In the early Middle Ages, including the Vikings, metalworking took place in a still quite primitive blacksmith’s shop – without a chimney flue above the forge.

We have tried to depict such a Viking forge. The set is new and exclusive for the March round of We love RP and 25% reduced for the duration of the event.

All parts of the set can also be bought separately and are absolutely lowprim.

There are versions with and without the carved viking dragon decor included in the package.

All items are Original Mesh, copy/mod and advanced lighting enabled.

Set includes Forge with bellows (2 LI), Melting Furnace with bellow (2LI), tooltable (1LI) and a set of boxes with coal and iron ore (0.5 LI each).

Can't get many shots at the moment, so did a drawing and added some Flames

A blacksmith is a metalsmith who creates objects from wrought iron or steel by forging the metal, using tools to hammer, bend, and cut (cf. whitesmith). Blacksmiths produce objects such as gates, grilles, railings, light fixtures, furniture, sculpture, tools, agricultural implements, decorative and religious items, cooking utensils and weapons.

While there are many people who work with metal such as farriers, wheelwrights, and armorers, the blacksmith had a general knowledge of how to make and repair many things, from the most complex of weapons and armor to simple things like nails or lengths of chain.

This guy also creates jewellery from copper and silver.

This shot was taken after dark with some light painting.

Picked up recently at a market in Seville, this appears to be a blacksmiths workbook, with annotated photographs. Lots of wrought iron work.

Four young blacksmiths show us their horseshoe making abilities. The message seems to be that bread is lacking there if I am reading it correctly. The photographer is in Konigsbruck which had a large training camp there. They may be hungry and this trade was destined to become obsolete in their lifetimes, but it might have kept them from being casualties as you cannot afford to lose blacksmiths in an army that moves supplies and artillery by horses and mules.

2013/03/26 - Hanoi

It is our 3rd visit in Hanoi during this trip and finally we had a chance to see it. And we like it! Today we were walking round the Old Quarter and street blacksmiths was my favourite bit. And I like the description how to find them - "follow your ears" :-)

Plan for tomorrow - visit Uncle Ho. A number of tickets is limited, so please keep fingers crossed!

The only issue - we are back in London in 18 days :-(

The blacksmith is shoeing the horse in Büyük Ada, one of the Prince Islands in İstanbul. This is the biggest of four islands, where no cars or motor vehicles are allowed in. Arriving at the island is done through boats. There are horse-cabs, mainly for touristic purposes, which entangles people around the island. Horses are the main livelihood of the island. There are more than 200 cabs, with around 500 horses. They are taking care of horses at the main cab station. Captured the right moment.

After two years I'm finally sharing these photos of my latest Dark Age creation, a medieval Blacksmith Watermill that specialize on making enchanted weapons. Using the nearby river, the mill mechanism turns the shafts and powers the blacksmith drop-hammer.

It has a vegetable garden and a courtyard as well as a kitchen and smokestack. I built-in Power Functions to light up both the fireplace and the oven, as well as move the water wheel and drop hammer. I have a full video on this MOC on my YouTube channel here - youtu.be/81YqJs8wtBg

I hope you enjoy my creation, and check out the video!

August 20 saw the annual Scottish festival at the Amherst Museum here in western NY. In addition to the kilts and bagpipes there were athletic events such as caber tossing where the contestants throw large tree trunks through the air.

But for me, the most visually interesting demonstration was given by Peter Parry, the blacksmith.

Follow the jump to see photos and more.

At the time I was with the blacksmith, most people were watching the opening ceremony. Peter Parry, the blacksmith was very helpful with photography. He asked, "Do you want to see some sparks?"

Peter sprinkled some borax on the iron before putting it into the forge. Borax forms an antioxidant glass around the iron and when first hammered gives a truly impressive shower of sparks. He normally doesn't do this with a large crowd around, but since I was the only one there he was happy to put on a show for me.

Other than resizing and adding the "Thomas Diakun" logo in Adobe Lightroom, this photo has not been "Photoshopped." The flying sparks are right out of the camera.

An old workbench in the old blacksmith shop at Calke Abbey.

Calke Abbey is a Grade I listed country house near Ticknall, Derbyshire, England, in the care of the charitable National Trust.

The site was an Augustinian priory from the 12th century until its dissolution by Henry VIII. The present building, named Calke Abbey in 1808, was never actually an abbey, but is a Baroque mansion built between 1701 and 1704.

The house was owned by the Harpur family for nearly 300 years until it was passed to the Trust in 1985 in lieu of death duties. Today, the house is open to the public and many of its rooms are deliberately displayed in the state of decline in which the house was handed to the Trust.

On the Chobe River, there is an abundance of birds, and a wide variety of different avian species.

During this incredible trip to Botswana, we were privileged to see and photograph birds that we have never seen before.

This is a blacksmith lapwing, also known as a blacksmith plover.

As we were in our photographic boat on the bank of the Chobe River, this bird came quite close to us, and I seized the opportunity to photograph the lapwing in the warm afternoon light as it stood on one leg.

There is something about a brightly red painted building that I like.

I don't know the history of this structure, only to say, it is located off a rural road just a few miles outside my home city of Winnipeg.

This week it was happening a medieval festival at the Arundel Castle in England. The event was great. There was all sort of traditional medieval crafts and this mate was one of them. These knives were all his doing and we had a lovely talk about how he only keeps doing it for fun and passion!
