Blacksmithing at the John C. Campbell Folk School

The Blacksmiths Arms in Broughton Mills dates back to 1577 and was originally a farmhouse called Broadstones. In 1748 archive records list the property as being an Inn, working farm of 34 acres and blacksmiths. Before this it would have been a "beer house" with the farmer serving ale in the kitchen for travellers and local workers.
The internal structure of the Blacksmiths arms remains unchanged with oak panelled corridor, original farmhouse range, badly stuffed fox, large slate floors from local quarries, and oak beamed ceilings. It is the only pub in the Lake District listed in the National Inventory of historic pubs.
There was a demonstration of blacksmithing at the Whyalla Show connected with the Mt Laura Homestead Museum. We didn't have a chance to make it to the homestead, but blacksmiths are always good to see.

Blacksmith at work at the Georgia Agrirama. I did question his working on a Medieval Shield in the late 1800s America. He said he was bored and tired of making horse shoes. :-D

This blacksmith, dressed in a minimum of clothing, was forging heavy blades for a sythe-like tool. As he hammered the steel, occasional sparks flew off, some of which landed on unsuspecting spectators.
A group of men sat and watched him working his magic, transforming billets of steel into blades, seemingly mesmerised by the process.
