Nemrut Crater Lake located on top of the extinct volcano called Mount Nemrut is within the boundaries of Tatvan district of Bitlis province. As it is believed that this wonder of nature was discovered by Alexander the Great during his military expedition to the East aimed at conquering the entire world, it is known with the name “Alexander the Great Heaven
Nemrut Crater ranking 16th among similar lakes in terms of its surface area has been visited for hundreds of years and the hot and cold water lakes found together surprises, attracts and evokes admiration of people. Besides, its rich flora including some endemic species and lots of bird species around the lakes, the ice caves, the steam chimney and the ponds especially make this place a heaven for nature lovers.
Nemrut is a dormant volcano in Eastern Turkey, close to Lake Van. The volcano is named after King Nimrod who is said to have ruled this area in about 2100 BC. The most powerful eruptions of Nemrut occurred in the Pleistocene. Many small eruptions occurred during the Holocene, the last one in 1692. The top of the volcano is a large caldera that hosts three crater lakes.

Lake Van is the largest lake in Anatolia, lies in the far east of Turkey in the provinces of Van and Bitlis. It is a saline soda lake, receiving water from numerous small streams that descend from the surrounding mountains. Lake Van is one of the world's largest endorheic lakes (having no outlet)—a volcanic eruption blocked the original outlet from the basin in prehistoric times. Although Lake Van has an altitude of 1,640 m (5,380 ft) in a region with harsh winters, its high salinity prevents most of it from freezing, and even the shallow northern section freezes only rarely.

Ahlat is a historic town and district in Turkey's Bitlis Province in Eastern Anatolia Region. The town of Ahlat is situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Van. Although history of the town dates back to 900 BC, it is famous with the cemeteries and tombstones dating to 12th - 15th centuries AD. There are at least six ancient cemeteries in Ahlat that are the reminders of a long historical past and a glorious cultural heritage. Some examples from the tombstones of these burial ground are shown in the photograph. These works are not only important sources of information on the technical and decorative repertoire of the period, but also act as historical sources for important masons and craftman, whose names appear in inscriptions there.

There are more than 8,000 gravestones dating from the 11th and 12th centuries in the 210 square-meter Seljuk Cemetery, located in the Ahlat district of the eastern province of Bitlis. These thousand-year-old gravestones are facing the threat of destruction. The stones, struggling to withstand the forces of erosion, feature Muslim versions of ancient Orhon inscriptions. The first written Turkish documents providing information on Turkish language, history, literature, art and tradition are on these gravestones.

Lake Nemrut (Turkish: Nemrut Gölü) is a freshwater crater lake in Bitlis Province, eastern Turkey. It is part of Nemrut Caldera (Turkish: Nemrut Kalderası), a volcanic caldera atop Volcano Nemrut. The caldera is a registered natural momment and the wetlandsis registered as a Ramsar site of the country.The caldera is located west of Lake Van in the Tatvan, Ahlat and Güroymak districts of Bitlis Province. It is 13 km (8.1 mi) far from Tatvan, and 25 km (16 mi) from Ahlat. With its width of nearly 10 km (6.2 mi), the crater of Nemrut Volcano is one of the largest calderas of the world. Nemrut Caldera is world's second largest one. The western half of the crater is covered by the lake. AT the summit, there are five lakes, two of them existing permanently and the others seasonal. The biggest of the lakes is Lake Nemrut in the form of crescent. It contains freshwater of colorless, odorless and drink water quality.[2]
Lake Nemrut is situated at an elevation of about 2,247 m (7,372 ft) above main sea level. It has an area of 12.36 km2 (4.77 sq mi), and its average depth is about 100 m (330 ft) with a maximum depth of 176 m (577 ft).[2]
Nemrut Caldera is on the youngest volcanic cone in Turkey, which is in a not-eroded state. This unique structural geomorphology make it a subject of scientific research.[2]
