountain to the smelter and blast furnaces from the Empire Mine to the railroad. This historic mining complex contains a railroad grade, industrial mining buildings and features, adits and ruins of miner’s residences. Recent work has restored the tram towers and railroad trestle.

Jens is an extremely talented blacksmith. He has been forging for over 20 years and approaches his skill as an art. He firmly believes in the importance of all the elements working together and the respect of the flame and intent as he forges blocks of iron into beautiful masterpieces. Whether its the hard iron ore or soft bronze and delicate steel, he understands the metals and their needs and uses his experience and knowledge to create his work. It has been such a pleasure getting to know him and Clara and working with them as he demonstrated his craft. I am also proud to say that he used several of my photographs from our recent shoot for his new brochure advertising his business!

But such sweet noise: a blacksmith hammering, clanging, on metal. In this case it was making horseshoes.
