As I sat in my garden enjoying a nice cup of tea I liked how the late afternoon light was illuminating the grass.

El estornino común o estornino europeo (Sturnus vulgaris), también conocido simplemente como estornino en Gran Bretaña e Irlanda, es un ave paseriforme de tamaño mediano de la familia de los estorninos Sturnidae. Mide unos 20 cm de largo y tiene un plumaje negro brillante con un brillo metálico, moteado de blanco en algunas épocas del año. Las patas son rosadas y el pico es negro en invierno y amarillo en verano; Los juveniles tienen un plumaje más marrón que los adultos. Listening to Carole King today… another old Rocker that’s made beautiful music for a number of years.
Carole King is an American singer, songwriter, and musician who has been active since 1958. King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years.
Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter.

The Hooded Merganser:
Spotted this Female Hooded Merganser Strutting Her Stuff after finishing a breakfast of Frog Legs alfresco. The legs were still attached to the frog, so it took her awhile to dine, but she seems to have had a Happy Ending : )
Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They find their prey underwater by sight. They can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane,” which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.
Hooded Merganser ducklings leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching. First, their mother checks the area around the nest and calls to the nestlings from ground level. From inside the nest, the little fluffballs scramble up to the entrance hole and then flutter to the ground, which may be 50 feet or more below them. In some cases, they have to walk half a mile or more with their mother to the nearest body of water.
The oldest recorded Hooded Merganser was a male and at least 14 years, 6 months old when he was shot in Mississippi in 2009. He had been banded in Minnesota in 1995.

Northern Red-billed Hornbill (Tockus erythrorhynchus). Hornbills are noisy, conspicuous birds easily distinguished by their bold black and white feather patterns, accented by long, colorful bills and patches of bare skin around the eyes or throat. Their first two neck vertebrae are fused to support their large bill. Samburu National Reserve, Kenya.
Conservation status: Least Concern

There is something about birds singing on barbed wire that always appeals to me, especially now.
I almost only see these colorful birds in winter. Then there are several couples who visit the bird tray every day and eat lots of sunflower seeds!

The Chaxa Lagoon is an extraordinary natural basin in the middle of the desert. Early in the morning, the reflection of the dawn light colors the salt water with a pink hue. The basin, home to countless wild flamingos, marks the entrance to the Los Flamencos National Reserve.
A stern looking Javan myna is protecting a feather it found. In Fort Canning, Singapore. It got too hot for sightseeing. So I stopped to look for birds in the shade.

The Great Egret was chosen as the mascot for the Audubon Society because back in the 1800s this elegant bird was hunted to near extinction so the egrets feathers could be worn in ladies hats. It is a reminder that our beautiful birds need to be protected and preserved. And seriously don't their feathers look so much better on them.
