Partnering with the Danish Museum of Science and Technology, InfinIT, a Danish network for innovative utilization of IT, Cotter (Laser Cutting Services) and VRKSTEDET (Underbroen) we created a Bits & Beers to kickstart our newest venture - a series of workshops called "From Old Patents to New Prototypes".
Our theme was 'crazy inventions that can change the world' and our speakers included some very special people who have contributed to our world!

I still have pieces to glaze and fire. I am making a stack-able totem for the garden. The pieces will be inter-changeable. I have five more pieces in the works plus a head-topper. I will thread them on a dowel.

On a bit of a trawl today for some different Flickrable stuff, I came across half a dozen former Foden original B&W prints. They came into my ownership via an Uncle who worked for the firm and was aware of my keen interest in such things as a teenager.
Surprisingly in view of that interest, I was never very good at remembering model types, though the Ferris eight wheeler represented my favourite style ... pity you couldn't get one with a two stroke! Was this an S40?

Just finished reading The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. The movie of the same name is only the first half of the book...and it's the second half that's incredibly powerful. I felt sick and then I cried and then I was filled with a very durable sense of hope. Great book, on balance. Second time reading it.

A little bit later for our walk with Bonny this morning as we had a treat in store for her. We took her to our local river (the river Teme) and got her in for a swim. The river flows too fast for her to swim in (we think) and it is, apparently, the fastest flowing river in the UK. Another factoid is that this river, at this point, marks the boundary between the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. As the river is low I managed to find some stones to hop over so that at this point I probably have a foot in each county. We get Bonny to swim in the pool above me to my right.
Later on I cleared out a couple of flower beds in readiness for some lupins I have grown from seed. I didn't get to plant out the lupins as it was suggested that the lawn should be cut. Guess what I did!
Please ignore the incorrect white balance on this, the flash was bouncing off a bookcase. This is a shot I took for somebody to look at this, for some work that might be done on this. I'll get some better shots of this later on, when I can photograph this in morning sunlight.
This parasol, which dates from either the 1850s or the 1860s, is now a bit of a mystery to me and my contact in Illinois who restores these. She's never seen one that joins quite like this before and she's very experienced in her field. So I've got a call out to another contact in San Francisco who teaches parasol history and recovering - if I hear back from her, perhaps she might have the answer to our join-hinge-chain-sheath-thing problem.
The ivory finial and rib tips on a parasol of this age usually point to this being an example imported from Europe - which would make this a little more rare than most parasols. This was just one of the lucky eBay scores I had over the past two weeks - more to come along soon. This came from central NY state, from a dealer who thought this was a child's or doll's parasol - when in reality, the 29 or 30 inch length says otherwise. When it arrived I was surprised at the fineness (and flimsiness) of the handle, and it came as no surprise to me when somebody mistook this as a child's parasol.
A bit of a different day for me today. I had no plans at all, bar taking Laura into work in the morning, but an early call ended up seeing me spend almost all of the day with Dave, which is a nice thing to do when we're out of work.
Lots of choices of photos, including the art gallery, the library roof, the University campus, the Victoria Building or even my pedometer showing a step count of 25,500 and counting!
What I've gone for, because I like the shapes, is a rack of hire bikes outside the students union. The fact that the rack was huge and fully populated means that the bikes are either massively popular or massively unpopular. Not sure which way to go on that yet!
Bit of an unusual allocation here on the 28 - not that there's really any N94 spares left to fill in on here, but I don't usually see a special livery bus on pink line.

Hi Fi setup - after 2 and a bit years in storage, I dragged most of my Hi Fi gear out and set it up last night. Ah, music to my ears! Audiolab 8000C preamp, 2 x Audiolab 8000M monoblocs, DPA PDM1 Series 3 DAC, cheap Pioneer DVD player acting as a CD transport and Sonus Faber Electa Amators. Speakers are bi-wired, running Audioquest Midnight 3 to the bass and DNM Reson to the tweeters.
Doing a wee bit of work on the "Ward Kimball" while waiting to load passengers. People forget that these are working steam engines and not just decorative.

"Ward Walrath Kimball (March 4, 1914 – July 8, 2002) was an Academy Award-winning animator for the Walt Disney Studios. He was one of Walt Disney's team of animators known as Disney's Nine Old Men.
While Kimball was a brilliant draftsman, he preferred to work on comical characters rather than complicated human designs. Animating came easily to him and he was constantly looking to do things differently. Because of this, Walt Disney called Ward a genius in the book The Story Of Walt Disney. While there were many talented animators at Disney, Ward's efforts stand out as especially unique.
