Sept. Bonus Challenge - Birds - at Compositionally Challenged
After eating his fill of chicken scratch, this Steller's Jay had a good look at me looking at him.
This summer we spied, for the first time, an egret at our lake north of Ottawa-Gatineau. It was surprising to see this large ghostly bird on the shoreline of the lake and in flight over the water. In shape, it resembled the great blue herons that regularly nest here but its bright white colour certainly makes it stand out.
Although this image may look like an oil painting, I actually made it one evening on my iPad Pro using Procreate. Back in the summer, I'd been thinking of creating a watercolour painting of this scene but didn't get around to it. Picking up my tablet at the end of the day, I began to rough out the scene and before you knew it, it was finished! This is one of the things that I like about digital painting - you can accomplish something worthwhile in little time without having to spend a lot of time setting up and cleaning up afterwards. On the other hand, you can also spend dozens of hours slowly working out the small details of an image but in small chunks of time that become available while waiting in the dentist's office or at the garage, for instance. Anyway, its great fun to have another tool to create some art.
Cet été, nous avons aperçu pour la première fois une aigrette au bord de notre lac, au nord d’Ottawa-Gatineau. C'était surprenant de voir ce grand oiseau fantomatique sur le rivage du lac et en vol au-dessus de l'eau. Sa forme ressemblait aux grands hérons bleus qui y nichent régulièrement, mais sa couleur blanche brillante le distingue certainement des autres.
Bien que cette image ressemble à une peinture à l'huile, je l'ai réalisée un soir sur mon iPad Pro avec Procreate. En été, je pensais créer une aquarelle de cette scène, mais je n'y suis pas parvenu. En reprenant ma tablette à la fin d'une journée, j'ai commencé à dessiner la scène et dans peu de temps, c'était fini! C’est l’une des choses que j’aime dans la peinture numérique: vous pouvez réaliser quelque chose de valable en peu de temps sans avoir à passer beaucoup de temps de s'installer et à nettoyer par la suite. D'autre part, vous pouvez également passer des dizaines d'heures à régler lentement les petits détails d'une image, mais par petits morceaux de temps qui deviennent disponibles en attendant par exemple chez le dentiste ou le garage. Quoi qu'il en soit, c'est très amusant d'avoir un autre outil pour créer de l'art.
I give you Bird! A little confession, I like taking shots of Birds, I don't post many of them, and I am not sure why. I consider birds to be a bit of a challenge because when they move it is hard to get them in focus and because the colors are usually so varied, and it is hard to treat them and keep them looking as colorful as they should be but natural (although clearly not what I was trying to do with my post crows), if you know what I mean. Anyway, using this bird to help color calibrate my monitor (along with other images), and I kept looking at this little guy and thinking "oh just go ahead and post him." So here you go!! :-)))
Hope everyone is well. Close to being completely back in the swing of things, although I still have a huge amount of data, mostly images, to get from my old computer onto my new computer.
Oh and amazingly enough, my ipad died yesterday!! I can't make it go back on no matter what I do, which is a big, big bummer!!!! I am beginning to suspect that I have the same effect on computers that I seem to have on explore, which is that I don't have much luck with either! :-)))
Two of my favourite birds a robin and a peacock in one photo together! The little robin was flying all over the place so was hard to get them in the same photo but managed this one.
Ramses has spotted a pigeon at the birdfeeder in my garden. So far he hasn't caught any birds yet, because usually he acts so clumsily that all the birds in the area know that he is there, unless they are deaf and blind. :)

Betty Bird (1901-1998) was a beautiful Austrian actress who appeared in several German films between 1927 and 1935.
Betty Bird was born in 1901 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria) as Hilde Elisabeth Ptack. She was the daughter of Ludwig Ptack, the private secretary of Count Alexander Kolowrat-Krakowsky, the owner of the Sascha Film Factory. Thus Betty came into contact with film people at an early age. In 1923, she married the cameraman and later film director Gustav Ucicky. In 1927 she became the ‘Viennese Film Beauty Queen’ and received a first film offer and debuted in Madame wagt einen Seitensprung/Madame makes an infidelity (Hans Otto, 1927), starring Xenia Desni. She now called herself Betty Bird. With her husband she moved to Munich and later to Berlin. She made Der Ladenprinz/The Shop Prince (Erich Schönfelder, 1928), in which she played the cousin of Harry Halm. Then followed a leading role in the German-Spanish silent film Herzen ohne Ziel/Corazones sin rumbo/Restless Hearts (Benito Perojo, Gustav Ucicky, 1928) in which she starred with Betty Bird, Hanna Ralph and Livio Pavanelli. The film was a co-production between the Spanish company Julio César and the German studio Bavaria Film. The Argentine actress Imperio Argentina was cast after winning a competition staged by the film's producers. On its release the film was attacked by Spanish critics who felt that the Spanish actors had been relegated to lesser roles. She then appeared in the German production Der Herzensphotograph/The Heart Photographer (Max Reichmann, 1928) co-starring with Harry Liedtke, Robert Garrison and La Jana. In the silent crime film Das grüne Monokel/The Green Monocle (Rudolf Meinert , 1929), she starred with Ralph Clancy and Suzy Vernon. It features Stuart Webbs, one of several German fictional detectives inspired by Sherlock Holmes, who had appeared in a series of silent German films during the 1910s and 1920s. Die Mitternachtstaxe/Taxi at Midnight (Harry Piel, 1929:) is another German silent thriller in which she appeared opposite Harry Piel. In Austria she appeared in the silent comedy Madame im Strandbad/Lady in the Spa (Edmund Hahn, 1929) about small spa town, which tries to give the impression that it is actually a much more important place than it really is. Back in Germany she starred in the comedy Die vierte von rechts/The Fourth from the Right (Conrad Wiene, 1929) with Ossi Oswalda, and Adolphe Engers.
Betty Bird’s smoothly moved into the sound era. She had a supporting part in the musical drama Liebling der Götter/Darling of the Gods (Hanns Schwarz, 1930) starring Emil Jannings, Renate Müller and Olga Tschechowa. Then followed a female lead opposite Hans Brausewetter and Willi Forst in the musical Ein Burschenlied aus Heidelberg/A Student's Song of Heidelberg (Karl Hartl, 1930) in the tradition of the nostalgic Old Heidelberg. In the German drama Grock (Carl Boese, 1931) she co-starred with the famous Swiss circus clown Grock (as himself) and Liane Haid. She then starred in the farce Die spanische Fliege/The Spanish Fly (Georg Jacoby, 1931) with Lizzi Waldmüller and Fritz Schulz. She had a supporting role in Opernredoute/The Opera Ball (Max Neufeld, 1931) starring Iván Petrovich, Liane Haid and Georg Alexander It is an adaptation of the operetta Der Opernball and part of thr many operetta films made during the decade. In the following years she mainly played supporting parts, such as in the operetta Kaiserwalzer/The Emperor's Waltz (Friedrich Zelnik (Frederic Zelnik), 1933) starring Mártha Eggerth, Paul Hörbiger and Willy Eichberger (Carl Esmond.) Her final film was the Czech-German comedy Held einer Nacht/Hero of one Night (Martin Frič, 1935) with Vlasta Burian and Theo Lingen. In 1936, her marriage with Gustav Ucicky ended in a divorce. In 1937, she married the Czech dentist Hruska in Rome. She retired from the film industry and lived in Italy till her death. Betty Bird passed away in Rome in 1998. She was 96.

This bird flew in through the window at high speed and did not notice that the next window is close. His head smashed on the window glass and he fell on the ground inside the restaurant. Disoriented for over half an hour.

I like brid of paradise very very much, however, there are too few people taking photos of these birds. I have googled and flickred and collected some and upload here :D
He catches birds by placing bamboo poles (one of which he is currently holding) on top of trees. The pole's other top half is removed and juice from jack fruit (tagok sa nangka) is smeared on the surface of the insides of the pole. Rice or corn is then placed on top of wet surface. The jack fruit extract is very sticky that it traps the birds once they set their feet inside the pole.

"Rustic Flock"
Jill and Nathan depict attributes of the six birds from "I Am the Bird". Jillian is a Recreation student at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Nathan is an Applied Math student and Simon Fraser University. Both currently live in Burnaby, located in the Greater Vancouver area of Canada.
Found this old embroidery pattern at an estate sale, along with this green vintage hanky with the crocheted edging. I used a white floss to embroider the bird on a branch to the hanky and then carefully handstitched the hanky to a lovely brown striped fabric. I added a row of cotton moss fringe all around the edge. There is a button closure on the back so you can hand wash the pillow cover.

This bird kept posing for me for a good 10 minutes. I crept ever closer, pushing my luck, a few shots with each step as the bird turned, spread its wings, looked at me etc. A very cooperative model.

Another beautiful and very graceful bird and again IMHO, that goes through a change. This bird is born all brown and morph's into an all white after his juvy stage. I will be posting a preening process of an adult of this species, hope you all like it and thank you for the visist.
