This huge cold lake is situated in the large crater with a diameter of 7 km of the Nemrut Dağı volcano in Eastern Turkey.
Formerly on the outer fringes of the Byzantine Empire and the kingdom of Armenia, Bitlis is the gateway to a different world. You are here coming to the edge of an unknown, a blank in most people's minds, and as you approach past the factories outlying the town and enter the steep black gorge wit its curious houses set up on the cliffsides, you have a strange sensation of entering an alien environment.
The houses have whitewash painted round their windows, contrasting sharply with the very dark chocolate-coloured stone used in all the buildings. This stone has the characteristic colour found all over the Van region. Many houses also have layers of thick wooden beams between the stonework as protective shock absorbers against earthquakes.
Bitlis is famous for its Virginia-type Tobacco and a light coloured honey with a lovely flavour. There used to be a very important trade route from Mesopatamia up through Siirt and Bitlis to Van, as the Bitlis Valley is the only approach possible to lake Van from the south and west, through a small break in the mountains that cut off this part of Turkey from the rest of the country. In the 19th century there was even a British consulate here. The population is mostly kurdish.
The türbes at the Ihlasiye Medrese in Bitlis are dimly lit by small windows in the thick walls. It takes some time to give your eyes the opportunity to get used to the dark. Inside the atmosphere is serene and I'm sure it's a perfect place for your last rest.

Descending from the rim of the volcano you have a magnificent view over Tatvan at Lake Van and the mountains in the background.
The original outlet from the basin was blocked by an ancient volcanic eruption. Although Lake Van is situated at an altitude of 1,640 m with harsh winters, it does not freeze due to its high salinity except occasionally the shallow northern section

Bitlis looks like a little shabby with its old houses, narrow streets and inadequate maintenance, but the atmosphere is great and relaxed here.

There are some very old mosques in Bitlis, sometimes difficult to find in the narrow streets in the centre.

From the main street you can only see a glimpse of the fine Serefiye mosque with türbe attached. wIthin its courtyard you get a good impression of its powerful arches and minaret, all built in perfectly masoned blocks. It was built surprisingly late, in 1528, by a local Kurdish emir.
The photo gives you a good idea of the interior, with very poor lighting conditions.

View over Tatvan, whilst the road turns higher and higher on the ridge of the Nemrut Dağı volcano. The volcano is named after King Nimrod who is said to have ruled this area in about 2100 BC.
The top of the volcano is a large caldera that hosts three crater lakes.

Leaving Bitlis and slowly leaving the Anatolian plateau, the nearly empty road meanders through an impressive landscape with high mountains with poor vegetation.
Soon we will enter the land of Mesopotamia (land between rivers), a name for the area of the Tigris–Euphrates river system, corresponding to modern-day Iraq, Kuwait, the northeastern section of Syria and to a much lesser extent southeastern Turkey and smaller parts of southwestern Iran.
We will also visit the (nearly drunken) city Hasankeyf and the hilly famous Tur Abdin region.
A fine example of the delicately flavoured Bitlis honey, presented in a shop window.

Erected in 1589 by Şerefhan V in a style that emulated that of the Selçuks with their imposing portals. The grounds contain the tombs of several 14th and 15th-century dignitaries, about whom next to nothing is known.
This medrese (seminary) is enormous and newly-restored.
On the terrain there are also several türbes of the 17th century.

Throughout the 1990s, Bitlis hunkered down in a ravine south-west of Lake Van and glowered at a world that seemed happy to dash through on the busy main road and completely ignore it. Now all that is about to change as more settled times in south-eastern Turkey are encouraging tourists to wander a little further off the well-trodden Diyarbakır-Akdamar-Van-Doğubayazıt trail, and Bitlis finally stands poised to reap the benefit of its extraordinary heritage of historic buildings.
The search for the old mosques and minarets in Bitlis will take you deep into the heart of old Bitlis where many of the enormous stone-built mansions dating back to the 19th century were once occupied by Armenians,
