This installment begins back, way way back, back into time. In the days we could have large gatherings, touch our faces, eat inside restaurants, and lived perilously close to the edge of running out of toilet paper. Picture it, Thanksgiving weekend, 2019…Oh wait, back a bit further…August, 1983.
Some dunderhead salesman in southern California takes an order from a buyer with great taste, a beautifully optioned 1984 Eldorado Biarritz in the ultimate color combination of Black/Black/Red. Said dunderhead gets everything right on the order-except for one tiny detail. The desire for a CF5 Astroroof is lost in translation from the prospective buyer and never makes it into the POS.
Car arrives in September. No sunroof. What gives? Our apologies sir, we’ll get that taken care of right away. Car is driven to an ASC installer. Another dunderhead gets out a jigsaw and cuts a hole thru the roof. A 38” (the biggest you can fit in an Eldorado with roof-mounted seatbelts) ASC sunroof is installed. Car is returned to dealership, buyer eagerly accepts delivery, none the wiser about factory vs aftermarket sunroofs.
For those who don’t know, when you order a car with a sunroof, the car is born with a hole in the roof. Mounts are cast into the roof panel, and the sunroof assembly seats in them and the glass panel has a channel for a nice rubber gasket that seals everything up nice. Then a vacuum formed headliner backing board is cast to perfectly hide everything. When you get an aftermarket sunroof, someone gets a stencil and a jigsaw, and cuts your roof panel and headliner open, pops a trim ring in the hole, and hangs a sunroof pan on the trim ring. If you’re lucky they will drill additional reinforcements to marry the pan to the roof structure. Then they get a bunch of headliner material, pull it taught from the corners of the car to the opening in the roof, and send you on down the road.
Anyway, back to Thanksgiving 2019, and the jigsaw dunderhead’s work starts to come undone.
When I had purchased this car, it needed headliner help. The material was loose, but not sagging appreciably. Additionally, someone had tried to superglue the material all around the perimeter. The material was kind of floating in place, which I thought was weird. I ended up getting some super strong neodymium magnets to hold it taught-which worked ok until it was humid out, or driving on the highway with the windows down as the liner would look something like a sailboat in the wind.
My fix was simple-find a factory sunroof equipped car and get the headliner board out of it and pop it into my car. Found out that that was easier said than done, and after a lot of junkyard expedition, kept coming up empty handed. Finally after years, I came into someone parting a factory sunroof Eldo on ebay and after a lot of trouble was able to get it shipped to me
The board needed some help, and after getting all the old foam off of it and some repairs made to restore the structure (the sunroof headliner board is really thin and flimsy, even compared to the stock non-sunroof board) I tore the interior apart to facilitate getting it in and out as I knew I would have to make “some” tweaks to reconcile the aftermarket hole location to the factory one. The sunroof assembly would also need to come out to recover the sunshade; as well as reseal the panel.
We can see here how the trim ring supports the pan assembly from the center. I have to say though, this was about as clean an install as an aftermarket sunroof can come with lots of extra bracing and no factory roof reinforcements cut. We can also see a very chintzy felt seal stuck to the trim ring
Got the sunshade recovered quickly. I later removed the black plastic covered jute that was glued to the pan-factory did not have this and it would have made the board sit too low when installed in the car. The gray rubbery stuff at the front of the pan was also stripped off for the same reason. I also swapped to the factory grab handle that was included with the board.
Also recovered the sail panels. I chose to leave the foam backing on these as it is not the usual headliner stuff that turns to jelly, its more like a sponge material and seemed to be holding up just fine.
I also added PED connectors to the sail panel interior lights that the factory curiously left out. Not sure how they installed these as the harness is one giant piece, but it means that you can’t take the sail panels out without having the lights dangling in the back. This will become important later.
I then devised a new seal. I threw away all the felt and used some 3M Adhesive remover to get rid of the stuff they had glued it with. Nasty stuff but did a good job. The new seal was the first part of this that took a LONG time. Aftermarket roofs from this time use some kind of felt tape to cut down on wind noise and slow water ingress into the pan, and while still available, there is way better out there today. (In spite of how it looked on my car though, it never leaked?!?! Wind noise was an issue with the shade open though) I decided on a rubber seal, and after getting a whole bunch of samples, the stuff I had initially ended up trying was pretty thin, but rigid strip of rubber. After gluing it on with 3M yellow weatherstrip adhesive (which does NOT work as good as the adhesive remover), I put the pan back in the car to see how it would work.
No photos of the failure here, but no good. The material was too rigid and too grippy, and would cause the roof to bind midway thru its travel. Then it tore off in the corners. Ugh! Pan back out, strip off the remaining seal and glue and go back to the drawing board. I ended up buying this
www.austinhardware.com/rubber-seal-single-500-rolls.htm
Which is a hollow piece of rubber that lets the panel travel without binding, and still squishes into a really tight seal. Looks like its out of stock now, but something with close to those measurements in a D-shape is a possibility for someone looking to reseal their ASC aftermarket sunroof. It was another 3M product, that was just a peel and stick affair-way easier than the yellow goopy adhesive route. Seems like a really strong bond, and seals fantastically against wind and water. 0 wind noise now, and no leaks in a downpour when parked, or cruising at highway speeds. Roof moves without binding now
I also decided to put the new seal onto the glass panel itself as it seems like that’s the easier life for it-if I put it around the opening, the pop rivets from the panel would abrade it. Super happy with this.
Next task was of course the headliner. With the pan now back in the car, I could take measurements and properly scribe/cut/fill the board as needed. Again, easier said than done. This was a weeks long ordeal between cutting the board, fiberglassing new material in, more cutting, more filling, coronavirus insanity, etc. Long story short, my roof was installed a few inches more aft than a factory roof would have been, which meant a lot of tweaking to get the kick-up over the rear passengers head in the right spot. Additionally, I needed to build out the map light drop down to accommodate the motor.
Here is the mess I ended up with
I also affixed strips of 3M dual-lock (it is like a heavy duty version of the stuff that holds in an Ezpass) to the back of the board and the pan to hold it tightly-the factory had attempted this with a similar product in the non-sunroof car headliner board. I was super skeptical that my fudgery would cover well at all, but I have to say that foam backed headliner material must be some of the most forgiving stuff around. This took me months to complete, working off and on from November thru April. Ultimately though, I’m happy with it.
While the interior was out, there was another thing I wanted to do. About a year ago, I was following a buddy as he took his Eldorado to drop off at a shop-couldn’t help but notice how small the brake lights (and the rest of the car) seemed compared to all the bulbous modern cars surrounding it. Then I had a couple of SUV’s roll up way too close for comfort on the back of the car-one was close enough that I launched the Eldorado up and to the side to avoid getting hit. Knowing that getting rear ended by a careless driver would probably result in my untimely incarceration, I set out to do something about rear visibility.
The federal government mandated 3rd brake lights for passenger cars for model year 1986. Cadillac was slightly ahead of the curve with this with the 1985 Deville/Fleetwoods which got these in the fall of ’84. Apparently the science is behind them and they do result in fewer rear end collisions. So I decided to add one of them to the Eldo.
There were a few different versions of these things made, with short, medium and long necks to mate with the rear window-one for a Fleetwood Brougham has the tall one, and one for an 80s Buick Riviera like the one seen above is short. The short one is the best size for the Eldo, any taller and it would look pretty bad. Then the gasket that seals it to the window is different for each different model. Fortunately a potato peeler does a great job of cutting things down to size to match the Eldos vertical rear window, and the material can be easily sanded to get out any little imperfections to make it seal nicely and not leak light. An ideal donor for one would be one an 86-91 Eldo or Seville without a factory vinyl or carriage roof.
A quick mockup
All of these lights mount the same way, with this little bracket cutting into the package shelf and screwing in to the metal underneath. This is not possible on the Eldo as the package shelf reinforcement under the center won’t let this happen. So I had to modify the bracket to sit flush on the package shelf, and add two holes to the shelf to get the screws through. They screw right into the package shelf reinforcement.
The next step was wiring. It is not as simple as tapping a brake light wire and running across the package shelf to the light. Since the Eldos tail lights do everything- brake, signal and hazard, just tapping a wire would cause the center light to flash with the signals or hazard. GM rectified this by using a different brake switch to prevent backfeeding. See the original gray switch, with an in and out, and the new beige one, with a supply, and two isolated outputs. This puts the 3rd brake light (acronym: CHMSL “Center High Mount Stoplight) on its own branch-but also means that you have to home run a wire all the way to it. The wire chase made quick work of this however. I had a pretty long link of 3rd brake light harness, but not quite enough to make it to the front of the car. I put another PED connector of the same kind that I used on the sail panels to join this blue wire I ran from the switch underneath the drivers side rear seat arm rest, which is accessible by removing the ash tray if need be. The stock package shelf reinforcement actually ended up being drilled for the wiring, so I’m not sure if this was something that was in the works for the Eldo.
The version of the brake switch I used allowed me to keep the cruise control connector, and only change the brake light connector itself (part 12117354). I wanted to keep this as non-invasive as possible as I hate being upside down under the dash (though I see to find myself in that position a lot…) I will search around for the part number for the brake light switch itself.
The last trick I wanted to pull before I put the interior back together was to replace the horrible rearview mirror. I forgot how bad these things were (or more like, no one ever noticed before there were LED headlights on other people’s cars that are tall enough to be flush with your back window) but it seems like the mirror was good for one thing; blindness. They have two settings-blindingly bright where others headlights fry your retinas at night, or completely blind, where you can’t see a thing behind you.
My daily driver has a great auto dimming mirror that still lets you see everything without blinding you, made by Gentex. About the same size as the Eldo rearview. I was casually browsing their offerings to see what kind of money we were talking, when I noticed they offered an upgraded unit as compared to the one installed on my car-one with an LED compass feature that was *drumroll* amber colored! Just like the center stack on the Eldorado! So needless to say, the project was underway quickly.
Wired it in cleanly to an existing ignition power on the fuse box
I had to buy a new button to mount it, stock Eldo one was too small to hold it. Check out the dashboard illustration on the glue I bought to stick it on with!
And here it is mounted up!
I am super happy with the mirror. It works great and is a really close match to the amber on the center stack. They even have the same segment check timing when you turn the ignition on Unfortunately it does not dim with the rest of the dash panel, so that’s a letdown, but if desired you can turn the compass off if you wanted to dim everything all the way as I like to do when I’m out of the city on a dark road.
Now, you may notice that the visors are all kinds of messed up. Progress has a price I guess. My long-fought for 1988 Deville visors are NG with the new headliner board-they’re just too big and interfere with the bump out for the map light. I wish I would have known as I could have easily shrunk this bump out when I was doing surgery on the board but its too late now. I’m at a crossroads of reinstalling my old red Eldo visors with known good arms swapped into them (which are probably super faded next to the new material but are impossible to reupholster right) or finding another late 80s more robust GM visor and reupholstering/swapping them in.
I still have more stuff to add to this which may come tomorrow as my fingers are about to fall off!
Bits and bobs
Pictures taken during exercising my hobby (electronics) and building/disassembling amplifiers and/or upgrading a record player tonearm and pre-amplifier. Anyway, a text was needed, to describe this lot, and here it is (the text and the lot, enjoy the pictures :)).
A warm and sunny Sunday, so we went to Richmond Beach Park and happened to find a particularly high high tide. The waves were washing various bits of driftwood and flotsam around. The beach (more rocky than sandy) is littered with driftwood, but the waves usually don't come high enough to start moving them around much. Even this high tide was only doing a bit of flotsam arranging. Puget Sound was pretty calm and the waves small, and the really big driftwood logs on the upper beach would take a major storm to move around. Still it was cool to see this high tide -- an interesting contrast with the low low tides I've happened upon recently. I ought to look up and print out tide information so I know when the more extreme tides will be happening.
I just checked the tide info online and it looks like we were at the beach at the peak of the high tide, which was +11 feet. I'm not exactly sure what the average high tide is around here, but I think it is quite a bit less than that. (later note: I tried to find out if this was an unusually high tide or not, but got lost in tidal terminology and differing datums -- mean high water MHW, mean high high water MHHW, mean low water MLW, mean low low water MLLW, mean this, mean that. It appears, I think, that this high tide was not unusually high for a "high high tide" (which occur about once a day when the moon is right). Also, I thought +11 feet seemed like a lot, but I assumed it meant +11 from "sea level", but apparently they measure from "mean low low water", which explains why the tide tables almost always give positive values for both high and low tide.)
Being a nice weekend afternoon, there were lots of people at the beach here. I watched a group of three young teen kids dare each other to go into the water. Two of them did wade in and do quick dives underwater before running out and shrieking about how cold it was as if they were in great pain. Then they would dare each other again and do back in for another reluctant-but-playful soaking and another shrieking run back to towels and a little fire they had going. The temperature of Puget Sound's coastal water is currently about 47 F (8 C).
SMART Train, 31 August 2017
SMART, the Sonoma Marin Rail Transit system, began service on 25 August. I was busy with work that day, but 31 August was a bit quieter, so I took a train ride, working from train for part of the time.
SMART operates on the Northwestern Pacific between San Rafael and the Sonoma County Airport, just north of Santa Rosa. It parallels US 101. The line had been freight only since 1958, when NWP's Redwood was cut back to Willits-Eureka operation, connecting with buses for the Willits-San Francisco part of the trip.
Before the Golden Gate Bridge was built, NWP ran electrified commuter train in the southern part of Marin County, connecting with ferries to San Francisco at Sausalito. The bridge quickly drained the commuter traffic to SF and the electrics finished before WW2. North of San Rafael, the passenger service was never as heavy, although the NWP used to carry a lot of lumber.
As logging on the north coast declined, the NWP's traffic did as well and eventually, the entire NWP was out of service for several years. It is still out of service north of Windsor and whether it will be restored north of there is anyone's guess. The line in Eel River Canyon is washed out in places and the Ft Bragg lumber mill, which provided traffic to the NWP via the California Western at Willits is gone. The new NWP runs freight between Lombard and Windsor, and now it shares the track with passenger service between Novato and the airport.
My trip was via Capitol Corridor train 527 from Sacramento to Richmond. This 0700 departure is the train I took last year when I had a job in Berkeley for a month. We were delayed shortly after leaving Sacramento because UP had let the ZOAG2 run ahead of Capitol train 520 and we wound up waiting for 520 to crossover at West Causeway betwen Davis and Sacramento. 520 had the Amtrak California P32s, 2051 and 2052, leading. They were going to the Siemens plant in Sacramento to fetch a Charger locomotive.
As I've done on other Capitol runs, I took some photos of ships at Benicia. Martinez and farther on along the bay.
As we were late getting into Richmond, there was no way I was going to make a tight connection on a bus to San Rafael, so I hung out at Richmond station long enough to record the arrival of Capitol 529, which had a cabbage car (ex-F40) instead of its usual cab car. I considered sticking around in Richmond to see the eastbound Zephyr, but that might have risked the bus connection, so I took BART to El Cerrito del Norte, where the Golden Gate Transit 40 route took me to San Rafael.
San Rafael depot has changed since I last was there. SMART uses high level platforms and has rebuilt what was some pretty dilapidated track from the NWP days. There are plans to extend SMART south from San Rafael to the ferry terminal at Larkspur, near the trestle where Dirty Harry jumps off the NWP onto the school bus in the first Dirty Harry movie, but for now, people wanting to connect to SF can catch a GGT bus to SF or to Larkspur and the ferry from there.
I was heading the other way, and after buying a Clipper card, got set up to record the arrival of the next train into San Rafael. The train appeared to be full from the crowd getting off and our northbound train also had a lot of people board. Right on time at 1129, our train departed and rolled north parallel to 101. SMART moves right along and in places where we could see the highway, we were passing some cars on it, even in the middle of the day. On the way back, the northbound lanes were stop and go as we zipped by.
Not all of the NWP is in sight of 101 and in some places we passed through cow pastures and wetlands with hundreds of gulls, egrets, geese, ducks and other birds.
We arrived on time at the Somoma County Airport station at 1236. Many people got off at Santa Rosa, the last station that had much around it, with those of us staying on to the airport mostly being folks just out for the ride. SMART's maintenance yard is at the airport. There are plans to extend SMART north to Cloverdale.
The train soon returned south and I rode it to Santa Rosa downtown, which has a nice old NWP station and some restaurants. Lunch was in the plans for Santa Rosa, then afterward, I looked it at the visitor center in the station before boarding the next train heading south, which I rode to Petaluma.
Another southbound train would be along in a half hour at Petaluma and a northbound came through shortly after my train departed. Between trains, I photographed the station, and checked out the visitor center in the Petaluma depot.
I wanted to get home at a reasonable hour, so I took the next train south. As we passed Novato junction, an NWP train was stopped and I barely got a grab shot with the camera. When we arrived in San Rafael, the nest northbound train was ready to depart and I photographed it leaving before getting on the 40 bus to El Cerrito, where a BART train was arriving as I stepped onto the platform. BART took me back to Richmond, where train 543 was heading west as I got onto the Amtrak plaform.
540 was due in a few minutes, and it pulled in on time at 1712. The BART train I had ridden was still in the BART platform and another BART train was creeping up on the block as Amtrak arrived. I can only imagine the frustration of people on that BART train who might have been try to connect to Amtrak to see their Amtrak train arrive as they waited.
540 was on time the whole way, and early into Sacramento. I took a few photos at the station, then was asked by the family to stop by the store on the way home.
It was a great day out.
They've all been a bit feral today with unbrushed hair, runny noses, lots of play fighting, sulking, noise and tears....maybe it's the wind.

geckogrl2002: End of the first week of the hols
Bloomin'eck... A bit of a surprise during July has been air conditioned Volvo B7RLE Wright Eclipse Urban YK08 XYF from the P&R fleet being given additional vinyls to promote the 'Bloom Festival' which was taking place at the start of the month from July 5th to 8th. There were a couple of problems with this bus however - one being that the vinyls were placed over top of the P&R arrow roundels on the windows, which even the management admitted looked cluttered and messy, and also this bus didn't come out into traffic with the promotional vinyls in place until July 13th which is about a week later than it was supposed to be out!
Anyway, here it is on the Green Line 2 to Rawcliffe Bar seen at Exhibition Square

First bloom this season, just a bit early but on schedule.
Beat my Thanksgiving cactus this year that didn't begin to bloom until the very end of December, early January 2025.

An bit of an oddball…..
When Volvo decided to replace its hugely successful B9TL with its B5TL, Wrightbus took the opportunity to refresh its Gemini 2 body at the same time. As a key customer, Lothian’s first such B5TLs received the revised body style, imaginatively called the Gemini 3.
The main difference between the two was the addition of daytime LED running lights, increasingly appearing on other vehicles and this led to a slightly different front lower dash although the styling at the front was more evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
The sides and rear had more effort put into them. Wrightbus had a reputation for design flare but it always seemed to struggle with the rear of buses, particularly the Gemini. The original Gemini was nothing fancy at the rear, particularly with its registration plate offset on the upper deck and indeed it could be argued that the Alexander ALX400 was more interesting aesthetically at the rear. The Gemini 2 rectified a number of these design flaws at the rear. The Gemini 3 introduced a more rounded, stylish design at the rear and kept it the design at the top. Also introduced was a glass windowed staircase, a feature Wrightbus borrowed from its New Routemaster design.
However Lothian only received one batch of these buses to this design. Shortly after this, Wrightbus launched irs ‘stealth’ design language - which seemed a bit of an acquired taste after the universally praised Gemini 2, and certainly wasn’t to everyone’s taste. It used this stealth front to launch its integral Streetdeck design. It also grafted this onto its Gemini 3 design, although Dublin Bus obviously was not that impressed with it as it continued to order the original front end.
Therefore Lothian’s original Gemini 3s to the original design are an interesting one-off batch. This is 415 (BN64CRU). Also of note is that this bus was registered by Volvo at Warwick rather that Wrightbus, hence the BN registration.

A little bit of historic Calgary I acquired on the weekend... the postcard is dated 1913 and shows the view of the Sunnyside community from Crescent Hill, yes... Sunnyside is those few scattered homes on the north bank of the Bow River. For those non-Calgarians who may not know... Calgary is a young city and that area of scattered homes is very inner city now, but back in 1913 (not even 100 years ago) it was just simply a new suburb across the Bow River.
As far as I can tell, this picture was originally taken from just east of where Crescent Road and 1st Street NW intersect (the row of homes facing the hill), of course taken facing west.
And this is what the back of the postcard says, an interesting read
Bit of noise with this one - not sure why but will learn from mistakes - could be alcohol induced. Just back from a two week holiday in Riviera Maya (Azul Sensatori) - took over 600 shots and loved every second. The sunrises and sunsets were to die for :-)
bit of cross processing and some vignette and a swizzle of the contrast knob here. was at the columbia road flower market at the top of brick lane in east london and these city ladies looked good letting their hair down for a hangover large mocha to discuss the tribulations of last nights gentlemen.

Need for Speed: Underground
تم نقل اللعبة إلى PlayStation Portable ، تحت عنوان Need for Speed: Underground Rivals .
The Underground Racing League (URL)

marvel comics: wolverine
yes....he will join the army of final fantasy and battle the monsters that lie ahead
Photos from the EOS M this time.
Our late winter break in Tenerife was a bit different this year. The weather was forecast to break the day we arrived – and it did! Rain wasn’t the problem it was gale force winds – the same winds that caused the dust storms in Africa that caused the pollution and sand in the UK. We have witnessed gales in Tenerife before but this was worse than we’d seen it in the past . The palm trees were bending, the sand drifting like snow and the sea was raging. We usually walk around 150 miles on a ten day break but for five days we just walked with a brief spell on the beach, then the gales came back. We covered 22 miles some days and totalled 192 miles, not bad for a beach holiday. In some of the photos it looks stunning but look at the tops of the palm trees, like inside out umbrellas, the beach beds are empty and the waves were up to ten feet high and smashing thirty feet in the air. For five days everyone stood taking photos of the sea. For two days all boats stayed in harbour, only the big ferries sailed, there wasn’t a thing at sea, not even the surfers, we’ve never known that happen before. To add to this jellyfish in their hundred were washing up on shore and there was a severe risk of a burn from them. Even when red flags were flying and flags warning about the jellyfish were up the occasional nutter would go in the water and some people took staggering risks with their children including one couple with a baby, dangling it over the waves, just to get a photo, playing chicken as monster waves crashed in.
One day I had to catch my club sandwich as it went flying from my plate in the wind, empty glasses slid off the table and seat cushions went cartwheeling down the pavement. A couple of days were dull and cool but the menacing clouds made impressive photos, the sea was like a boiling cauldron. We did have days of beautiful weather as well, the second half of the holiday was normal sunny Tenerife. I haven’t hired a car for ages on Tenerife, it adds a degree of hassle to – what is supposed to be – a sun and relax holiday so again we didn’t go up El Teide. Next time perhaps. I took my racing bike once just to cycle from sea level to 8000 feet nonstop – twice! it’s a seventy mile round trip and a long drag to the top. On the way home we had to make an emergency landing in Dublin, fire tenders with foam jets pointing at us, unfortunately I was facing the setting sun and couldn’t take photos as the sun was shining straight through the window. Seven and a half hours on the plane, not much fun.

Okay, here's the legs, all laid out so I know what's what, with his right leg parts on the right, and his left leg parts on the left. I put the leg elastic to the left of the set-up, because Leg and Left begin with the same letter - It works for me.
Bit miffed by the focus (or lack of!) top left, but hey - it's a work day and I haven't got time to retake. Like the light though - I tend to avoid playing with light as am a bit crap at it!
Need a bit of input on this one... not my usual style but feel the need to branch out and do other stuff to learn more. (I get bored quite easily and need to challenge myself often - so this is a self assignment - remember, I do this for fun and not for a living)
I have always admired other photographers (much like other starting photographers do). Helmut Newton always gave me inspiration on subjects. He often draws themes from strong, sensual women in unique often dreamed situations (unless you lived his life in Monaco) while keeping the subject challenging and strong. His image style was not unique, but his execution and content was, and we all know it had a bit of controversy based on the period he was producing his early work.
I could not be farther from Mr. Newton's real, so I thought it was the best example to learn from.
Came up with the concept of 4 frames (the other ones are coming soon), found the "perfect model" who came from Ottawa to do this (it could had been a friend, but this girl was perfect in my books), took a Saturday to scout barber shops, pitched the idea to the owner (thank you Mr Vitto) researched the lighting and out we went. So it took a few days, a bunch of calls and a borrowed lens.

Unimportant guy who clicks the button: me... (I got to start giving me credit now)
Strobits: Closed the windows as I needed to control the light (and stop on-lookers). Beauty dish (yes, I know, I can't live without it - but that is how I pre-visualized the image), AB pointing towards the celling behind the camera - SB800 pointing towards celling to complete ambient light behind the barber's chair to add a bit more separation. metered the ambience I created and shot at a stop under exposed while adjusting main dish's light to my target.
