Bioinformatics is used to study the mitrochondrial DNA of extinct species. Bioinformatics is the use of computer science, mathematics, and information theory to model and analyze biological systems. Scientists are now able to extract and study the DNA from extinct species.
There are now DNA databases available for the following extinct species: Neanderthals, woolly mammoths, dodos, marsupial wolves, Irish elk, cave bears, quaggas, and saber toothed cats.
This information can help to answer the question of "Who are your closest living relatives?"
