Dave Douches, professor of crop and soil sciences, and C. Robin Buell, associate professor in plant biology, look over genetic databases that will be used in combination with traditional breeding techniques to accelerate the development of new potato varieties.
As the only full-time MSU faculty member focused on potato research, Douches spearheads the development of varieties that position potato farmers to grow the best potatoes for their markets. Douches is also the head of the MSU potato breeding and genetics program.
Given the significance of the potato, research on the genetic improvement of this crop is critical. C. Robin Buell is a vital partner in Douches' research. Buell has expertise in genomics, bioinformatics, and sequencing.

One of the best parts of the BioArtography program, Santiago Schnell believes, is its ability to engage the public. "It's something quite unique," he says with a smile. Schnell, D.Phil., is interim chair of the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology, the John A. Jacquez Collegiate Professor of Physiology, and professor of computational medicine and bioinformatics.
