My soul redeems tonight, celestial fight
Goddess of beauty, Venus versus Mars
It tears the word apart, no one can find
A safer place where we can love all night
We go, we go, we goin' right
We go, we go, go all night
We go, we go, we goin' right
We go, we go, go all night
My soul redeems tonight, celestial fight
Goddess of beauty, Venus versus Mars
It tears the word apart, no one can find
A safer place where we can love all night

The first instar of the common yellow swallowtail (Papilio machaon) looks quite different from this in black with a white band/spot, but after moulting, it looks almost, but not quite like this. Have a look here for a freshly moulted one: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53016008553/
This one is the same instar, ie it hasn't moulted - just eaten a lot and then they end up with this wonderful green hue.
Also, how about that black nailpolish?
This beauty with the black nailpolish is an old world swallowtail (Papilio machaon), also known as the common yellow swallowtail.
The saying goes: a lean, green eating-machine - but while it is very green and very much an eating machine - I dobt you would describe it as "lean"!
Hush now, hush now, close your eyes,
Night is thick with creeping lies.
In the hills where cold winds wail,
Something drags her iron nail.
Click… clack… Blacknail’s back.
Hide your bones and mind the track.
Step too loud or cry too long—
Blacknail comes to right the wrong.
She smells hunger, she smells fright,
Finds the lonely in the night.
Broken teeth and tangled hair,
Yellow lantern–devil stare.
Click… clack… Blacknail’s back.
Wrap your blanket, don’t look back.
Hear that scrape along the stair?
Blacknail knows you’re hiding there.
Bones for dinner…
Blood for tea…
Blacknail hums so joyfully…
But be brave and still as stone,
Hold your breath and guard your own.
For the hag loves those who stand—
Strength of heart stays Blacknail’s hand.
Click… clack… Blacknail’s back.
Lantern dim and sky turned black.
Show no fear and she’ll pass by—
Else she’d like to hear you cry.

This caterpillar will hopefully turn into a common yellow swallowtail (Papilio machaon) next year, but today I thought we should talk a little about how the caterpillar defends itself. They have what's called an osmeterium wich is a y-shaped organ on the forehead which they can inflate when startled and which emits a foul stench.
Together with my son, I attempted to trigger this which turned out to not be so easy. We tried bothering one caterpillar after the other, but they all seemed rather reluctant to display it. This one is I think the seventh or eight we tried and finally, it flashed it for an instant - but I was ready and got the shot.
Part 1 here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53049300602/ is it in the same position, but with the osmeterium tucked away.
The final instar caterpillar of the old-world swallowtail (Papilio machaon), also known as the common yellow swallowtail has a truly wonderful green hue.
Looking close at the front legs, we can also see that it likes black nail polish.
The next time I see one of these I am going to poke it a little to see if I can get it to extend that orange, Y-shaped osmeterium from its forehead. They do that when startled and it can emit a foul stench, intended to scare off predators.
This caterpillar is in it's final larval stage before having eaten enough and will soon turn into a chrysalis to begin the metamorphosis into an adult common yellow swallowtail (Papilio machaon), also known as the old world swallowtail.
If you look closely (or even zoom in) in front of the caterpillar, you can see a small fly of some sort. It almost looks like the caterpillar watching it.

The old world swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is one of, if not the, largest butterflies in Sweden and the larvae is also quite impressive. This one is enjoying the huge leaves on a purple angelica (Angelica gigas).

Ferruginous Duck / aythya nyroca. Staffordshire. 10/05/18.
I'm always rather dubious about the origins of these ducks...
This was my third UK sighting of one and as it showed well just beyond some reeds it seemed an ideal opportunity to make a portrait image. The white iris really stands out from the rich chestnut head colouring.
it feels like it.
this is boring.

anyone know why?

This caterpillar is in the 3rd instar stage (out of 5) and after that it will pupate into an adult old world swallowtail (Papilio machaon), also known as the common yellow swallowtail.
At this stage in life, they basically do nothing but eat, sleep and eat some more. The plant it is in the process of devouring is a purple angelica (Angelica gigas).
i've been thinking a lot about it.
thinking really hard.
but i'm trying my best to stay on my side. on the side i built for everyone to cheer me on for. i know they're all right about you.

This pretty thing peeking out between the leaves of a purple angelica (Angelica gigas) is the rather chunky caterpillar of the common yellow swallowtail (Papilio machaon), also known as the old world swallowtail.
Ferruginous Duck / aythya nyroca. Attenborough, Nottinghamshire. 15/04/19.
‘WHO KNOWS.’
A pair of these rare ducks turned up at a local nature reserve a couple of weeks ago, too good to ignore! I left it rather late in ther stay to go and photograph them but made it in the nick of time. I think they left the day after.
It’s impossible to know their true origin but on the positive side, neither bird wore leg rings and all their wing feathers were intact … who knows …
