The Northwest Association for Biomedical Research was excited to share with teachers our bioinformatics program, New Frontiers in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology funded by the National Science Foundation. The two-day workshop began in the Seattle research center of Novo Nordisk A/S and ended at Shoreline Community College, which features a Biotechnology Lab Specialist Program.

The Genome Scroller is a large‑scale, dynamic, visualisation of the information surrounding the Human Genome. Its aim is to convey the huge scale of the genome itself, the rarity of the information rich regions, but the richness of the information that we know within those regions. We hope that it inspires in people a sense of curiosity about bioinformatics and biology as a whole, and amazement at the wonder that is the Human Genome.

Genome Scroller is collaboration between The Data Analysis Group, College of Life Sciences ( The Barton Lab, University of Dundee ) and The Visual Effects Research Lab., College of Arts & Media, Duncan of Jordanstone.

I am leaving today to teach a 3 day bioinformatics workshop in Puerto Iguazu, Argentina, as part of an ornithology conference there. I have a morning to bird after the workshop, so I'll return to posting neotropical birds shortly.

In the mean time, here is one more picture from my last work trip, to Sweden at the end of May. Watching this common moorhen run across the lily pads trying to achieve liftoff was pretty cool.
